Nahanni Fontaine apologizes for Instagram repost condemning Charlie Kirk on day after assassination
Manitoba Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine has apologized after reposting an Instagram message that harshly criticized U.S. activist Charlie Kirk the day after his assassination. The post, later deleted, called Kirk racist and hateful, sparking backlash. Fontaine admitted it was wrong, saying violence has no place in democracy and stressing the need for empathy. This marks her second apology in two months, following a July hot-mic incident involving a sign-language interpreter. Political analysts say her actions show poor judgment, overshadowed a major NDP announcement, and risk damaging Manitobaโs image and relations with the U.S.

Court of Appeal rejects B.C. ostrich farm's latest bid to delay cull of birds due to avian flu
The Federal Court of Appeal has denied an application for another stay order to delay a cull of about 400 ostriches at a British Columbia farm that was hit by an outbreak of avian influenza, removing a legal block against the slaughter proceeding.
Katie Pasitney, the spokesperson for Universal Ostrich Farms, said Friday's ruling means an interim stay granted last weekend to give the farm in Edgewood, B.C., time to make legal submissions "no longer exists."
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) ordered the slaughter on Dec. 31, 2024, during an outbreak of H5N1 avian flu that killed 69 ostriches.

Don't ditch speed cameras, Ontario municipalities association urges Ford
The association representing Ontario's municipalities is urging Premier Doug Ford to reconsider his plan to get rid of automated speed cameras, saying it will put pedestrians at risk.
Ford reacted to news earlier this week that 17 automated speed cameras were cut down in Toronto over two nights, saying if municipalities don't ditch them, he will. The premier called the cameras a "cash grab," and suggested that "big huge signs" and "big flashing lights" would more effectively deter speeding.

Ontario's minimum wage will increase next month, but experts say it's still not enough
Minimum wage workers all over the province will get a pay bump next month. Ontario's minimum wage is set to increase from $17.20 to $17.60 an hour, starting Oct. 1. The adjustment amounts to an annual pay increase of $835 for minimum wage workers who work 40 hours per week, according to the province.
But Craig Pickthorne, director of communications for the Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN), told CBC Toronto that's still not enough.
"There is simply no place in the province where you can work full-time at a minimum wage job even after the increase," he said.

Calgary said it would crack down on noisy vehicles. It's given out 7 tickets so far
The City of Calgary started the summer with a plan to crack down on noisy vehicles that roar down residential and commercial streets like 17th Avenue, disrupting residents, patrons and pedestrians alike. To date, the city says seven tickets have been issued.
The city announced a crackdown on noisy vehicles in June, promising to fine drivers $270 above the legal noise limit. For Calgary drivers, that limit is 96 decibels. Tickets totalling $300 would be issued for failing to comply during a noise level test. The city says noise comes from loud exhausts and mufflers, excessive engine revving, squealing tires, loud stereos and amps, and prolonged car alarms.

Coffee with your car parts? Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons merge loyalty programs
Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons will launch a partnership next year allowing customers to link Triangle and Tims Rewards accounts to earn Canadian Tire money on eligible purchases, with exclusive perks to be announced closer to launch. The move expands Canadian Tireโs nearly 12-million-member Triangle program beyond its own brands and aligns with Tim Hortonsโ push to grow its rewards system. Experts say the collaboration strengthens engagement across everyday spending categories like coffee, gas, and household goods, but critics argue itโs more about brands competing for market share in an oversaturated loyalty space. While shoppers gain discounts, the bigger benefit for companies lies in collecting detailed consumer data to boost sales.
