Man charged for 'surfing' atop moving train near Alexandria

A man is facing charges for allegedly climbing atop a moving Via Rail train in eastern Ontario earlier this week, in what police are calling an incident of "train surfing."

On Wednesday at about 3 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers for the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry area responded to a train stopped on the tracks northwest of Alexandria, Ont., a town located about 100 kilometres east of Ottawa. The train had departed from Montreal and was headed to Ottawa.  Passengers who later spoke to CBC Ottawa said the train was stopped in the middle of the woods while en route. Police eventually came to apprehend the man, ultimately delaying the train for hours.

Kingston fire destroys Cabot Academy elementary school

The Kingston wildfire in Conception Bay North has grown to 9,838 hectares, destroying about 100 homes, including at least 33 in Small Point-Broad Cove-Blackhead-Adam's Cove and 10 in Kingston. Other fires include Paddy’s Pond (318 ha) and Martin Lake (2,160 ha). Air support was grounded Friday morning due to low ceilings but resumed as weather improved, with rain, cooler temperatures, and shifting winds expected to aid suppression. About 100 firefighters, including Canadian Armed Forces and Ontario crews, are working on the northern flank. Evacuation orders were lifted for Three Island Pond, but Job’s Cove remains on alert. Air quality warnings are in effect for northern Avalon Peninsula and St. John’s. Cabot Academy in Western Bay was destroyed.

With flight attendant strike looming, union accuses minister of speaking 'on behalf' of Air Canada

As Air Canada cancelled flights on Thursday ahead of a possible flight attendants' strike, the union representing those workers accused the federal jobs minister of speaking "on behalf" of the company amid a contentious labour dispute.

"Every party has expressed support for our effort to end unpaid work, except for the governing Liberal Party," Wesley Lesosky, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees' Air Canada component, said during a news conference. CUPE national president Mark Hancock said that after the union presented several wage offers to Air Canada, federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu "brought a 'no' from Air Canada to the bargaining table."

Flight attendants ordered back to work say labour law violates right to strike

The Canadian government has once again used a contentious section of labour law to stop a major strike — a move unions say sets a dangerous precedent for labour relations in this country.

Federal jobs minister Patty Hajdu has invoked Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to send Air Canada flight attendants back to work, less than 12 hours after they walked off the job.

Section 107 gives the minister unilateral authority to order the end of a work stoppage to "maintain or secure industrial peace."

Heron Road Community Centre to reopen after nearly 2 years as emergency shelter

Community programming will soon resume at the Heron Road Community Centre, nearly two years after the facility began serving as a shelter for the homeless, according to the local councillor.

On Friday, the last people staying there were transitioned to other shelters in the city, including the YMCA and the Queen Street transitional facility that opened last month, Alta Vista Coun. Marty Carr said. "There was a place found for every single one of those residents in a more suitable location than a community centre," Carr told CBC on Saturday.
