Who is the king of #SpeedChess ?
Dramatic ending for one of the most exciting match-ups of our time. Carlsen clinches the victory in a crazy final game with mutual chances right until the end. Sometimes he wins widely, others narrowly, but he almost never loses. As it is often said, chess is a simple game: two players sit at the board, and Magnus Carlsen wins.
Congratulations also to Hikaru, who once again proves himself as the undisputed challenger. In the end, they recognized it was a great fight, and both of them ended up smiling big. Hikaru made a gesture like "I almost got you!", and Magnus seemed to be assenting. Great sportsmanship from these two champions.
In the interview after the game, Magnus complained that he wasn’t feeling at his usual level. It is interesting that Magnus was not satisfied with the victory. In his own words, his goal wasn’t just to win but to “establish dominance” and “restore the pecking order when it comes to speed chess.” He was referring, of course, to his loss against Hikaru last year in this same event.
Magnus concluded that “there is history to be made” in the coming matches, regarding this quest for hegemony in fast time controls. And may I add, there is history to be made in chess as a whole, as the honorary title of greatest chess player ever is at striking distance for the Norwegian genius. Will Magnus give up on classical chess when he is so close to going down in history as the best ever?
Anyhow, we can only be grateful to live in a time when Magnus Carlsen is playing chess. It is like witnessing the best of all the historical greats in one person. If an evil scientist in an animated movie wanted to create a super-human chess player by combining the DNA of players from the past, he would probably come up with Magnus Carlsen.

Vishy Anand: "Hikaru plays so much better now (after his streaming success). It turns out what he wanted all this time was to be acknowledged.
Now that he is acknowledged, he is very very cool about it. He is exaggerating a bit when he says, Oh I am just a streamer. Now that he has this validation, he plays so much better. He is much more detached"
