'We've been looking for almost a year': Why Sask.'s housing market is red hot
It is a sellers' market across Saskatchewan and first-time homebuyers say they are having a hard time making that milestone purchase, bidding on multiple homes that end up selling for more than the asking price.
"I just thought that it would be a lot easier in a city like Regina," said Ruth Aguilar, 25, who has been looking to buy her first home with her husband, Aaron Gunther, for almost a year.
"We put an offer on three houses, but they're going for thousands over asking, like some even upwards of $50,000 over asking," Aguilar said.

SIU clears Thunder Bay, Ont., police of wrongdoing in First Nation woman's death
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared a Thunder Bay police officer of any wrongdoing in the December 30, 2023, death of 21-year-old Jenna Ostberg, a Bearskin Lake First Nation member. Ostberg was found dead in a closet at a Thunder Bay residence, hours after three 911 calls were made. The first, at 2:05 a.m., reported her as an unwanted person; a second call at 2:23 a.m. cancelled the request, believing she had left. A third call at 10:34 a.m. reported her body. The SIU could not confirm her exact time of death but suggested suicide may have occurred after 2:42 a.m., based on her last phone activity. The SIU concluded there was no evidence to support criminal charges against the responding officer.

Manitoba needs more fire rangers to keep communities safe from future risks, chief says
The province is going to need to shore up its force of wildfire fighters in the future if it hopes to save more remote communities from having to endure the worsening cycle of forced evacuations, destroyed property and destruction of forests, says a northern Manitoba grand chief.
Grand Chief Alex McDougall of Anisininew Okimawin — a coalition of First Nations from northeastern Manitoba's Island Lake area, which has been largely evacuated due to wildfires — says more boots on the ground would've been a game-changer for his region.

Implement countrywide Red Dress Alert to prevent need for landfill searches for women: MMIWG advocate
As one landfill search ends and another is planned to begin, an MMIWG advocate says countrywide implementation of the Red Dress Alert and addressing "systemic racism" could prevent the agony of such searches ever needing to happen again.
"We know when someone is missing, time is of an essence to locate them and to find them safely," said Hilda Anderson-Pyrz, a member of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in Manitoba and chair of the National Family and Survivors Circle.

More than 100 candidates — most in Canadian history — to run against Poilievre in byelection
The upcoming byelection in Alberta's Battle River-Crowfoot will set a new Canadian record for the most candidates on a federal ballot, with 102 registered so far—surpassing the previous record of 91. The surge is driven largely by the Longest Ballot Committee, a group advocating for electoral reform through citizen assemblies. The byelection was triggered by MP Damien Kurek’s resignation to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run after losing his former seat. The Committee aims to register up to 200 candidates before the July 28 deadline, using long ballots as a form of protest to highlight the need for more representative governance.

Aid groups rally to help First Nations facing mass food spoilage after northwestern Ontario outages
Aid organizations are ramping up efforts to replenish supplies after power outages across half a dozen First Nations in northwestern Ontario led to mass food spoilage. Last weekend, hydro poles along the Wataynikaneyap Power line were damaged by wildfires, leading to a shutdown of vital utilities across Pikangikum, North Spirit Lake, Keewaywin, Deer Lake, Sandy Lake and Poplar Hill First Nations. Only Sandy Lake and Deer Lake had access to backup diesel fuel.
After four days of outages, the First Nations are still recuperating from the substantial food spoilage, overheating in homes, and shortages of food, fuel and other essential supplies. Wataynikaneyap Power said restoration was completed as of 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Jasper businesses face slower peak tourism season 1 year after wildfire
Tourism is rebounding at Jasper National Park, but the influx of visitors to the mountain park isn't quite what it was before the wildfire of 2024, business owners say.
"I do feel like it's slower than normal," Robert Logan, co-owner of Jasper Motorcycle Tours, said in an interview last week.
He is one of several business owners who lost their brick-and-mortar spaces and are now working out of a pop-up village in a parking lot off Connaught Drive.

Two University of Calgary environmental science students, Anna Gleig and Ava Haddad, rescued a foal stuck in the Kananaskis River on July 12. While paddling, they encountered a distressed group of horses and noticed a foal pinned against a bridge structure, unable to escape. The mother horse was panicked, unable to reach her baby due to the water's depth. Recognizing the danger, Gleig and Haddad intervened and ultimately saved the foal, later reuniting it with its mother.
