Sewage and fear linger in Richmound after cult compound raid, mayor says

Sewage water continues to seep into a large puddle near the entrance of a purple-coloured school-turned-compound that housed members of a cult in the southwest Saskatchewan village of Richmound for the last two years.

Although the "Kingdom of Canada" cult was driven out earlier this month after a police raid, village Mayor Brad Miller says the sewage water — overflow from the toilets and sinks inside the building — remains.

Canada Post Instructed to Undergo Major Transformation

The Canadian government has ordered Canada Post to begin sweeping changes to address its “existential crisis,” with over $5 billion in losses since 2018—including over $1 billion in 2024 and projections nearing $1.5 billion in 2025. Key reforms include phasing out door-to-door delivery for ~4 million addresses in favour of community mailboxes, lifting the moratorium on rural post office closures (nearly 4,000 locations), adjusting mail delivery standards to save operations costs, and speeding up how stamp rate changes are reviewed.

Ford says Ontario will ensure remaining Marineland beluga whales will get 'the best life possible'

Premier Doug Ford says Ontario will "do whatever it takes" to give the remaining 30 belugas at Marineland "the best life possible" as the Niagara Falls amusement park awaits word from Ottawa on whether it'll be allowed to export the whales.

Ford was speaking at a news conference Thursday on his plans to ban speed cameras when the issue of the possible exportation of the whales came up.

A federal official with knowledge of the situation previously confirmed to CBC News that the shuttered theme park applied to the government for export permits. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said Tuesday that its decision would "speak to the health of the whales." The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) said Thursday that a decision has not yet been made.

Ottawa's speed camera plan in flux after province vows to prohibit them

The City of Ottawa's plan to add two dozen more speed cameras this year is in question after the Ontario government pledged to prohibit the traffic-calming technology across the province.

On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford called speed cameras a "cash grab" and vowed to get rid of them, six years after the province agreed to allow them. "Enough is enough. In a few weeks, our government will introduce legislation to ban speed cameras in Ontario, to protect taxpayers and drivers and stop them from being gouged," Ford said. "We've seen municipalities across the province use municipal speed cameras as nothing more than a cash grab."

Alberta considers new law allowing it to ignore international agreements signed by Canada

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's government says it is planning to introduce legislation that would allow it to ignore international agreements signed by Ottawa.

The future legislation is listed in a new mandate letter Smith issued this week to the government's intergovernmental relations ministry, which the premier heads.

The letter says it's about protecting "Alberta's authority," and Smith's office added in a statement that it's also an issue of due process.

Canadian travellers, airlines, airports could be hit financially if pre-clearance into U.S. lost, says expert

Major airlines and airports, as well as both domestic and international  travellers, could face added costs if pre-clearance services are lost in Canada, says an aviation expert.

Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, said on Thursday that pre-clearance locations in Canadian airports are seeing declining numbers, as travel to the U.S. out of Canada slumps this year. The ambassador floated the idea that the U.S. may need to reassess offering the service. "We're not sure we can make the numbers work anymore … pre-clearance is something that is done at the expense of the U.S. government. We paid for it," Hoekstra said at the Global Business Forum in Banff, Alta.

Quebec government to mull possible ban on face coverings in public

Members of the CAQ, including at least one minister, have voted in favour of a proposal calling for a complete ban on face coverings in public spaces.

The original resolution, presented by the youth wing at the party's policy convention in Gatineau, Que. Saturday, called for stricter public security measures, including a ban on masked protests and on encampments in both public and private spaces. But an amendment presented by youth wing member Benjamin Archambault, and receiving slim majority support from the party's members, goes even further by calling for a complete ban on face coverings in public.
