N.S. man who used psychedelic tea in spiritual ceremonies sentenced
Michael Adzich, a 52-year-old Nova Scotia man, received a conditional discharge for importing and possessing ayahuasca for trafficking, meaning he will avoid a criminal record if he completes three years of probation. Justice Josh Arnold ruled that the discharge would not undermine public confidence. Adzich was charged after a 2022 RCMP raid on an ayahuasca ceremony at his home, which he led as part of spiritual and wellness practices. Supporters cheered the decision outside court.

What the jury did not hear at the Roderick Sutherland manslaughter trial
The 12 people on the jury for Roderick Sutherland's trial are deliberating their verdict.
He is the last of nine people who faced charges in connection with Megan Gallagher's murder on Sept. 20, 2020 β although he did not face trial for murder, but for manslaughter, unlawful confinement and offering an indignity to human remains. He pleaded not guilty.
Gallagher was murdered after being confined and assaulted in a Saskatoon garage. Her remains were found on the bank of South Saskatchewan River, about 105 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, near the village of St. Louis, on Sept. 29, 2022.

Canada Post labour dispute disrupts delivery of voter cards, mail-in ballots
Mail has slowly begun moving this week as the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) switches to rotating strikes β but itβs already too late for Canada Post to deliver voter cards and mail-in ballots for multiple upcoming elections across the country.
Provinces, territories and municipalities have scrambled to get voting details and documents out to residents through other means. But some experts say despite those efforts, the disruption could still lead to fewer people casting their ballots, since voter registration cards provide essential information during elections for which rules can be different and turnout already tends to be low.

Jury finds Roderick Sutherland guilty of manslaughter in death of Megan Gallagher
Roderick Sutherland has been found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the 2020 murder of Megan Gallagher.
A 12-person jury at Court of King's Bench in Saskatoon returned its verdict Friday afternoon, its second day of deliberations. Jurors also found Sutherland guilty on charges of unlawful confinement and offering an indignity to human remains.
Megan's family and friends sat in the front row and gasped, sobbed and hugged as the jurors delivered their verdict to Justice John Morrall.
Megan's father Brian Gallagher said outside court that when the jury foreperson read out the first verdict of "guilty," it felt like something was released from his chest.
"The first thought I had after they started to say 'guilty, guilty, guilty' was the grandparents have heard us, the Creator has heard us, and they are happy and smiling and I think at least, at ease," he said.

B.C. politicians hopeful after Ottawa promise of bail-reform bill
Mayors in B.C. cities, along with the province's attorney general, are hoping that a federal bill promised next week on bail reform will deliver the results they've been lobbying for. "Vancouver has been at the forefront of advocating for meaningful bail reform to keep violent reoffenders off our streets and restore confidence in our justice system," said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim in a statement reacting to the federal announcement.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said his Liberal government will introduce legislation next week to crack down on crime by bringing in harsher sentencing and making bail much harder to get.

Montrealers show up to support democracy at 'No Tyrants' protest
Montrealers gathered in Place du Canada on Saturday to send a pro-democracy message, in what was dubbed a "No Tyrants" demonstration.
It was one of many rallies taking place across North America, including in Washington D.C., as part of the wider "No Kings" movement in the United States.
The mass mobilizations are to protest the direction of the country under President Donald Trump, in what Republican party leaders are calling "Hate America" rallies.
Dave Hamelin-Schuilenburg was born and raised in Montreal but holds dual Canadian-American citizenship. He's chair of the Quebec chapter of Democrats Abroad β the group behind Saturday's protest in Montreal.
Speaking to the crowd, Hamelin-Schuilenburg thanked them not only for showing up, but for βstanding up.β
"Today isn't just about gathering. It's about showing that we care and that democracy still matters, that voices still matter, and that together we still matter," he said.

Prepare to wait in some Alberta municipalities as ballots counted by hand this election
It's likely to be a long night β and for many municipalities, long days β to tally election results in Alberta, thanks to the switch this year away from machines in favour of a hand count.
The province banned electronic vote tabulators in legislation passed last year, a change some cities warn will take longer, cost more, and increase the risk of spoiled ballots. "We have prepared significantly, we have increased the number of voting stations, we have increased the number of election workers," said Calgary chief returning officer Kate Martin.

B.C. premier ruling out new retaliatory action against U.S. softwood lumber tariffs
B.C. Premier David Eby said the province will not take new retaliatory actions against the U.S. over its additional 10% tariff on Canadian softwood lumber but will maintain existing countermeasures, including bans on U.S. alcohol in provincial liquor stores and U.S. firms in public contracts. Eby urged Ottawa to deliver immediate financial support for forestry workers, warning that job losses are already occurring. Industry leaders echoed concerns that small and medium-sized lumber businesses may not recover if the crisis continues.

Blue Jays jump to 4-0 lead over Mariners in Game 6
Torontoβs hopes of forcing a Game 7 are still alive as the Blue Jays lead the Seattle Mariners 4-0 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday.
The Jays were able to put runners on base in the bottom of the second thanks to some hits and sloppy fielding by the Mariners, with Addison Barger and Isiah Kiner-Falefa driving in runs on back-to-back singles.
In the following inning, the Jays doubled their lead thanks to a two-run homer by Barger to drive home Ernie Clement, who hit a triple.
