Boo! Did I scare you? If you enjoy that feeling, there's a scientific reason why! π»π π
Last Sunday on our ESC NN (English Speaking Club in Nizhny Novgorod) meeting we talked about fears and discussed why some people might enjoy being spooked while others are terrified of it.
Turns out, our love for a good scare isn't just for kicks. Psychologists found that horror movies are like a playground for our brains, letting us safely practice dealing with fear and uncertainty. Horror fans even showed more resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic!
Itβs not just for adults, eitherβthis βrecreational fearβ is a nearly universal part of childhood, helping us learn to regulate emotions. So, what's that thrill you feel? Itβs your brain rewarding you for facing your fears in a controlled way.π
Reply with the emoji "Which camp are you?":
π± Love horror!
π Can't handle it!

How do you define yourself? π
This Sunday we'll go into the psychology (my favorite thing to talk about :)) and not just the science itself but the psychology of us vs. them - we're wired to associate ourselves with "our" kind of people for survival, but we don't discuss this topic enough, I think! Well, why not do it this Sunday??!?!
Here's a note from Nelly:

Here's a note from Nelly:
Where do you belong to? Do you define yourself as a family member, a worker, a hobbyist, a fan, an opinion-haver? Despite being older than humans themselves, tribalism (us vs them; friend vs foe dichotomy) still has an effect on us and society that is hard to overestimate. Does giving labels make the world easier to understand or does it strip the world of nuance? Can this ancient defensive mechanism be used against us?
