'Like a clear-cut forestry operation': Cleanup begins at downburst-hit Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park
A powerful downburst storm struck Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park in northeastern Ontario on June 21, destroying at least 100 trailers and vehicles by toppling trees throughout the area. Cameron Hockey, the park's zone manager, compared the devastation to a clear-cut forestry operation. He emphasized that the top priority is restoring safe access so people can retrieve their belongings. Despite the extensive damage, no fatalities were reported—a fact Hockey called a miracle. The storm’s destructive force came from strong downward winds, distinguishing it from a tornado.

Alberta Finance Minister to Deliver Year‑End Fiscal Update
Alberta’s Finance Minister Nate Horner will release the province’s fiscal results for the year ending March 31, 2025, closing the books on what was previously projected to be a nearly C$6 billion surplus . While forecasts for 2024–25 lean strongly positive, the current budget year (2025–26) is expected to swing into a C$5.2 billion deficit due to lower oil revenues, new tax cuts, and global economic uncertainties.

Portage and Main reopens to pedestrians, marking 'historic moment' for Winnipeg
The shrouds were removed from the brand new walk signals at the intersection of Portage and Main on Friday morning and the remaining construction barricades hauled away, as 46 years of prohibited pedestrian crossings came to an end at Winnipeg's famous corner.
"This is very, very special today. Today marks a historic moment," said Mayor Scott Gillingham, as a pedestrian walk light in the background turned on for one of the first times around 10:30 a.m. and a stream of people began crossing Main Street.
"This intersection is important. It has been central to Winnipeg's history. It will remain vital to our community's future."

City warns of surge in homeless population by 2035
A city report says that Ottawa's homeless population could surge by almost 60 per cent over the next decade without substantial investments in affordable housing. The city released its housing needs assessment on Friday. Its modelling estimates that, under a business-as-usual scenario, Ottawa could have a total of 14,734 people experiencing homelessness annually by 2035. That's up from 9,326 currently.
Those figures represent people who enter a homeless shelter at any time during the year, rather than the number of people who are homeless at a specific point in time.

Health minister confident deal will be reached to prevent mass resignations at St. Clare's
Newfoundland and Labrador's Health Minister Krista Lynn Howell said a resolution is "imminent" regarding the internal medicine team at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital in St. John's, where five internists threatened to resign over the loss of the medical residency program. The program's removal created a staffing crisis affecting 24/7 patient care. While Howell criticized the doctors' tactics, she emphasized ongoing efforts with the health authority and medical association to resolve the issue. Lawyer Kyle Rees, representing the doctors, expressed optimism, noting the matter is being taken seriously.

Alberta premier intends to 'battle' injunction on transgender health-care law in court
After an Alberta judge granted a temporary injunction blocking a provincial law that would ban doctors from providing gender-affirming care to youth, Premier Danielle Smith said she intends to fight the decision in court.
"The court had said that they think that there will be irreparable harm if the law goes ahead. I feel the reverse," Smith said on her weekend radio program, Your Province, Your Premier, on Saturday, a day after Justice Allison Kuntz of the Alberta Court of King's Bench handed down a written judgment on Bill 26.
"We want to battle this out, and the way you do that is you go to the higher levels of court. If we were to impose the notwithstanding clause, everything would stop. We actually think that we've got a very solid case."

City employee charged over vandalism of National Holocaust Monument
The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has charged a man for the vandalism earlier this month of the National Holocaust Monument. On Friday afternoon, the police service announced a 46-year-old man has been accused of mischief to a war memorial, mischief exceeding $5,000 and harassment by threatening conduct. Police did not name the man.
In a post Saturday on social media, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said he was "very disturbed" to learn he is an on-leave city employee. "As a community and as an employer, the actions at the Monument do not represent our values. I've asked city officials to take all appropriate action in light of these developments," wrote Sutcliffe, who also did not identify him.

Albertans’ desire to separate from Canada has never been higher, Premier Danielle Smith says
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the public desire in her province to separate from Canada has never been higher. Speaking Thursday to reporters in Calgary, Smith said Albertans feel deeply frustrated and angry with Ottawa.
She cited a separatist candidate who garnered almost 18 per cent of the vote in a byelection in the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills riding earlier this week. “I’ve never seen such a high level of separatist sentiment,” she said.

An Alberta judge has granted a temporary injunction blocking Bill 26, which would ban gender-affirming care for youth. Premier Danielle Smith disagreed with the ruling, stating on her radio show that she believes the law prevents harm rather than causes it. She plans to challenge the decision in higher courts rather than invoking the notwithstanding clause. Legal expert Eric Adams noted the injunction doesn't guarantee a constitutional victory but indicates that strong legal arguments will be presented against the bill. Egale Canada said the ruling suggests Bill 26 deserves reconsideration.

The Regina Humane Society is partnering with Prairie Clean Energy (PCE) to introduce a locally made, environmentally friendly kitty litter made from flax straw. Prairie Clean Cat Litter is made entirely from flax straw, a waste product left over when flax is harvested.
"It is completely biodegradable, completely natural, and it eliminates the cat pee smell," said Mark Cooper, CEO of PCE in Regina. "Your houses are going to smell cleaner, your cats are gonna be happier, you're gonna have less ammonia in your home, and it is all Saskatchewan-made flax."

New Alberta referendum rules looming as calls for separation met with opposition petition
Starting Friday, Alberta will lower the threshold for citizen-initiated referendums, making it easier to propose votes on major issues—including independence. Premier Danielle Smith's government will allow petitions with 177,000 signatures (within 120 days) to trigger a provincewide vote. The Alberta Prosperity Project plans to use the new rules to launch a petition asking if Alberta should become a sovereign country.
Meanwhile, former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk is countering the separatist push. He’s already applied under the existing, higher-threshold law requiring 600,000 signatures for a petition affirming Alberta’s place in Canada. His petition, *Alberta Forever Canada*, is now listed on the Elections Alberta website. Only one petition per issue can proceed at a time, which may block the separatist campaign.

Accessibility minister's comments about ASL interpreter a 'knife right in the back' for deaf graduate
A woman who was excited to celebrate with her family at a graduation event for Indigenous women on Thursday says it's hard to look at her college certificate after the experience was tainted by comments Manitoba's accessibility minister made about sharing the stage with a sign-language interpreter.
Deborah Owczar, who is deaf, said the ASL interpreter was removed from the stage after Minister Nahanni Fontaine's speech, depriving her and her daughter access to participation during the first annual Mino'Ayaawag Ikwewag Celebration of Indigenous Women Graduates held in downtown Winnipeg on Thursday.
She said she was looking forward to getting dressed up with her daughter and celebrating with other Indigenous high school, college and university grads.

Edmonton city councillor's infill moratorium attempt fails for legal reasons
Edmonton city council won't be putting a moratorium on infill, after the city's legal team advised that doing so would contravene provincial legislation.
Ward pihêsiwin Coun. Tim Cartmell, who's also a mayoral candidate in the upcoming election, put forward a motion Monday evening to pause development approvals for mid-block properties, in the small scale residential zone, until the city re-examines plans for groups of neighbourhoods. "There's a reasonable opportunity to pause this work while we get better clarity on some of the adjustments that we might make," Cartmell said during the meeting.
