He began university in the '70s. Now, 49 years later, this 'farm boy' earns his degree from Guelph
It's graduation week for many University of Guelph students, but it's a particularly special day for one 68-year-old whose walk across the convocation stage was 49 years in the making.
Dave Burnett, who grew up in Guelph, Ont., started his Bachelor of Science degree at the university's Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) in 1976 almost immediately after completing high school.
Then, life happened.
Burnett told CBC K-W's The Morning Edition host Craig Norris that he mainly went to university to appease his mother.
Despite doing well academically, he dropped out because he said he wanted to work with his hands.

Swimming now allowed at new Dows Lake dock
Grab your goggles and water wings, Ottawa: Swimming is now permitted from a recently installed dock at Dows Lake. New buoy lines marking off the deep-water swim area were unveiled Thursday, with a separate lane coming soon for swimmers "wishing to get their laps in," the National Capital Commission (NCC) said in a news release. The accessible dock was installed on the lake early last month, along with Muskoka chairs, bike racks and native plants.
At that time, the NCC said it was waiting for the results of water quality testing to see if a pilot project allowing swimming would be possible.

Canada Post Strike Stalemate Deepens as Arbitration Request Denied
Canada Post has refused the postal workers’ union’s proposal for binding arbitration, deepening the ongoing labour dispute for its 55,000 employees. The government-appointed mediator had brought both parties closer to agreement, but progress stalled when Canada Post declined the arbitration terms. The organization emphasized a desire for direct voting by employees, while the union criticized the refusal as evidence Canada Post isn’t seeking a fair resolution.

LRT maintenance, expansion work to disrupt service this summer
Ottawa's Confederation Line will be out of service for several days this summer as the east-west light rail track undergoes routine maintenance and other work related to its Stage 2 expansion.
In a memo to the mayor and council on Friday, Renée Amilcar, the city's general manager for transit services, said Line 1 will be closed intermittently throughout June and July "for planned annual maintenance and required O-Train East Extension integration activities." Replacement buses will be in service during any shutdowns.

Nuclear Waste Management Organization begins site selection process for 2nd deep geological repository
The Canadian government has yet to decide whether it would allow recycling spent nuclear fuel in the country, as the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) announces it will be engaging with the public to choose a site for the nation's second deep geological repository.
The nuclear energy organization has launched a two-year public engagement process — which will focus on both technical safety and community willingness — to refine the site selection strategy. The formal site selection process is expected to begin around 2028.

U.S. border officials told Global News that outbound searches of vehicles heading north into Canada are now the norm and will be happening indefinitely. Global News was given a behind-the-scenes tour of operations at the Blaine border crossing on Thursday and attended more than five hours of presentations from the port director, agriculture specialist and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.
U.S. officials say that while the majority of Canadians heading north are bringing back the usual gas and groceries, on May 1, they stepped up vehicle searches for drug smuggling and human trafficking.

Kiskatinaw River fire stable after weekend rainfall, evacuation orders still in place
The B.C. Wildfire Service says the Kiskatinaw River fire in the province's northeast has stabilized thanks to rain over the weekend.
B.C. Wildfire Service fire behaviour analyst Neal McLoughlin said in a video post on Sunday that a low-pressure system had moved into the region, bringing cloudy skies and soaking rain, with 10 millimetres of rainfall on Saturday and another 12 millimetres on Sunday. McLoughlin said the change in weather has helped reduce fire activity for the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire, located nearly 60 kilometres southeast of Dawson Creek, B.C.

Trump says he wants to 'get to the bottom' of new Canada-U.S. trade deal during G7 meeting (LIVE)
At the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, leaders from the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and host Prime Minister Mark Carney are meeting to discuss economic and security priorities. Ahead of the summit, Carney held a one-on-one meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. Afterward, Trump expressed optimism about reaching a new trade deal with Canada and criticized Russia's exclusion from the G8, incorrectly blaming former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—though the removal happened under Stephen Harper. The summit occurs amid ongoing U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and autos, and is expected to spark protests in Calgary and Banff.
