Ontario mayor proposes clamping wheels of Quebec vehicles until parking fines paid
The mayor of Gananoque, Ont., has used new powers granted by the province to propose changing the town's parking bylaw to single out vehicles with Quebec licence plates by clamping their wheels until their owners pay parking tickets. John Beddows said the 27-point "mayoral directive" he issued under his recently acquired strong mayor powers is merely a draft document, meant as guidance for municipal staff as they plan the budget.
In an interview with CBC, Beddows said his purpose in including the point about vehicles from Quebec was to "have the idea explored," and dismissed pushback as a "tempest in a teapot."

New analysis indicates higher lethality of avian flu at B.C. ostrich farm: CFIA vet
An affidavit by Canada's deputy chief veterinarian says new analysis has confirmed ostriches at a British Columbia farm that is fighting a cull order for its flock were sickened by a unique and more lethal strain of the avian influenza virus.
The affidavit by Cathy Furness with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says further investigation of samples taken from the birds revealed the "novel reassortment" of the virus has "enhanced the pathogenicity" of the strain.
It says the strain was "among the most virulent" tested at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory and even low doses killed mice within a few days.

More than 10,000 college support workers go on strike across Ontario
More than 10,000 full-time support workers from Ontario's 24 public colleges are going on strike starting Thursday in an effort to ensure job security, says the union.
The College Employer Council (CEC) "walked away from the [negotiation] table" after failing to respond since 4 p.m. Wednesday, said the support staff bargaining team from the Ontario Public Service Employees' Union (OPSEU). "If they think they can neglect their responsibility to bargain, it's time we remind them there is power in the union," said the OPSEU in an emailed statement.

More than 10,000 college support workers go on strike across Ontario
Over 10,000 support staff at Ontario’s 24 public colleges are on strike after contract talks with the College Employer Council collapsed. Represented by OPSEU, workers such as librarians, registrars, and tech staff are demanding job security and more funding, warning of mass layoffs and program cuts. The union blames Premier Doug Ford’s government for underfunding colleges, forcing reliance on international student tuition and privatized training. The strike, supported by 55+ community groups, will disrupt essential services across campuses, with picket lines forming despite threats against faculty who show solidarity.

Nahanni Fontaine apologizes for Instagram repost condemning Charlie Kirk on day after assassination
Manitoba Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine has apologized after reposting an Instagram message that harshly criticized U.S. activist Charlie Kirk the day after his assassination. The post, later deleted, called Kirk racist and hateful, sparking backlash. Fontaine admitted it was wrong, saying violence has no place in democracy and stressing the need for empathy. This marks her second apology in two months, following a July hot-mic incident involving a sign-language interpreter. Political analysts say her actions show poor judgment, overshadowed a major NDP announcement, and risk damaging Manitoba’s image and relations with the U.S.
