Ottawa mom warns others after teen daughter dragged by Uber and injured
An Ottawa mother says she's frustrated with Uber and disappointed with local police after her daughter was dragged along a street by an Uber vehicle and injured.
Liliane, whose last name CBC is withholding to protect the identity of her teenager because she's worried about stigma at school, says nearly three months after the incident, she's seen no consequences for the driver, nor any accountability from either the company or police — until CBC News started asking questions. "People need to know that Uber and companies like this are operating with impunity in our communities," said Lilliane, who has been accessing accident benefits through her own car insurance company.

Canada's real estate becomes "buyer's market" as homes are most affordable in 3 years: report
Owning a home in Canada might be the most affordable it's been in three years, according to a new report by the Royal Bank of Canada.
"The positive shift in the last five quarters has helped homebuyers' prospects across all regions and housing market segments. However, it's been condo buyers that have seen the most significant turnaround," the report said. The report predicts stable home prices over the next two years.

Carney's cabinet asked to find 'ambitious savings' ahead of fall budget
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is directing federal cabinet ministers to propose ambitious savings plans aimed at reducing government program spending by 7.5% next year. He will lead a “comprehensive expenditure review” focused on cutting day-to-day federal spending to free up funds for investments that support a stronger Canadian economy.
In letters sent Monday, ministers were asked to evaluate whether current programs are effective, essential to federal responsibilities, and not duplicating efforts by other governments. This aligns with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s campaign pledge to “spend less, so Canada can invest more.” Despite the cost-cutting push, the government has committed to increased defence spending, including an extra $9.3 billion this fiscal year.

Part of Mackenzie King Bridge in 'advanced state of deterioration'
Ottawa's Mackenzie King Bridge is in worse shape than expected, as the city learns that major components of the section over Nicholas Street are in an "advanced state of deterioration."
That's forcing the city to launch another rehabilitation project, over and above ongoing renewal work that has faced repeated delays. The city is budgeting $5.4 million for the extra work over Nicholas Street, just east of the Rideau Centre, with the project schedule putting the completion date in the summer of 2027.

Competition Bureau advances investigation into Amazon's pricing policy
The Competition Bureau is advancing an investigation into Amazon to determine if the online seller is "engaging in conduct that may be an abuse of dominance," the agency said on Tuesday.
According to the bureau, they're investigating the Amazon Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy, which allows Amazon to penalize sellers for some actions — including if they list an item for sale at a price that's considerably higher than a recent price that item had been offered at, either on Amazon or elsewhere.
The goal of the investigation is to determine if the policy forces sellers to charge customers more than they otherwise would for a product, or if it prevents competition by keeping sellers from listing their products for lower prices elsewhere.

Vancouver Art Gallery cutting staff, programming by about 30%
The Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) is making deep cuts to its programming and staffing in an attempt to balance its budget. Eva Respini, VAG interim co-CEO, said overall, the cuts will amount to about 30 per cent. She said before the layoffs, there were 129 employees. Last month, 16 people accepted voluntary departure incentives, and 18 people have received layoffs since then.
"We're really looking across the institution, trying to leave no stone unturned, and we really tried to save as many roles, as many jobs as possible," said Respini, adding that there's a union seniority process now taking place that could affect the final number of people who lose their jobs.

ER closures forced by shortage of doctors, nurses raise fears in rural Sask.
Residents in some rural Saskatchewan communities say closures forced by a shortage of doctors and nurses have left them without access to emergency room services, forcing residents to travel long distances in critical moments.
"The closures are just … coming one after the other," said Angela Silzer, who runs Interlake Human Resources Corporation, a non-profit organization and group home for adults with intellectual disabilities in Watrous, southeast of Saskatoon.
Silzer's facility is across the street from the local hospital, which has had to close its ER dozens of times since the start of the year.
