Henderson ends title drought, winning home CPKC Women's Open for 2nd time of career

Brooke Henderson has won on the LPGA Tour 14 times but winning the CPKC Women's Open a second time is on another level for her.

Henderson shot a 4-under 67 to pull ahead of Australia's Minjee Lee by a stroke in Sunday's final round to win the Canadian national women's golf championship. The win ended a drought that spanned more than two years, adding extra lustre to the title for Henderson.

"This one I think might be the longest in between victories, so for that reason it makes it super special," said Henderson. "To be able to win the Canadian Open, the CPKC Women's Open, for the second time is so special."

Dr. Oz wants to take B.C. ostriches facing cull order — but scientists question his claims

U.S. TV personality and federal health official Dr. Mehmet Oz has reiterated an offer to house hundreds of B.C. ostriches facing a cull order, claiming the birds are scientifically unique.

Over 400 birds at Universal Ostrich farm in Edgewood, B.C., have been ordered culled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) after highly pathogenic avian flu was detected on the farm last December.

The order has survived multiple court challenges by the farm and has attracted attention from U.S. officials like Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as well as questions from dedicated supporters over whether the Canadian government was overreaching with the cull order.

Source of deadly legionnaires' outbreak in London, Ont., is ID'd as more become sick

Health officials in London, Ontario, have traced a persistent legionnaires’ disease outbreak — which has killed four people and hospitalized over 90 — to Sofina Foods Inc., a large meat-processing plant. The Middlesex-London Health Unit confirmed the bacterial subtype from the plant matched the strain causing the outbreak. Since July, cases have been reported within a six-kilometre radius, with contaminated cooling towers also detected at multiple sites, including Victoria Hospital. The outbreak recently grew with 25 new cases after authorities initially thought it was over.

Canada narrows choices for new submarines to German and South Korean bidders

As he delivered the hard sell pitch last spring for Canada to buy his submarines, Oliver Burkhard, the CEO of Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), used the phrase "strategic partnership" half a dozen times.

Canada would be part of "a family," he said.

We will — perhaps — soon get a better sense whether that approach is music to the ears of Prime Minister Mark Carney and key members of his cabinet.

South Nation Conservation Authority declares critically low water levels

The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNCA) has declared a Level 3 low water advisory — the most serious advisory it issues — for its jurisdiction in eastern Ontario, including parts of Ottawa.

"Level 3 conditions indicate that water supply no longer meets demand in certain regions and ongoing drought conditions are putting increased pressure on surface and groundwater supplies," the authority wrote in a news release Tuesday. It asked that residents reduce their water consumption and stop using water when not absolutely necessary.

Canada signs critical minerals deal with Germany, narrows down new submarine suppliers

Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Germany late Monday and has signed a critical minerals partnership with Germany that encourages the joint public financing of natural resources projects as Ottawa works to boost development and exports to Europe.

Additionally, Canada has narrowed down its shopping list for its next fleet of submarines to those made by two suppliers: Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and South Korea's Hanwha Ocean Co. Ottawa plans to replace the Royal Canadian Navy's current fleet of four Victoria-class submarines over the next decade with up to 12 new subs.

Intruder in Lindsay, Ont., break-in used a crossbow, court documents say

The Lindsay, Ont., man charged in an early-morning break-in last week wielded a crossbow in the incident and was out on probation at the time, according to court documents filed Wednesday.

The violent episode on Aug. 18 — which led to charges laid against both the alleged intruder, Michael Kyle Breen, and the home's resident, Jeremy David McDonald — set off a cross-Canada debate over what constitutes legal self-defence.

According to a charge sheet, Breen, 41, destroyed a window and screen at McDonald's home in Lindsay, part of the city of Kawartha Lakes, in Ontario cottage country. Breen is charged with four counts, including break-and-enter and carrying a weapon — the crossbow — to commit an offence.
