Ottawa students struggle to find summer work as unemployment rises
According to Statistics Canada, 20.1 per cent of returning students β people aged 15 to 24 who attended school full time in March and who intend to study again in the fall β were unemployed in May, up 3.2 percent from the same month last year. Excluding the pandemic years, that's the highest rate since 2009, the agency said. Unemployment for young people in the same age bracket who are not returning to school has also increased to 12.2 per cent, compared to 11.6 per cent last year.
"It's been horrible," said Shannon Simbi, a grade 11 student in Ottawa. Simbi said she has applied to various positions at restaurants, retail stores and a retirement home without success.

Ottawa Public Health defends decision to reduce water testing at beaches
Ottawa Public Health is defending its decision to reduce its testing of the city's beach water, amid criticism that doing so makes swimming riskier. Until this swimming season, OPH has tested beach water quality daily but announced last month it would reduce testing to once a week starting June 21 to align with provincial standards, following a review of its beach water monitoring program.
According to Matthew Ruf, the Safe Food and Water Program manager with OPH, the shift will allow swimmers to pay attention to other factors when determining if it's safe to take a dip.

He began university in the '70s. Now, 49 years later, this 'farm boy' earns his degree from Guelph
It's graduation week for many University of Guelph students, but it's a particularly special day for one 68-year-old whose walk across the convocation stage was 49 years in the making.
Dave Burnett, who grew up in Guelph, Ont., started his Bachelor of Science degree at the university's Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) in 1976 almost immediately after completing high school.
Then, life happened.
Burnett told CBC K-W's The Morning Edition host Craig Norris that he mainly went to university to appease his mother.
Despite doing well academically, he dropped out because he said he wanted to work with his hands.
