Micro carving from Airavateswarar Temple, Darasuram

Brihadeeswarar Temple at Tanjavur features large, monumental sculptures, matching the grand scale of the temple itself; many figures are massive and boldly carved, often several feet in height.

In contrast, Airavateswarar temple, Darasuram is famous for its miniature, highly intricate sculptures, where figures are much smaller, finer, and more delicate.

The sculptures at Brihadeeswarar emphasize power, volume, and grandeur, while those at Airavateswarar temple, Darasuram emphasize precision, detail, and craftsmanship on a smaller scale.

Brihadeeswarar impresses with size, while Airavateswarar temple, Darasuram impresses with detail, making the two Chola masterpieces complementary in style and scale.
