Hockey Canada sexual assault trial will be decided Thursday
On Thursday, Justice Maria Carroccia will deliver her decisions in the world junior hockey sexual assault trial β a case that dates back to 2018 and has manoeuvred numerous curves as it played out over eight weeks in a London, Ont., court.
Five former players are charged with sexually assaulting a woman, known as E.M. due to a standard publication ban, in a hotel room in June 2018 while the team was in the southwestern Ontario city to celebrate their world championship win months earlier.

Data reveals dramatic spike in patients leaving B.C. emergency rooms without receiving care
Provincial data obtained through a freedom-of-information request reveals that the number of patients in B.C. leaving emergency rooms without receiving care has spiked by 86 per cent β with the largest increases seen in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Island Health authorities.
The data reveals the number of unscheduled visits to emergency rooms across B.C.'s health authorities between 2018 and 2025, and breaks down patient visits by their Canadian triage and acuity scale (CTAS) β a system used to categorize patients based on the urgency of their case.

All 5 former Hockey Canada players found not guilty of sexual assault
All five former members of Canadaβs 2018 world junior hockey team were found not guilty of sexual assault by Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia. The judge ruled that the complainantβs testimony was not credible or reliable, and the Crown did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the complainant did not consent to the sexual activity that occurred in a London, Ontario hotel room. The decision was based on inconsistencies between the complainant's 2024 testimony and her 2022 civil lawsuit. The complainant was not present in court but watched the proceedings remotely.

Africville Family Reunion returns with new safety measures
Improved lighting, additional security and a registration system will be in place at the Africville Family Reunion this coming weekend, in response to a shooting that left five people injured at the event last July.
The new measures have been implemented as the result of a safety audit organizers requested after unprecedented gun violence at the event, which reunites former residents and descendants of the historic Black community.
Running for more than 40 years, the weekend festival is one of the most important of the year for many people who return to what is now a National Historic Site, after the neighbourhood was torn down by the city of Halifax in the 1960's.

Federal government to stop funding hotel rooms for asylum seekers, IRCC says
Asylum seekers staying in federally-funded hotels will soon have to check out as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says that funding will end in September.
A spokesperson for IRCC told CBC News via email that as of Thursday, the federal government was housing 485 asylum seekers in five hotels in Ontario and Quebec, noting it has spent approximately $1.1 billion on temporary hotel housing for asylum seekers since 2020. Trump says US hasnβt had "a lot of luck" with Canada: βTheyβll just pay tariffsβ
U.S. President Donald Trump commented Friday on trade negotiations with Canada, saying "We havenβt really had a lot of luck with Canada. I think Canada could be one where theyβll just pay tariffs, itβs not really a negotiation.β
βWeβre working very diligently with Europe, the EU which covers a lot of countries. We have the confines of a deal with China. We donβt have a deal with Canada, we havenβt been focused on it,β Trump added.
The remarks come just a day after Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc told reporters he was feeling βencouragedβ following meetings with both Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and American lawmakers.

Jasper bolsters fire resiliency standards after devastating 2024 wildfire
Following the July 2024 wildfire that destroyed 30% of Jasper, the Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada are enforcing stricter fire safety measures. New housing must now use non-combustible materials like tin or asphalt for roofs and siding, replacing flammable materials such as cedar shingles. These changes align with national FireSmart guidelines to make properties more fire-resilient.
Fire Chief Mathew Conte highlighted how cedar shake roofs, wooden decks, and vegetation like juniper bushes worsened fire damage during the blaze. To boost preparedness, the fire department has hired a prevention captain, conducted 30 advanced home assessments, and is offering residential sprinkler kits at cost. Public engagement has increased as more residents seek to implement fire prevention strategies.

Ontario's Halton Region shutting down heritage division, getting rid of 30,000-item historical collection
Halton Region in Ontario is closing its heritage services department and plans to offload about 30,000 historical items, including artifacts, photographs, and archives. The region will first offer the items to local public institutions like the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Halton Regional Police. Any remaining items will be auctioned publicly, a move critics say is unethical and undermines public trust. The decision, made in a closed council session on July 9, reverses earlier plans for an \$8 million heritage centre. The region says it aims to keep the items in public hands and within Halton.

Cold-hardy citrus? In my backyard? With climate change, it's more likely than you think
Some gardeners may be able to grow palms and even cold-hardy citrus in parts of Canada, according to the federal government's latest Plant Hardiness Zones map, the first update since 2014.
The map, first developed in the 1960s and updated every 10 years in the last few decades, looks at what can grow across the country, based on temperature, precipitation and other weather patterns. It found that some plants can now grow in regions they couldn't have previously, while other areas can host new plants entirely.
Much of that is due to the steady march of climate change. In this way, each map update has marked an increasingly warm Canada.
