23andMe 'failed to take basic steps' to protect private information, investigation finds
DNA testing company 23andMe didn't have adequate data protections and ignored warning signs ahead of a massive data breach almost two years ago, an investigation by Canada's privacy commissioner found.
Commissioner Philippe Dufresne told reporters that proper protections were not in place in 2023 when hackers gained access to roughly 6.9 million profiles on the site — nearly half its client base.
"The breach serves as a cautionary tale for all organizations about the importance of data protections," Dufresne said during a news conference on Tuesday.

Montreal's new private patrols spark backlash from homelessness groups
Montreal has hired private security guards to patrol select neighborhoods this summer to address safety concerns and tensions between residents and unhoused people. However, organizations supporting the homeless criticize the decision, citing a lack of consultation and arguing that the funds would be better spent on outreach and support services. Marjolaine Despars of CAP St-Barnabé, which runs emergency shelters, said her organization was not consulted and was simply informed of the plan.

Class action on birth alerts gets green light against Ontario, but faces hurdles
A class-action lawsuit that hopes to help pregnant mothers who were red-flagged and had their newborns taken away by child welfare agencies has been certified to proceed against the Ontario government — but it's only a partial win for the plaintiffs.
Part of the lawsuit — to hold 49 children's aid societies (CAS) across the province accountable for those "birth alerts" — failed to get the green light from an Ontario Superior Court judge.

Roofs torn off after possible tornado hits Quebec's Eastern Townships
A powerful mesocyclone storm struck Danville in Quebec’s Eastern Townships on Thursday, bringing 50 to 100 mm of rain in under 20 minutes, strong winds, and hail. The storm tore off roofs, sent trailers flying, and caused thousands of power outages. Resident Manon Provencher described the experience as terrifying and abnormal. Environment Canada is investigating but has not ruled out a tornado. The storm continued toward Saint-Georges in Beauce, also damaging Saint-Évariste-de-Forsyth, where trees and power lines were downed. Cleanup efforts are ongoing in affected areas.
