A Black Swan event is an extremely rare event that is unpredictable and has severe consequences. The term was popularized by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his book, The Black Swan.

The idea behind the Black Swan theory is that we often underestimate the potential for the unexpected things.
We tend to focus on what is likely to happen, and we neglect the possibility of events that are outside of our normal expectations.
