Flight attendants overwhelmingly vote against Air Canada wage offer
Air Canada flight attendants overwhelmingly rejected the airline’s latest wage offer, with 99.1% voting against it, their union CUPE announced Saturday. The deal, reached after last month’s strike, included an 8–12% raise this year and smaller increases afterward, but CUPE said attendants would still earn below federal minimum wage. The issue has moved to mediation and possibly arbitration. Air Canada confirmed mediation is underway, while CUPE accused the federal government of interfering in negotiations and giving the airline leverage to keep wage hikes limited.

Missing Canadian soldier found dead in Latvia
A Canadian soldier who went missing while deployed in Latvia has been found dead, the Canadian Armed Forces said on Saturday.
Warrant Officer George Hohl was located deceased on Friday, three days after he was reported missing.
The CAF said it is supporting local Latvian authorities with an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hohl's death, but noted that "there is no indication this incident poses an increased threat to our deployed members' safety and security."
The CAF said Hohl served in the armed forces for almost 20 years, and he was a vehicle technician for a helicopter squadron based in Edmonton.
He was deployed on Operation Reassurance as part of the aviation battalion to NATO's multinational brigade in Latvia.
"The loss of Warrant Officer George Hohl has hit us all very hard," Gen. Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, said in a statement.
"On behalf of the entire Canadian Armed Forces, I offer my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues. Warrant Officer Hohl will be remembered for his many years of dedicated service, and our hearts are with all who knew him during this time of great sorrow."

WestJet plane from Toronto makes 'hard landing' in St. Maarten
A WestJet plane operating from Toronto made a "hard landing" at an airport in the Caribbean country of St. Maarten, the airline said on Sunday.
The airline said all passengers and crew were evacuated from WestJet flight 2276 after the plane arrived at Princess Juliana International Airport. The landing activated the plane's slides and emergency responders deployed foam as a precaution.
WestJet said there were no reported injuries.
"At this time, we are awaiting confirmation on the exact nature of the incident," WestJet said in a statement, noting it is co-operating with local authorities.
"Our teams are focused on supporting our guests and crew, ensuring their safety and care remain our highest priority."
The airport said on social media that there were 164 passengers on board. It said the plane did not catch fire and confirmed there were no injuries, but noted that three people were "taken for medical evaluation" as a precaution.

Federal agencies fumble privacy safeguards on asylum system revamp, risking refugee data
Three government agencies that partnered on a $68-million project to revamp Canada's asylum system failed to complete mandatory privacy safeguard tests for years while the project was being implemented, CBC News has learned. The lack of privacy protections raises "red flags," lawyers say, and may have put refugee claimants' data and applications at risk.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) worked together on the "asylum interoperability project," which would transform the asylum system into a more efficient digital one and address the ever-growing backlog of pending asylum applications, which currently sits at more than 290,000.

Lethbridge fire caused by spontaneous combustion of bark pile, mill owner says
A wildfire in Lethbridge, N.L., sparked by spontaneous combustion in a bark pile at Sexton Lumber, has forced partial evacuations as strong winds and dry conditions fueled its spread. Owner Kevin Sexton said the blaze, fed by about 100,000 tonnes of bark, is difficult to extinguish and resistant to water, requiring excavation and soaking. The fire, about one hectare in size, is contained with a firebreak, and officials say the mill is not currently at risk, though wind shifts could change that. Route 233 remains closed, schools shut down, and a reception centre has been moved to the Salvation Army Citadel in Musgravetown, with residents urged to register with the Red Cross. Fire crews, water bombers, and helicopters continue battling hot spots.

New Alberta school books order bans explicit images of sexual acts
Alberta's revised rules on books in schools will prohibit works containing explicit images of sexual acts, but not written descriptions of the same, according to a new ministerial order published Monday.
The original ministerial order, issued in July, asked school employees to remove library materials that depicted sexual acts, including a "written passage."
That prompted Edmonton Public Schools to assemble a list of 226 books to remove from shelves and classrooms, including well-known works such as The Handmaid's Tale, The Color Purple, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Godfather and Jaws.

Ontario mayor proposes clamping wheels of Quebec vehicles until parking fines paid
The mayor of Gananoque, Ont., has used new powers granted by the province to propose changing the town's parking bylaw to single out vehicles with Quebec licence plates by clamping their wheels until their owners pay parking tickets. John Beddows said the 27-point "mayoral directive" he issued under his recently acquired strong mayor powers is merely a draft document, meant as guidance for municipal staff as they plan the budget.
In an interview with CBC, Beddows said his purpose in including the point about vehicles from Quebec was to "have the idea explored," and dismissed pushback as a "tempest in a teapot."
