En av de minnesbilder som jag berättade på Leif stora fest häromdan handlar om hans insatser för att förhindra en bankkrasch. Året var 1992. Då hade ”den enda vägens” politik brutit samman. Riksbanken hade höjt räntan till 500 procent. Det var stor kris. Statsminister Carl Bilt var tvungen att vända sig till oppositionen för att få hjälp. Ett veckoslut av förhandlingar mellan Carl Bildt och oppositionsledaren Ingvar Carlsson om en ny ekonomisk politik skulle förberedas. Leif Pagrotsky var en av dem som förberedde.

Lauri Allan Törni, later known as Larry Thorne, served under three flags during his extraordinary military career: Finland, Germany and the United States.
A decorated Finnish officer, he commanded the famous Detachment Törni against Soviet forces during the Second World War. He also received training with the W*ffen-$$ in 1941 and returned to German service in 1945.
After the war, he was convicted of treason in Finland but eventually pardoned. He later emigrated to America and enlisted in the US Army in 1954.
Thorne became a Green Beret, serving in Vietnam with US Special Forces.
In October 1965, he disappeared when his helicopter crashed during a covert mission in Vietnam.
His remains were recovered in 1999 and buried at Arlington National Cemetery in 2003.

Yesterday, I emphasized PRESERVE. Today, I want to call attention to another word in the presidential oath: PROTECT.
The federal oath under 5 U.S.C. § 3331 requires those covered by it to SUPPORT AND DEFEND our Constitution. The presidential oath expressly includes the obligation to PRESERVE and PROTECT it as well.
To PROTECT requires vigilance. It requires recognizing threats to our constitutional freedoms and taking lawful action before those freedoms are lost. It demands judgment, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the limits our Constitution places on government power.
I pray our leaders understand the responsibility they have accepted. Their decisions reach beyond their time in office. Our children and grandchildren will live with the consequences.
