Toronto house market statistics for month of October 2020.
Canada's debt-to-income ratio rose in 3Q, with mortgage borrowing reaching another record. According to Statistics Canada, the ratio of credit-market debt to after-tax income, on a seasonally-adjusted basis, climbed to 170.1% in 3Q after a sharp fall in the previous quarter. The ratio was in the 180% range prior to the pandemic arriving in North America in earnest. In 3Q, the stock of credit-market debt rose 1.6% while after-tax income fell 3.1%. The data agency notes that, in general, the rate tends to be higher for lower-income quintiles. Canadian real-estate activity has helped drive the recovery from the virus-induced decline. The Bank of Canada has identified elevated consumer debt as a potential vulnerability to financial stability.
