One step closer to Fedora 3️⃣4️⃣!

Today, the Fedora rawhide branch (our rolling-release branch) was forked for Fedora 34. The next major milestone will be the Fedora 34 Beta release.

https://twitter.com/FunnelFiasco/status/1359136326013116416
Fun fact: Fedora 34 and Rawhide will soon ship exFAT filesystem utilities by default on new installations.

It may seem simple, but this is a landmark moment in Fedora, since Microsoft opened their patent for the exFAT filesystem a few years ago. For the first time ever, Fedora is legally able to offer exFAT support to users. It is not clear if exFAT will be an option in the Anaconda installer, but exFAT media will work out-of-the-box on new Fedora 34 installs.

For me, though? I'm sticking with Btrfs. 😉
Fedora i3 fans: Yesterday the Fedora i3 SIG (odilhao specifically) submitted the Fedora i3 kickstarts to the fedora-kickstarts compose repository. Once this is merged, the Fedora i3 Spin ISOs are expected for the Fedora 34 Beta.

More details about the kickstart Pull Request.

P.S. – Too eager to wait for Beta? You can find nightly builds of Fedora 34 target deliverables. Note, these are NOT official and NOT fully tested. Test out nightly ISOs in a Virtual Machine, but avoid running on bare-metal until Beta.
This month, the Fedora Packager Dashboard left the testing period and is available for wide use. Why should you care about it? And what is it about?

https://packager-dashboard.fedoraproject.org/

Fedora Packager Dashboard is a web application designed to make the lives of Fedora Packagers easier. It aggregates and shows all the relevant data for package maintainers on one page, structured, searchable and filterable. You’ll see things like current bug reports, updates, issues regarding all your packages at one place, without needing to spend time reading your emails and/or monitoring dozens of different services one by one. Caring about your packages will be easier and less time-consuming with Fedora Packager Dashboard.

The Fedora Respins SIG is pleased to announce the latest release of Updated F33-20210301-Live ISOs, carrying the 5.10.18-200 kernel. As always our isos can be found at http://tinyurl.com/Live-respins2
Telegram Desktop will no longer be packaged for RPM Fusion because of hostile behavior by Telegram upstream developers to downstream Linux packagers. If you use Telegram Desktop on Fedora, consider transitioning to the Flatpak.

NOTE: The package may be picked up by another RPM Fusion maintainer. It is not yet clear. But the current maintainer is dropping the package. The situation is still unfolding. Follow the linked mailing list thread for the latest news and updates.

Fedora is a community; Fedora Linux is our OS
From the desk of the Fedora Project Leader
———

When I talk about the Fedora Project, I’m talking about you: the community. The Linux distribution we make is great, but the community is the key. When people say “Fedora” without a qualifier, I’d like them to think “Fedora Project”, not the bits we produce. What’s more, we make more than just one thing — EPEL, for example, plus artwork, documentation, websites, and tools which aren’t tightly tied to the OS itself.

[…]

To be clear, this isn’t a “well, actually” interjection thing. If someone says the “wrong” thing, let’s not make a habit of correcting. Old habits can take time to correct. We don’t need to solve this in one day. Instead, let’s build this habit by example in our official communications and publications.

"Top 5 #Linux server distros – and how to pick the right one for your organization"

If you're reading this message, you can probably take a guess at which distro featured in Network World's top picks of Linux distros tailored for server use cases. 😎

Fedora seeks to update Default Content License to CC BY-SA 4.0 International.
From CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported.

The Fedora Council is currently considering a motion from the Fedora Project Leader to update the Default Content License in the Fedora Project Contributor Agreement. The motion seeks to update Fedora content (like official documentation, wiki pages, Fedora Magazine articles, and more) to the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. What does this mean? ❓❔

For the average person, not much. But it does make it friendlier to re-use or modify Fedora Community content in international contexts beyond the United States, as long as you use the same license that the content was shared with you (the Creative Commons license!). 📝

The Default Content Licenses in Fedora are one of the creative ways Fedora contributors "own" our contributions. There are no Contributor License Agreements (CLAs) to sign. You don't give up your copyright. The contributions are entrusted to the wider community. 💪

The Fedora Project Contributor Agreement, or FPCA, is *not* a copyright assignment agreement! 🥳

This concludes your Fedora Linux Legal & Policy update! 😉

Nest with Fedora: 2021 Edition
Fedora announces plans for a virtual conference in 2021.

Hello Fedora Friends! Phew, it’s been over a year of living with COVID and everything that has gone with it. Although living in a pandemic has been stressful (to say the least), Fedora has thrived through this time, and we have been connecting more than ever. So it is with mixed emotions that I am announcing that our yearly contributor conference will be virtual: Nest with Fedora 2021 edition.

Although I will sorely miss the time spent with Friends, there are a lot of benefits to virtual events. At Flock to Fedora we are usually able to accommodate around 180-200 people(based on budget). At Nest with Fedora we had almost 500 attendees. The F33 Release Party had more than 170 attendees. We had a virtual Fedora Women’s Day and we also can’t forget the impromptu New Year’s Eve Party! Matthew Miller, Fedora Project Leader, and I have been running a weekly virtual social hour.

The Fedora community has been incredibly active. We have seen new contributors popping up left and right with inspiring enthusiasm. I believe that a big part of the reason we are seeing an influx of new contributors is all of the virtual events that Fedora has put on in the last year. New contributors to Fedora are crucial to sustaining the health of the community, and we value all contributions (small or large, coding or not!). If you see new folks in your Fedora hangouts, make sure to welcome them and point them in the right direction.

How to participate

We had an amazing conference last year. I will work to incorporate the feedback we received to make Nest even better this year. Look out for a Call for Papers and Registration in the upcoming months. If your organization is interested in sponsoring Fedora’s contributor conference this year, feel free to reach out to flock-info@fedoraproject.org.

Fedora Infrastructure is getting a new accounts system! To put this in place we will need an outage to our services.

There will be an outage starting at 2021-03-25 10:30UTC, which will last approximately TWO days. To convert UTC to your local time, take a look at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/UTCHowto or run:

date -d '2021-03-25 10:30UTC'

Affected Services: All Fedora Services

As this is the authentication system there may be issues logging in to some services. Users may not be able to access people.fedoraproject.org or secondary.fedoraproject.org during the outage. Maintainer test instances are a special case and as such will be in a “frozen” state for access after the outage. This means that no updates will be made to users or ssh keys on these machines.
