Hey folks!

I've been getting a lot of DMs for guidance, so decided to take action on it.

I'm excited to help folks out and give back to the community via Topmate. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or just want to say hi!

πŸ”₯ Dynamic Programming (DP)

Dynamic Programming is one of the most important and slightly advanced topics in coding interviews.

πŸ“Œ What is Dynamic Programming?

Dynamic Programming is a technique used to solve complex problems by breaking them into smaller subproblems and storing their results.

πŸ‘‰ Instead of solving the same problem again and again, we reuse previously computed results.

🧠 Why DP is Needed?

Some problems have:
β€’ Overlapping subproblems (same calculation repeated)
β€’ Optimal substructure (solution built from smaller solutions)

DP helps to:
β€’ reduce time complexity
β€’ avoid redundant calculations

βš™οΈ Two Approaches in DP

1️⃣ Memoization (Top-Down)
Uses recursion
Stores results in memory (cache)
Avoids repeated calculations

πŸ‘‰ Think: solve first, store later

2️⃣ Tabulation (Bottom-Up)
Uses iteration
Builds solution step by step
No recursion

πŸ‘‰ Think: build from smallest to largest

πŸ” Example Concept: Fibonacci

Normal recursion:
Repeats same calculations β†’ slow

Dynamic Programming:
Store results β†’ faster

πŸ‘‰ This reduces complexity from O(2ⁿ) to O(n)

🧠 Key DP Patterns

1️⃣ 1D DP
Example:
β€’ Fibonacci
β€’ Climbing stairs

2️⃣ 2D DP
Example:
β€’ Grid problems
β€’ Longest Common Subsequence

3️⃣ Knapsack Pattern
Example:
β€’ Max value with limited weight

4️⃣ Subsequence Problems
Example:
β€’ Longest Increasing Subsequence

⚑️ When to Use DP

Look for:
β€’ Repeated subproblems
β€’ Need for optimization
β€’ Recursive solution possible
β€’ β€œFind maximum/minimum ways”

⚠️ Common Mistakes

❌ Not identifying overlapping subproblems
❌ Using recursion without memoization
❌ Wrong state definition
❌ Not understanding transitions

🎯 Interview Questions

β€’ What is Dynamic Programming?
β€’ Difference between DP and recursion
β€’ Memoization vs Tabulation
β€’ Fibonacci using DP
β€’ Knapsack problem
β€’ Longest Common Subsequence

⭐️The Main Point:
DP is not about memorizing problems.
It’s about identifying patterns like:

πŸ‘‰ β€œCan I reuse previous results?”

πŸ’‘ Simple Thought Process

1. Can I break problem into smaller parts?
2. Are subproblems repeating?
3. Can I store results?

πŸ‘‰ If yes β†’ Use DP
