Ontario's minimum wage will increase next month, but experts say it's still not enough

Minimum wage workers all over the province will get a pay bump next month. Ontario's minimum wage is set to increase from $17.20 to $17.60 an hour, starting Oct. 1. The adjustment amounts to an annual pay increase of $835 for minimum wage workers who work 40 hours per week, according to the province.

But Craig Pickthorne, director of communications for the Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN), told CBC Toronto that's still not enough.
"There is simply no place in the province where you can work full-time at a minimum wage job even after the increase," he said.

4 dead after float plane crashes south of St. Theresa Point First Nation: RCMP

A float plane crash near Makepeace Lake in northeastern Manitoba killed four passengers from St. Theresa Point First Nation — two couples with young children — while the 20-year-old pilot survived with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The plane, a de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver, was en route to traditional hunting grounds when it crashed on land instead of water. Police, search-and-rescue teams, and investigators remain at the scene, with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada probing the cause as the community mourns the sudden loss.

Calgary said it would crack down on noisy vehicles. It's given out 7 tickets so far

The City of Calgary started the summer with a plan to crack down on noisy vehicles that roar down residential and commercial streets like 17th Avenue, disrupting residents, patrons and pedestrians alike. To date, the city says seven tickets have been issued.

The city announced a crackdown on noisy vehicles in June, promising to fine drivers $270 above the legal noise limit. For Calgary drivers, that limit is 96 decibels. Tickets totalling $300 would be issued for failing to comply during a noise level test. The city says noise comes from loud exhausts and mufflers, excessive engine revving, squealing tires, loud stereos and amps, and prolonged car alarms.

Coffee with your car parts? Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons merge loyalty programs

Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons will launch a partnership next year allowing customers to link Triangle and Tims Rewards accounts to earn Canadian Tire money on eligible purchases, with exclusive perks to be announced closer to launch. The move expands Canadian Tire’s nearly 12-million-member Triangle program beyond its own brands and aligns with Tim Hortons’ push to grow its rewards system. Experts say the collaboration strengthens engagement across everyday spending categories like coffee, gas, and household goods, but critics argue it’s more about brands competing for market share in an oversaturated loyalty space. While shoppers gain discounts, the bigger benefit for companies lies in collecting detailed consumer data to boost sales.

Ontario pushes for stricter parking rules for daycares following deadly crash

Ontario's education minister is telling licensed daycare providers to immediately prevent the use of parking spaces directly adjacent to child-care facilities, after a toddler was killed when an SUV crashed into a daycare north of Toronto.

In a memo to daycares obtained by The Canadian Press, Paul Calandra — who first proposed the measures several days ago — says the goal is to "better safeguard" children and child-care providers. Calandra says all parking spaces that are adjacent to daycare entryways, playgrounds, windows and exterior walls of classrooms should be blocked off during hours of operation until additional safety measures are implemented.

Carney government to table first budget on Nov. 4

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government will table its first federal budget on Nov. 4, later than the originally signaled October date. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the budget will focus on finding “ambitious savings,” with plans to cut government operational spending by 7.5% in 2026-27, 10% the next year, and 15% by 2028-29. Despite these measures, Carney acknowledged the deficit will be larger than last year’s $61.9 billion, citing U.S. tariffs, NATO spending commitments, and a federal income tax cut as key drivers.

Authorities feared man arrested in smuggling scheme that led to deaths at border would flee: court documents

Authorities allege a man recently arrested in Ontario in connection with a human smuggling scheme dropped a family of four off near the Manitoba-U.S. border and told them to walk through blizzard conditions when their van got stuck in a remote, snow-covered area on the January 2022 night they froze to death.

Fenil Patel, who was living in Brampton, Ont., was arrested on Sept. 5 following an extradition request from the United States. The charges he's expected to face there include conspiracy to bring aliens to the U.S. resulting in death, court documents obtained by CBC News say.

The update comes nearly four years after the Patel family — no relation to Fenil Patel — died of hypothermia while attempting to cross illegally into Minnesota, near Emerson, Man.
