Smoky conditions continue to cover the GTA, but relief is expected in the days ahead
Poor air quality warnings due to wildfire smoke are still in place for the Greater Toronto Area on Tuesday for the fourth consecutive day. Smoke from forest fires will continue to affect southern Ontario on Tuesday and possibly on Wednesday, Environment Canada said in a special air quality statement.
With clean air coming in from the east, air quality is expected to improve through Tuesday with "the worst of it" gone by Wednesday, says Lucas Alexopoulos, operational meteorologist with Environment Canada.

McGill faculty challenge Quebec's Bill 89, arguing it violates constitutional right to strike
Four McGill University faculty associations representing over 500 academics have filed a court challenge against Quebec's Bill 89, arguing it violates the constitutional right to strike. Passed in May and set to take effect in November, the law gives the labour minister broad authority to restrict strikes that may harm the public and mandates minimum service levels during labour disputes. Critics, including law professor Evan Fox-Decent and labour expert Barry Eidlin, say the bill undermines constitutional protections and threatens both academic independence and the foundations of collective bargaining in Quebec.

3 men accused of facilitating terrorism in alleged extremist plot denied bail
Three men accused in an alleged anti-government terrorist plot in Quebec have been denied bail, with the judge citing concerns that their release would undermine the administration of justice. Simon Angers-Audet, Raphaël Lagacé, and Marc-Aurèle Chabot face charges including facilitating terrorist activity, illegal firearms storage, and possession of explosives. A fourth accused, Matthew Forbes, who faces weapons charges but not terrorism-related ones, was granted bail under strict conditions, including GPS monitoring. Chabot and Forbes are active Canadian Armed Forces members. The accused were allegedly involved in plans to form an anti-government "community" north of Quebec City.

Man who lit fatal Napanee fire sentenced to 7 years for manslaughter, arson
The man who set fire to a transitional housing building in Napanee, Ont. last August, leading to the death of well-loved local fixture Walter Lasher, was sentenced on Friday to seven years in prison.
Ontario Court of Justice Judge Geoffrey Griffin said a total sentence of nine-and-a-half years was appropriate, given Andrew Thompson's "serious and violent crimes," but gave him credit for pretrial custody largely spent triple-bunked and in lockdown. The 32-year-old looked blank as his sentence was read out.
