Girl found safe after Amber Alert, police now seek alleged abductor in fatal Brampton, Ont., shooting

A one-year-old girl has been found safe following an Amber Alert, but police say the man accused of abducting her is now wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Brampton, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police issued the alert around 5 p.m., but it was cancelled about two hours later.

"I can now confirm that the child has been located by police safe and sound," Const. Mandeep Khatra told reporters on Tuesday. "We believe the child was dropped off to family members."

Khatra declined to say where the child was located, but said the 38-year-old suspect who allegedly abducted her is now wanted in the fatal shooting of a woman earlier on Tuesday, he said.

Carney touted that his government is preparing to “build a stronger economy” against the backdrop of “a more dynamic, a more competitive, a more hostile world."

“If we don’t act now, the pressures will only grow,” he said in an address to university students in Ottawa on Wednesday night.

Back-to-work legislation to end Alberta teachers’ strike coming Monday, says premier

The Alberta government will table back-to-work legislation on Monday that seeks to end the provincewide teachers’ strike, Premier Danielle Smith said Thursday morning.

The government served formal notice Thursday that it would be introducing Bill 2, known as the Back to School Act, announcing it via an order paper published on the Alberta Legislature’s website.

“The precondition has to be getting kids back to school and so far, [the teachers’ union has] been unwilling to do that,” Smith said during a news conference. She added that, although it's still possible to reach an agreement by Monday, the government feels that's unlikely.

Ontario to pull ad that angered Trump on Monday, Ford says — after weekend's World Series games

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Ontario’s anti-tariff ad on social media, prompting Premier Doug Ford to announce he would pull the ad after it airs during the World Series weekend. The ad, which quoted former U.S. president Ronald Reagan to promote free trade, angered Trump, who responded by suspending all trade negotiations with Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada remains ready to resume talks whenever the U.S. is willing. Sources said Trump’s abrupt decision on Thursday night took Ottawa by surprise.

B.C. billionaire Ruby Liu loses court fight to take over Hudson's Bay properties

A B.C. billionaire who spent the summer fighting to move into former Hudson’s Bay properties found herself on the losing end of an Ontario Superior Court decision on Friday.

Judge Peter Osborne ruled that landlords for the collapsed retailer will not be forced to accept Ruby Liu as a tenant.

In his judgment, Osborne said he had “significant concerns” about Liu’s ability to meet the terms of the leases she wanted.

HBC declined to comment on his decision, while a spokesperson for Liu did not immediately respond to messages from The Canadian Press. Both parties have the ability to appeal the decision, though neither has announced plans to.
