B.C. Labour Board certifies union at Amazon facility in Delta, B.C., Unifor says
Amazon workers at a fulfillment center in Delta, B.C., have been officially certified to unionize after the B.C. Labour Relations Board ruled that Amazon interfered with the unionization process. The board found Amazon engaged in "deliberate, calculated, and pervasive" anti-union practices, including ramping up hiring and spreading anti-union messaging, which compromised the fairness of the vote. As a result, the board issued a rare remedial order granting Unifor certification. Amazon plans to appeal the decision.

Research project at Churchill facility raises alarm about potential impact of oil spill in Arctic waters
A natural remedy that has previously helped counter oil spills will be too slow to "do any useful work" if there's a spill in the Canadian Arctic, increasing chances of "catastrophic" harm, researchers say.
Preliminary findings from the GenIce II research team, led by Eric Collins from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, suggest oil-degrading microbes respond very slowly to oil-contaminated Arctic waters. "We do see that it takes at least a few weeks or a month for the microbes to respond and actually start to break down the oil, and that's just too long in the case of a real oil spill," said Collins, who has a doctorate in biological oceanography and is a Canada Research Chair in Arctic Marine Microbial Ecosystem Services.

A farmer protested policy at a Danielle Smith town hall. 5 days later, it was paused
Chad Anderson had travelled 90 minutes from his farm near Cremona, Alta., to bend the premier's ear, but it was starting to look futile.
He'd come to a town hall with Danielle Smith and Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson in Okotoks, an apparent rehearsal of sorts for the Alberta Next panelsthat kick off next week, with Smith presiding as chair.
Last week's Okotoks event was approaching its end, and a too-long lineup of attendees separated Anderson from the question microphone, all of them hoping to plant a seed in the premier's mind.

Nearly one-third of forests in northeast B.C. could burn by year's end: province
Nearly 7,000 square kilometres have burned in B.C.'s Prince George Fire Centre since June, making it the hardest-hit region among the provinceโs six fire centres. Forest Minister Ravi Parmar said nearly 30% of the regionโs forested land base could burn by year-end. This year's and last year's wildfire seasons have already scorched more forest in the area than the previous 60 years combined, totaling 10% of the regionโs land. Parmar highlighted the severe physical and emotional toll on residents, including displacement and smoke exposure.

Calls to cancel B.C. Ferries contract with China misguided, say mayors in ferry-reliant communities
B.C. Ferries' announcement that its four new vessels will be built in China has made waves, with the ripple effects reaching all the way to Ottawa. Canada's transport minister, Chrystia Freeland, has said she's disappointed with the decision and the Conservatives, both federally and in B.C., have gone further, saying the deal should be scrapped entirely.
But no Canadian companies bid on the contract, and B.C. Ferries says it would have cost at least $1 billion more to have the ferries built in Europe. Some mayors in ferry-dependent communities say residents don't care where the new ships are built, as long as it results in more reliable service and affordable fares.

Police data shows intimate partner violence calls on the rise in Ontario
The growing volume of domestic abuse cases in both Lanark and Renfrew counties in rural eastern Ontario is alarmingly high, according to community agencies and police data. "We're seeing an increase in our crisis calls, and so what we're finding is that people are calling about acts of violence. They're not calling to say, 'I'm a little bit concerned'. They're calling when they're in it," said Erin Lee, executive director of Lanark County Interval House.
Lee, who for more than three decades has worked in shelters for women fleeing abuse in Carleton Place and Ottawa, said last year the crisis line at the Lanark County shelter received 3,000 calls โ hundreds more than the agency received in the years before COVID.

9 Ontario First Nations ask for injunction against Bill 5, say law represents 'clear and present danger'
Nine First Nations in Ontario are asking a court to declare a pair of federal and provincial laws meant to fast-track infrastructure projects unconstitutional and are seeking an injunction that would prevent the governments from using some of the most contentious aspects.
The Indigenous communities say in the legal challenge filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice that the federal law known as Bill C-5 and the Ontario law known as Bill 5 both represent a "clear and present danger" to the First Nations' self-determination rights to ways of life on their territories.
"While the laws do leave open or commit that there will be some First Nation consultation at the very first stage ... involvement in that decision alone is a smoke and mirrors trick, deflecting attention from all the other ways the laws necessarily diminish the ability of First Nations to engage on the regimes' broader consequences," they write in the court challenge.

He pleaded guilty in September to multiple charges, including drug importation, trafficking, money laundering, and possession of crime-related property. After time served and other deductions, he will spend about 14 years and five months in prison. His partner, Maria Kiguru, who was pregnant at the time and also involved in laundering money, received a two-year conditional sentence.

While British Columbiaโs child welfare system has made strides since the tragic death of an Indigenous child, concerns remain. The province now sees over 90% of children in care within 90 days and has initiated a child wellbeing strategy. Federal government files $60M counterclaim against LaSalle Causeway contractor
The Canadian government is countersuing the contractor it hired to repair the LaSalle Causeway lift bridge in Kingston, Ont., for $60 million and counting.
In a statement of defence filed in response to a lawsuit brought by Landform Civil Infrastructures Inc. (LCI), lawyers for the Attorney General argue the company caused a "catastrophic failure" that resulted in the demolition of the century-old crossing. "Any damages suffered by LCI were a consequence of its own failure to properly perform the Work," the 34-page document states.

Heated dispute over Health P.E.I. benchmarks for family doctors heading for mediation
Three of the biggest players in Prince Edward Island's health-care system have agreed to begin a mediation process regarding how many patients family doctors can and should handle.
In a joint news release late Tuesday, the Medical Society of P.E.I., along with the Department of Health and Wellness and Health P.E.I. said they've been having "meaningful and constructive" conversations "over the past number of days" about a controversial side document to the latest Physician Services Agreement.
"While the mediation process unfolds, government, Health P.E.I. and [the society] will work together so Islanders will continue to gain access to primary care services โ including those who are currently on the patient registry," the joint statement from the group said.
