A recent study by Bose Institute reveals that clouds over the Eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats carry toxic heavy metals like Cd, Cu, Zn, and Cr, transported from polluted lowlands via industrial and vehicular emissions. These clouds pose serious health risks, especially to children, through inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact. The Eastern Himalayas show 1.5 times higher pollution levels. Though India’s cloud water is still cleaner than that of China or the USA, the findings raise urgent environmental and health concerns.
The Krasheninnikov Volcano in Russia’s Far East erupts for the first time in over 450 years, sending ash six kilometres into the sky. Experts believe this may be linked to a recent powerful earthquake in the region. Another strong quake strikes near the Kuril Islands, prompting tsunami warnings in parts of Kamchatka. Although wave heights are low, authorities urge people to stay away from the shore. Scientists say both the eruption and quakes may be aftershocks of a massive earlier earthquake.
India is set to launch bio-fortified potatoes with the introduction of three nutrient-rich varieties : Kufri Chipsona-5, Kufri Bhaskar, and the purple-fleshed Kufri Jamunia developed by ICAR–CPRI. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of concerns over its recent definition of the Aravalli Hills and Ranges. Under the current definition, an Aravalli hill is a landform rising at least 100 metres above local relief, while an Aravalli range consists of two or more such hills within 500 metres of each other. The move follows criticism that the height-based criteria could exclude ecologically sensitive areas from protection.
