1,000-year-old Chola-era fresco paintings!

The first-floor circumambulatory passage of the Peruvudaiyar Kovil features rare 1,000-year-old Chola-era fresco paintings, hidden beneath later 17th-century Nayak murals.

The murals are located in a narrow, dark corridor (pradakshina path) on the first floor, running between the inner and outer walls of the sanctum sanctorum.

In 1931, history professor S.K. Govindasamy discovered the Chola paintings, which were covered by Nayak-era paintings.

Chola artisans used a fresco-secco technique, applying pigments onto a smooth, wet, lime-plastered surface, which created a durable, lasting layer.

One of its kind sculpture!

The Kola Kala Bhairavar is a distinct and rare form of God Bhairavar who can be seen ONLY in Airavateswarar temple, Darasuram.

While most Bhairava shrines depict the deity with a dog as a vahana, the Darasuram Kala Bhairava is notable for his fierce "Kola" (meaning "form" or "appearance")

He has 4 faces.
Flame on his head and there are 14 snakes on his body.
Like, Anklets on his legs and hands are snake,
Earrings are snake,
Yajñopavīta is a snake,
Udhirabandham on his hips is a snake.

This sculpture is made of black basalt stone!

The seven-tiered ராஜகோபுரம் of the Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple, Srimushnam rises majestically above the temple complex!

Built in the classic Dravidian style, the tower is adorned with tiers of sculpted figures and ornamental cornices.

Though the temple has two gateway towers, the western seven-tiered gopuram is the principal entrance used by devotees.

The tower reflects the architectural contributions of the Vijayanagara and Nayak periods, blending strength with artistic refinement.

Standing before it, one is struck not only by its height and beauty, but also by the spiritual aura it lends to the ancient temple.
