2 northern Alberta municipalities declare agricultural disasters due to dry conditions
Two rural municipalities in northwestern Alberta are sounding the alarm over extremely dry conditions that local officials say are threatening the livelihood of many cattle ranchers in the region.
On July 8, the Municipal District of Greenview, located about 400 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, declared a municipal agricultural disaster for its livestock industry. With widespread dry weather persisting throughout the region, the neighbouring County of Grande Prairie also declared an agricultural disaster on Friday due to similar concerns for their livestock herds.

2 provincial byelections in August will be a test of public mood, says UPEI political scientist
When voters head to the polls in two byelections next month, UPEI political science department chair Don Desserud says the results will offer insight into public attitude toward Prince Edward Island's political parties.
Provincial byelections will be held on Aug. 12 to fill vacancies in District 9, Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park, and District 15, Brackley-Hunter River. This Premier Rob Lantz announced last week that cabinet had passed an order in council to allow Elections P.E.I. to issue the writ of election for both districts.

More disruptions to maternity services possible across B.C., health minister says
B.C.'s health minister says more disruptions could be coming to maternity services across the province after people with high-risk pregnancies in Prince George were warned they could be sent out of the city for care starting in August.
Prince George is the largest service centre in northern B.C. and often provides health-care services for the entire region. But in a notice to patients on Monday, Northern Health said a shortage of obstetrical specialists could limit care options available to expecting parents in the city.

Measles exposure alert issued for Alberta Children's Hospital emergency room
Alberta Health Services has issued a measles exposure alert for the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary after a person with a confirmed case of measles visited the hospital's emergency department while infectious. The exposure period is between 10:08 a.m. and 2:14 p.m. on July 13.
If you were in the emergency department at that time, and you were born after 1969, and you've had fewer than two documented doses of measles vaccine, health officials warn that you may be at risk for developing measles and should self-monitor for symptoms.

Carney tells premiers he'll only sign a U.S. trade deal 'in the best interest of Canadians'
The prospect of Canada reaching a trade deal with the United States by the Aug. 1 deadline appears uncertain, with Prime Minister Mark Carney insisting his government will only sign a new agreement if there is one worth signing.
"The Government of Canada will not accept a bad deal," Carney said in French in Huntsville, Ont., Tuesday. "Our objective is not to reach a deal whatever it costs. We are pursuing a deal that will be in the best interest of Canadians." When it comes to the prospect of reaching a deal, Carney said "we'll see" and that "complex negotiations" continue. He said if there isn't a deal that works for Canada, his government will "take stock" and consider what to do next.

$68M project to secure, revamp Canada's asylum system shut down unexpectedly, documents show
A $68-million project led by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that was meant to revamp Canada's outdated asylum system and enhance the integrity of the country's borders was quietly shut down last year β an "unexpected" move for some in the government because it was only partly completed, internal documents show. Now, some critics fear the outcomes that were achieved may be more harmful than beneficial for people seeking protection in Canada.
IRCC's "asylum interoperability project" began in 2019 and was supposed to wrap up by 2022. It came during a surge of asylum seekers entering Canada, putting pressure on an already struggling system that relied heavily on paper files. Its launch followed calls for major reform.

Data reveals dramatic spike in patients leaving B.C. emergency rooms without receiving care
Provincial data obtained through a freedom-of-information request reveals that the number of patients in B.C. leaving emergency rooms without receiving care has spiked by 86 per cent β with the largest increases seen in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Island Health authorities.
The data reveals the number of unscheduled visits to emergency rooms across B.C.'s health authorities between 2018 and 2025, and breaks down patient visits by their Canadian triage and acuity scale (CTAS) β a system used to categorize patients based on the urgency of their case.
