At COP29 in Baku, countries reached a historic agreement to establish a global carbon market under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, aiming to accelerate emissions reduction efforts worldwide. The newly approved market provides two trading pathways for carbon offsets, allowing countries and companies to buy or sell carbon credits. This mechanism supports nations in meeting their climate action targets, known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs), by enabling them to offset emissions through verified reduction projects. The agreement, long delayed, marks a critical step toward more coordinated global climate action and reinforces commitments to limit global warming.
