New York Plans Blockchain Center to Stake Claim as Industry Hub
It's Blockchain Week in the Big Apple, but if city leaders have their way, New York will become more than just a nice place for the industry to visit.
Announced Monday, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) is launching several initiatives to put the city on the map as a blockchain technology hub. Foremost among them is a plan to open a "Blockchain Center" that will both promote public awareness of the technology and facilitate conversations among industry stakeholders.
A key topic of the center's conversations will be making the regulatory environment more attractive to innovative businesses - which will inevitably mean examining New York State's BitLicense regulations, widely blamed for driving away startups since they took effect in 2015.

GoTenna Launches a Bitcoin Wallet That Works Without the Internet
If James Bond needed to use bitcoin on a secret mission in the jungle, he probably couldn't drop by a Starbucks to use the wifi.
Since internet connections aren't always available, reliable or private, cryptocurrency users need alternative ways to connect to the network. So the New York-based startup goTenna, founded in 2012 by Brazilian siblings Daniela and Jorge Perdomo, is partnering with Samourai Wallet to launch an Android app this summer that allows users to send bitcoin payments without an internet connection.
Announced Monday, the txTenna app will enable users to sync up their mobile with a goTenna device, which costs $179 per pair, then toggle the wallet app's settings to transact offline and send the bitcoin.

Founders of ICO Endorsed By Floyd Mayweather Indicted for Fraud
The three co-founders of cryptocurrency firm Centra Tech have all been indicted by a grand jury, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced Monday.
Raymond Trapani, Sohrab Sharma and Robert Farkas have all been accused of planning to defraud investors through their company's token sale. U.S. Attorney Robert Khuzami further announced that authorities had recovered more than $60 million in funds from the co-founders.
All three are being charged with counts of conspiracy and the commission of securities and wire fraud, according to a release.
Centra reportedly offered "cryptocurrency-related financial products," and its founders allegedly created "a scheme to induce victims to invest millions of dollars' worth of digital funds for the purpose of unregistered securities," according to the release.

Amazon’s New Partnership Is Another Step into Blockchain 👍🏻
Cloud computing company Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of an online retail giant Amazon, has partnered with a blockchain incubator ConsenSys to create the two firms' business blockchain cloud service, Kaleido.
Announced at the Consensus 2018 conference in New York on Tuesday, Kaleido is aiming to give AWS customers an "easy button" to get into blockchain without a lot of background knowledge. “They can focus on their scenario and they don't have to become PhDs is cryptography, we give them a simple platform to build their company on blockchain,” said Steve Cerveny, one of the founders of Kaleido, CNBC reports.
Matt Yanchyshyn, the global technical lead for AWS' partner program, told CoinDesk, “We have been following Ethereum closely as it's what many of our customers have been exploring, especially for enterprise use cases,” although he stresses that AWS is “protocol-agnostic,” as the company also supports Hyperledger's Sawtooth and R3's Corda platforms.

Circle Raises USD 110 Million for Dollar-Backed Token
Goldman Sachs-backed cryptocurrency startup Circle has raised USD 110 million in a now-closed fundraising round led by mining hardware manufacturer Bitmain, Reuters reported. The two companies have partnered up to create a token backed by US dollars, while this investment brings Circle’s valuation to nearly USD 3 billion - sixfold what it was in 2016.
The creation of the token, called the Circle USD Coin (USDC), is set to begin this summer. It will be an ERC-20 token based on the Ethereum network. It is supposed to enable businesses and consumers to transfer value more efficiently, as the volatility of other cryptocurrencies prevents that, Circle believes. In their opinion, a cryptocurrency whose value is pegged to a stable traditional currency can help drive adoption of blockchain-based systems.

The Jimmy Song-Joe Lubin 'Bet' Probably Won’t Go Ahead
On Monday, two prominent crypto figures infamously struck up a little wager. Joseph Lubin – the founder of Ethereum "production studio" ConsenSys – bet that there will be mainstream adoption of a blockchain-based platform within five years. His bet was picked up by Bitcoin Core developer and a partner at Blockchain Capital, a venture capital company, Jimmy Song who believes that the use of blockchains will remain restricted to cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.
However, as excited as some of us may be at the prospect one of these figures handing over a fortune in bitcoin to the other, there’s a very good chance the bet may not go ahead. On the one hand, an analysis of the discussion leading up to it suggests that agreement on terms will prove highly fraught. On the other, recent tweets from Song already hint that he may be backing away from his initial bullishness.

Bitcoin and Altcoins Under Pressure Despite Consensus 2018
The Consensus 2018, the largest conference in the crypto world, ended yesterday and many investors and traders are disappointed. Many experts estimated that the conference in New York could spark a much needed rally in bitcoin. However, there was no major upward move in bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies.
According to Tom Lee, managing partner at Fundstrat Global Advisors, the prior Consensus rallies have yielded gains between 10% and 70%. Before the conference, he expected the Consensus rally to be even larger this year as "attendance this year is up dramatically and it’s coming at a time when Bitcoin/Crypto is down YTD year-to-date."
Instead, bitcoin, ethereum, ripple and bitcoin cash were seen trading with a negative bias. A few probable reasons for no bullish strength could be lack of volumes, over diversification by investors in small cap coins for quick returns, and low liquidity.

China Ranks Cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin is Not in Top 10
The China Center for Information Industry Development (CCID), a research unit under the country’s industrial ministry, just officially launched its monthly ratings index on 28 coins and their technology. The country’s residents are still banned from trading cryptocurrencies, though.
The index is based on three criteria: technology, application, and innovation. However, the CCID did not publish their methodology. What they did publish was the list - and Ethereum came first, while Bitcoin was only 13th.

Venture Capitalists Teach Buffett How to Value Bitcoin
Warren Buffett, the legendary stock investor and long-time bitcoin skeptic, reignited the discussion how to best value bitcoin and other cryptoassets.
Many attempts have been made to apply valuation formulas from the world of traditional finance onto cryptoassets, but most of these attempts have failed when it comes to understanding the real value drivers behind this new class of digital assets.
In a recent interview with Yahoo Finance, Buffet argued that bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies could not be considered “investments” since they do not “produce anything.”
According to the Prophet of Omaha, traditional investments like “a farm, apartment house, or an interest in a business” can be expected to deliver a return by itself, which is what makes it an investment per definition.

McAfee Accused of Promoting Copycat ICO
Self proclaimed “crypto visionary” and software tycoon John McAfee is known for promoting initial coin offerings (ICOs) for a hefty fee. However, whether McAfee is doing his own research before endorsing a project has most recently been brought into question on Twitter, where one of promoted ICOs seemed to be copying another project.
Most recently, McAfee tweeted his support for the so-called Pink Taxi

Chinese "Damas" Wade Into Blockchain
With their silly dances to high-volume music in public squares, community centers or just on street corners across China, they are easy to spot and seem harmless. But the global financial market and the Chinese real estate market have learned tough lessons: Chinese damas are a force to be reckoned with.
For those of you who are confused, the Chinese word dama typically refers to married middle-aged Chinese women with grown-up children. Although it used to be a more honorable term, the word is used somewhat derogatory today thanks in large part to a well-known incident in 2013 when the gold market plunged, and Chinese middle-aged women rushed to jewelry shops all over the country to buy up everything they could of the precious metal, driving up global gold prices as a result.

Ver Claims BCH Adopted Faster than BTC - Is It?
Roger Ver’s praise for Bitcoin Cash and his obvious distaste for the original Bitcoin - which he calls Bitcoin Core - is nothing new, as he seems like the only one fighting some kind of war against Bitcoin. However, his claims are sometimes considered outlandish with a reason.
Most recently, the creator of bitcoin.com and one of the first investors of Bitcoin, told CNBC that, “Cryptocurrency users and developers around the world are adopting Bitcoin Cash at faster rates than Bitcoin Core.” He gave no further evidence or details to back this claim.

The Holy Grail of Digital Identity Is Not Entirely Sovereign
In April, an American tech company IBM joined a little-known not-for-profit alliance called the Sovrin Foundation. Why is this significant? Well, because they are building its own purpose-built blockchain, which it will use to enable 'self-sovereign identity.'
Self-sovereign identity (SSI) has recently become the holy grail of concepts when it comes to digital identity and data privacy. It describes a state in which people can own the digital information that identifies them and choose when and when not to share it, without having to rely on a third party (e.g. online social networks, businesses or governments).

Former UK Visa CEO Takes Helm of Crypto Consumer Payment Startup
The former head of Visa in the UK and Ireland has joined a startup bringing crypto to consumer payments, Business Insider NL reports today, May 19.
Marc O’Brien, who worked for Visa between 2008 and 2014, has recently joined crypto consumer payment startup Crypterium, which aims to make it possible to spend crypto in everyday situations, Business Insider reports. Speaking on the importance of crypto adoption as a medium of exchange, O’Brien told Business Insider:
“The idea is that cryptocurrency is actually quite difficult today to use as an everyday method of payment. If you were to go to an exchange with your Bitcoin or your Ether it would probably take you 3 to 7 days to get that money paid out into a normal bank account. What Crypterium will do is make that whole process seamless and give an opportunity for a consumer to actually use their cryptocurrency to pay for everyday items.”

Middle East Currency Crisis is Driving People into buying Bitcoin at Record Rates

The Blockchain Revolution is real and taking over all over the Middle East from UAE to Turkey. These customers are moving vast sums of into Crypto even as governments continue to ban them, but they are not moving into Crypto for investment reasons like China or the U.S. but because of fear of holding onto devaluing local currencies.

Are Ripple Helping Amazon With Cross Border Payments?
We have seen a video surface over the weekend that shows a member of the Ripple Labs team, referring to some issues faced by Amazon with regards to cross border payments, namely, payments between merchants on Amazon. A key part of Ripples service is of course the facilitation of fast, cheap and instant international payments, which means companies can people people all over the world without the need to establish local bank accounts etc.
The video in question (see attached tweet), shows Ashleesh Birla, SVP of product at Ripple Labs stating that:
"This was a case of Amazon paying merchants and taking weeks for cross border payments to arrive.”

Bank of England Issues Working Paper on Central Bank Digital Currencies
On May 18, the Bank of England released a staff working paper, laying out various scenarios of possible risks and financial stability issues of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
The paper constructs three models of CBDC depending on the sectors that have access to CBDC, from a narrow CBDC where access is limited to banks and non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), to direct and indirect access extended to households and non-financial firms.
The Financial Institutions Access model is limited to banks and NBFIs, where financial institutions can interact directly with the central bank to purchase and sell CBDC in exchange for eligible securities. Financial institutions are not supposed to provide an asset to households and firms, which are entirely backed by central bank money.

Crypto Will Be Flying High In 6 Months Time
Yesterday, we saw some reports that stated Bitcoin could reach $20,000.00 in just 6 months time. As we know $20,000.00 marks an ultimate goal for Bitcoin. Granted, for many this is just a starting point, with many investors believing Bitcoin is worth far more than that, overall though, we believe $20,000.00 offers a strong target, for Bitcoin, for now at least.
What we are saying here is, let’s take this a few small steps at a time.
