The Life Scientific at 10: What does it take to be a scientist?
BBC Radio 4
Success in science is often defined by making discoveries and publishing papers but, as the pandemic made clear, we also need scientists who can interact with decision makers in government and elsewhere. Do scientists need to learn new skills to participate in the decision making process? Do they (or at least some of them) need to be more outward looking, aware of the world beyond their laboratories and ready to engage? Or do the corridors of power need to open their doors to more people with a scientific training? Jim's guests are Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation, Prof Dame Ottoline Leyser; Nobel Prize winning biologist and Director of the Crick Institute, Prof Sir Paul Nurse; geologist and Royal Institution Christmas Lecturer, Prof Christopher Jackson; and forensic scientist and member of the House of Lords, Prof Dame Sue Black.

Jurnallarni turiga qarab nashryotlar taqriz uchun bir xaftadan bir oygacha vaqt beradi. Bu davr ichida maqolani sinchiklab o’qib ko’rasiz. Maqolalarga iqtiboslar to’g’ri keltirilganmi yo’qmi tekshirasiz. Olingan ilmiy natijalarni ahamiyatlilik darajasi qanday, jurnalga mosmi, sohani rivojiga hissa qo’shadimi yo’qmi bunga ham baho berasiz. Maqolada keltirilgan ma’lumotlar haqqoniyligiga amaliy baho berish qiyinroq lekin sohada tajribangiz yetarli bo’lsa boshqa maqolalar bilan solishtirib aniqlik kiritish mumkin. Grafiklar, jadvallar va rasmlar to’g’ri tahlil qilinganmi ya’ni ilmiy muammoni yechib bera olganmi? Maqolani ushbu asosiy jihatiga ham e’tibor berasiz. Taqrizni belgilangan muddatda jurnal interfeysiga kiritib jurnal muharrirlariga jo’natasiz. Ular esa maqola mualliflariga taqrizingizni jo’natadi va bir-ikki xafta oralig’ida mualliflar javob xatini tayyorlab muharrirga jo’natadi. Keyingi bosqichda muharrir javob xatini taqrizchiga yo’naltiradi. Shunday qilib mualliflar siz bergan taqrizga qoniqarli javob berganmi yo’qmi tekshirib chiqasiz. Agar javoblar qoniqarli bo’lsa maqolani chop etishga tavsiya qilasiz (Accept!). Aks holda maqolani qayta ishlash uchun yana mualliflarga beriladi yoki umuman rad etiladi (Reject!). Cancers jurnalidan kelgan bir maqolaga yozgan taqrizimni namuna sifatida joylamoqdaman. Taqriz ishlarida omad!!!
The review by Semmler et al. discusses the molecular level mechanisms of CAP on the selective killing of tumor cells leaving their counterpart less damaged. The review is well written and possible molecular level mechanisms of CAP effect on tumor cells also highlighted in detail. It can be considered for publication after addressing the following comments:
1) The errors (in lines: 86, 108, 152, 163, 173, 187, 211, 232, 249) related to the references have to be corrected in the manuscript.

2) The selectivity of CAP towards cancer cells is linked to the elevated level of intracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS or RONS) found in cancer cells compared to normal cells. These species cause nitro-oxidative stress in cells and may even lead to cell death. However, the precise action of RONS to cells still remains unknown. According to the literature (Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, 3(3), p.214) NO blocks the electron transport chain in mitochondria, thereby resulting in an increased level of intracellular ROS followed by triggering mitochondrial apoptosis. The permeation of CAP generated RONS including NO across the membrane was studied by MD simulations (Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 51(36), p.365203). The results show that the permeation probability of RNS through the membrane is higher than ROS. Thus, CAP generated RNS might also induce mitochondrial apoptosis, disrupting the cytochrome c function. This also might explain one of the molecular level mechanisms of induction of apoptosis in CAP treated tumor cells. Therefore, this mechanism should also be mentioned preferably in section 2 (or consider other more suitable sections), including both suggested references.
3) CAP generates both ROS and RNS and high levels of NO have been detected in blood of breast cancer patients and increased NOS activity (eNOS, iNOS) has been detected in invasive breast tumors compared to benign or normal breast tissue, independently of ER expression, suggesting a positive correlation between NO biosynthesis and degree of malignancy (Antioxidants Redox Signal., 26 (18), p.1044; DOI: 10.1016/j.niox.2019.03.002). Besides, NO acts as a “double‑edged sword” in tumor biology, playing an essential role either as an inducer of tumor progression or an inhibitor of tumor proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis (Trends in cancer, 3(9), p.659). The concentration dependent effect of NO in cancer is discussed in literature: (DOI: 10.1007/978-3-319-30705-3_15; DOI: 10.3389/fonc.2018.00272). I think the role of NO also needs to be discussed in the context of plasma cancer treatment, taking into account above mentioned literatures. This might be another explanation on the “positive” or “negative” effect of CAP on malignancies that authors indicated in section 2.
4) The tumor microenvironment (TME) also maintains one of the central roles in cancer development, progression and metastasis. The effect of CAP on TME is discussed in detail in literature: (Cancers, 11(12), p.1920). It would be better to add a couple of sentences about the role of TME in plasma cancer treatment referring to the paper.

Can we grow a conscious brain?
BBC World Service
In the two decades since stem cell research began, scientists have learned how to use these cells to create the myriad of cell types in our bodies, including those in our brains, offering researchers ways to study neurological injuries and neurodegenerative disorders. Some labs have actually started 3D printing stem cells into sections of brain tissue in order to study specific interactions in the brain. Human brain organoids offer another way to study brain development and diseases from autism to the Zika virus.
So, might stem cell research one day lead to a fully-grown human brain, or is that resolutely in the realm of science fiction? If something resembling our brains is on the horizon, is there any chance that it could actually become conscious? And how would we even know if it was?
