South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA)

It is the near-Earth region where the Earth's magnetic field is weakest relative to an idealized Earth-centered dipole field.

It is an area where the Earth's inner Van Allen Radiation Belt comes closest to the Earth's surface, dipping down to an altitude of 200 KM.

This leads to an increased flux of energetic particles in this region and exposes orbiting satellites to higher-than-usual levels of radiation.

The effect is caused by the non-concentricity of the Earth and its magnetic dipole.

Flavonoids

1. group of phytonutrients present in almost all vegetables and fruits.

2. They are responsible for the varied colours of fruits and vegetables.

Health benefits
1.good antioxidants,
2.anti-inflammatory properties,
3. Boosts immune system.

News

Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV)

- Recently, DRDO) successfully flight tested it
- HSTDV is an unmanned scramjet demonstration aircraft that can travel at hypersonic speed.
- It uses hypersonic air-breathing scramjet technology.
- velocity of six times the speed of sound i.e. Mach 6.

Air Breathing Engine

- It uses oxygen from the atmosphere in the combustion of fuel.
- They include the turbojet, turboprop, ramjet, and pulse-jet.
- This system is lighter, efficient and cost-effective than other systems in use.

Types of Air Breathing engines

Ramjet:
- uses the vehicle’s forward motion to compress incoming air for combustion without a rotating compressor.
- work most efficiently at supersonic speeds but not at hypersonic speeds.

Scramjet
- It is an improvement over the ramjet engine as it efficiently operates at hypersonic speeds and allows supersonic combustion.

Dual Mode Ramjet (DMRJ)
- It is a type of jet engine where a ramjet transforms into a scramjet over Mach 4-8 range.
- It can efficiently operate both in subsonic and supersonic combustion modes.

Chandra X-ray Project

- launched by Space Shuttle Columbia in 1999.
- part of NASA's fleet of "Great Observatories" along with the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope.

- The telescope is named after the Nobel Prize-winning Indian astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.

- Chandrasekhar limit is the theoretical maximum mass a white dwarf star can have and still remain a white dwarf.

Avian Botulism

- It is a neuro-muscular illness caused by Botulinum (natural toxin) that is produced by bacteria, Clostridium botulinum.

- The bacteria is commonly found in the soil, rivers, and seawater. It affects both humans and animals.

- The illness affects the nervous system of birds, leading to paralysis in their legs and wings.

Fast Radio Burst in Milky Way

News: Recently NASA has spotted fast Radio Burst for the first time in the Milky Way

FRB is bright bursts of radio waves whose durations lie in the millisecond-scale.

It was first discovered in 2007.

NASA observed a mix of X-ray and radio signals.

The findings confirm that magnetars could be sources for FRBs.

Black Fungus

- Also called as Mucormycosis or zygomycosis.
- It is a serious but rare fungal infection.
- Caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes which exist in the environment.

- It mainly affects people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness.

- The symptoms are face numbness, one-side nose obstructions or swelling of eyes, or pain.

Early detection and treatment can help.

Vitamin D

- It is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that it dissolves in fats and oils and can be stored in your body for a long time.

- It is produced when sunlight (or artificial light, particularly in the ultraviolet region of 190-400 nm wavelength) falls on the skin and triggers a chemical reaction to a cholesterol-based molecule, and converts it into calcidiol in the liver and into calcitriol in the kidney.
