What B.C.’s oil tanker ban is and why it matters
Canada’s Oil Tanker Moratorium Act (Bill C-48) legally bans oil tankers carrying more than 12,500 tonnes of crude and certain heavy oil products from docking, loading or unloading along northern British Columbia’s coast (from northern Vancouver Island up to the Alaska border) to protect the environment and coastal economies from catastrophic spills.
The ban has become a flashpoint in federal-provincial discussions over a proposed pipeline to the West Coast — Alberta and Ottawa have signalled they’re considering changes, but B.C. leaders and Coastal First Nations insist the moratorium must stay in place to safeguard fisheries, tourism and Indigenous rights.

Sask. man has one of the largest known collections of hockey books. It all started with a hockey draft
James Benesh, a Regina-based entrepreneur who sells and installs custom window coverings, has become a recognized hockey historian after his interest in researching an online hockey draft led him to build one of the largest private collections of hockey books. Now numbering about 1,200 titles, his collection is surpassed by only two others known to the Society for International Hockey Research, of which he is a member. Benesh says his collection was relatively small until about 2008, when it consisted of just a few dozen books, mostly family gifts, before expanding rapidly through his growing passion for hockey history.

Compher scores twice to counter 2-goal effort by top pick Kaltounkova as Sceptres edge Sirens
Jesse Compher netted her first two goals of the season, scoring late in the third period to help the Toronto Sceptres hold off New York 4-3 on Sunday, offsetting a two-goal effort by the Sirens' Kristyna Kaltounkova — the top pick in this year's draft.
Compher scored at 9:19 in the first to give the Sceptres' (3-0-1-2) a 1-0 lead, with assists from Allie Munroe and Maggie Connors. Compher made it 4-2 when she took a pass from Claire Dalton and scored with 1:37 left to play at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
It proved to be the winner after Taylor Girard scored 21 seconds later for the Sirens (2-0-0-5). It was the fourth goal for Girard, while Maddi Wheeler notched her fourth assist.

Ottawa offers over $35.5B for First Nations child welfare reform
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government is presenting a new plan worth more than $35.5 billion to keep First Nations children connected to their communities, culture and families.
The offer is less than the $47.8 billion presented by former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s government over 10 years, but it covers a shorter period of time and contains a key difference: a $4.4-billion annual commitment starting in 2033-34 after the initial $35.5 billion is spent.
Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty shared the details with CBC News before making the announcement in Ottawa on Monday — the day her government’s plan to reform the on-reserve child welfare system is due to be submitted at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

Saskatoon police shoot man during standoff triggered by mental health call
Saskatoon police shot a 25-year-old man during a 10-hour standoff at a Sutherland trailer park that began as a mental health call, according to Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). Police were responding to concerns about the man’s mental health and alleged threats, and negotiations continued for several hours before a confrontation late at night led an officer to fire multiple shots, wounding him. The man, who remains in hospital in stable condition, was later taken into custody after police entered the residence and used less-lethal devices. SIRT is now investigating police conduct during the incident, including the arrest and use of force.

Trump said he didn’t want Canadian cars — now one built in Windsor, Ont., is racking up big U.S. awards
It was just a few months ago that U.S. President Donald Trump told the world he doesn’t want Canadian cars.
But now, it’s a Canadian-built vehicle — a reborn North American muscle car — that’s been racking up U.S. awards.
That car, the gas-powered Dodge Charger Sixpack, started rolling off the line in Windsor, Ont., earlier this month. Since then, the new model has won TopGear’s U.S. car of the year and The Detroit News’ vehicle of the year.

Diageo’s Crown Royal plant in Amherstburg, Ont., listed for sale as closure looms
The Diageo-owned Amherstburg, Ontario facility that has bottled Crown Royal whisky since 1971 has been listed for sale ahead of its planned shutdown in early 2026. The most dangerous winter road in Ontario is not the 401. Here’s where it really is
More than half of Canada’s most dangerous winter roads are in Ontario, according to a new Samsara study based on fleet vehicle data from 2022–2025. Six of the top 10 hazardous routes are in the province, with Erieau Road near Lake Erie ranked the most dangerous nationwide due to narrow lanes and severe lake-effect snow. Other high-risk Ontario roads include Highway 17 (Kenora–Dryden), Highway 11 (Hearst–Kapuskasing), the QEW at the Burlington Skyway, and two sections of Highway 401. Weather, wildlife, and heavy urban traffic were key factors behind the elevated crash rates.

Mexico seizes Olympic medals, motorcycles in raids seemingly linked to hunt for Canadian fugitive Ryan Wedding
Mexican authorities say they've seized motorcycles, Olympic medals and drugs in a series of raids — a move seemingly linked to the hunt for Canadian fugitive Ryan Wedding.
The operation amounts to the most significant series of moves publicly acknowledged by Mexico that appear to be in connection with the manhunt for the alleged cartel-linked drug lord.
The government’s statement didn’t identify Wedding by name, but said the raids targeted a foreign former Olympian listed among U.S. authorities’ most wanted fugitives.
