The Spinning Devotees Festival

A long, long time ago in a land called Bengal (in India), there were people who worked very hard, like farmers and helpers. These people were not treated very nicely by others who thought they were more important.

But every spring, when the plants were ready to grow again and the year was ending, these hardworking people threw a big party called
Gajan. It was like a birthday for the Earth, celebrating life starting fresh again!

Now, in this festival, some brave people did very intense things to show their love and strength. Some danced with fire, jumped through it, or even swung around by hooks on their skin! It sounds scary, but for them, it was a powerful way to feel proud, strong, and closer to their gods.

Here’s something special: usually in India, the β€œimportant” priests (called Brahmins) do the religious stuff. But not at this party! At Gajan, the regular village people, the ones who weren’t treated as important, were in charge. They were the stars of the show. They led the prayers, the dancing, and all the fire-swinging fun.

By doing this festival, they were saying: β€œWe matter too!” It helped them feel strong, happy, and proud of who they are. They weren’t just doing it for funβ€”they were showing the world their identity and their power through these magical and meaningful rituals.
