How Vancouver students are healing after a major tragedy right in front of their school
After the deadly car attack at Vancouverβs Lapu-Lapu Day festival that killed 11 and injured dozens, John Oliver Secondary School students are creating a mural to reclaim the space and heal through art. Led by local artist Mar Cortez, the mural will feature symbols of Filipino culture, resilience, and community unity, including sampaguita blossoms and a phoenix rising from the ashes. Students, many of whom were directly affected, say painting has helped them process grief while celebrating pride and solidarity in the aftermath of tragedy.

The search for a missing six-year-old Alberta boy is now in its seventh day, with more than 200 searchers looking for Darius Macdougall in a forested area in the Crowsnest Pass.
"I want to stress that we are not scaling back the search," Alberta RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said during a Saturday media availability.
She said 60 officers with the RCMP Tactical Support Group have now joined the investigation, doing a "shoulder-to-shoulder search" to find Macdougall, or any sign of his whereabouts.

Quebec government to mull possible ban on face coverings in public
Members of the CAQ, including at least one minister, have voted in favour of a proposal calling for a complete ban on face coverings in public spaces.
The original resolution, presented by the youth wing at the party's policy convention in Gatineau, Que. Saturday, called for stricter public security measures, including a ban on masked protests and on encampments in both public and private spaces. But an amendment presented by youth wing member Benjamin Archambault, and receiving slim majority support from the party's members, goes even further by calling for a complete ban on face coverings in public.

Canada Post denies Ottawa's reforms give it leverage over striking union in negotiations
Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers remain locked in a nationwide strike after Ottawa ordered the postal service to end home delivery and close rural outlets as part of a cost-cutting plan to address a projected $1.5 billion loss in 2025. Canada Post says the reforms donβt give it leverage in talks but is revising its contract offer. The federal government has given the corporation 45 days to present a savings plan, with full transition to community mailboxes expected to take about a decade.

Union president not worried about Rio Tinto's low-carbon processing half a world away
As metals giant Rio Tinto kicks off a restructuring process at its Labrador City iron ore mine, the union president says he doesn't expect to be hit hard by the company's work to develop its low-carbon iron-making process halfway across the world.
Labrador is a major producer of iron ore and nickel, which are major components in steel manufacturing. The region is also known for the high-grade iron ore pellets it produces, which is considered less-carbon intensive in the steel-making process.

Alberta teacher strike likely as ATA members vote down tentative agreement
The Alberta Teachers' Association says a provincewide strike will begin on Oct. 6, after its members voted overwhelmingly against a recent tentative deal with the province.
The union represents 51,000 public, Catholic and francophone teachers. Of 43,362 votes cast, 89.5 per cent were opposed to the deal and 10.5 per cent supported it.
"I'm not surprised," ATA president Jason Schilling said at a news conference held in Edmonton Monday evening. "Teachers in this province have been asked to do more with less time and time again."

India-based Bishnoi gang now listed as terrorist entity in Canada
The federal government has listed the India-based Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization in Canada. The group was accused by the RCMP last year of orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation against Sikh activists in Canada. The new designation allows authorities to seize property and freeze accounts, and also bars Canadians from financing or aiding the group.
The move comes as Canada and India work to gradually re-establish trust in their diplomatic relations, after nearly two years of strain.
