Canara Bank Shares Tumble 7% Following Q2 Earnings as Profit-Booking and Weak Treasury Income Weigh

Category: Markets

Shares of state-run Canara Bank experienced intense selling pressure on Thursday, dropping nearly 7% to touch an intraday low of ₹116.71 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The sharp slide followed a 3.87% rally in the previous session when the bank unveiled its financial results for the second quarter (Q2).

The counter emerged as the primary drag on the Nifty PSU Bank index, which slipped 2.2%, contrasting with the benchmark Nifty 50 which traded higher. Over 21 million shares changed hands within the opening half-hour of trading, making it one of the most heavily traded counters on the exchange.

Mixed Earnings Profile Triggers Profit-Taking

Market participants pointed to profit-booking after Wednesday’s intraday surge of over 5%, coupled with lingering concerns over non-interest revenue.

Although headline numbers showed resilient core performance, non-interest income declined 18.2% year-on-year to ₹5,772 crore. The downturn was largely driven by a 68.5% year-on-year plunge in treasury income to ₹499 crore, compared to ₹1,583 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal, as hardening bond yields took a toll. Consequently, profit on the sale of investments dropped 87.4% to ₹153 crore from ₹1,217 crore.

This drop in other income capped operating profit before provisions and contingencies at ₹8,758 crore, reflecting an increase of just 2% year-on-year from ₹8,588 crore.

Headline Financial Metrics at a Glance

Despite the market reaction, the public sector lender delivered improvement in credit growth and core operating profitability:

• Net Profit: Rose 8.4% year-on-year to ₹5,175 crore compared to ₹4,774 crore in the year-ago period.

• Net Interest Income (NII): Jumped 20.4% year-on-year to ₹11,005 crore, supported by net interest margin (NIM) expansion to 2.53%.

• Balance Sheet Expansion: Global deposits grew 13.13% year-on-year to ₹16,97,305 crore, while global gross advances surged 19.46% to ₹13,75,060 crore.

• Provisions: Total provisions and contingencies fell 6.1% year-on-year to ₹3,583 crore, with bad loan provisions declining to ₹1,339 crore from ₹1,504 crore.

Asset Quality and Brokerage View

The bank’s asset quality parameters showed sustained improvement during the quarter. Gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) improved significantly, contracting by 102 basis points year-on-year to 1.33% of gross advances from 2.35% a year earlier. Net NPAs dropped to 0.30% compared with 0.54% at the end of September last year....

Leela Palaces Hotels Rallies 10% to Hit Record High on Strong Q2 Profit and Surge in Room Rates

Category: Markets

Shares of luxury hospitality chain Leela Palaces Hotels & Resorts surged up to 10% in intraday trade, hitting a fresh all-time high following the announcement of robust financial earnings for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY27). The stock has appreciated more than 42% over the past four months, reflecting heightened investor appetite for premium travel and hospitality plays.

The company posted a consolidated net profit of ₹94.6 crore for the second quarter, marking a 27% increase compared to ₹74.7 crore reported in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Revenue from operations climbed 33% year-on-year to ₹411.9 crore, driven by buoyant domestic travel demand, rising corporate spending, and strong pricing power across its properties.

Key Financial and Operational Highlights

• Operating Revenue: Rose 33% year-on-year to ₹411.9 crore.

• Operating EBITDA: Advanced 36% year-on-year to ₹187.7 crore, up from the prior-year period.

• Operating EBITDA Margin: Expanded by 118 basis points to 46%, aided by operational efficiencies and operating leverage.

• Net Profit (PAT): Increased 27% year-on-year to ₹94.6 crore.

• Average Daily Rate (ADR): Grew 30% year-on-year to ₹25,046.

• Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR): Jumped 30% year-on-year to ₹17,225.

Operational Performance and Segment Growth

Growth during the quarter was broad-based across segments. Room revenue surged 39% year-on-year, while Food and Beverage (F&B) income rose 21%. Fees from Hotel Management Agreements (HMA) jumped 76%, reflecting an accelerating asset-light expansion model and broadening geographic footprint. Additionally, non-room revenue accounted for over 50% of total revenue during the first half of the financial year, underlining the group's revenue diversification.

Commenting on the results, Anuraag Bhatnagar, Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer of Leela Palaces Hotels & Resorts, stated that the 30% RevPAR growth was led by a record 30% increase in ADR, demonstrating strong pricing power and resilient demand for differentiated luxury offerings. He noted that suite occupancy increased by over 700 basis points, and high-profile international and government gatherings, such as the BRICS Summit in Delhi, contributed meaningfully to premium room occupancy.

Brokerage Views and Sector Outlook

Brokerage firm Jefferies highlighted that the quarter's expansion was entirely driven by average room rates (ARR), propelled by healthy domestic leisure trends and robust Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) activity. Analysts noted that with limited premium room supply additions entering major metropolitan cities and leisure hotspots, established luxury hotel operators continue to maintain commanding yields....

Nifty 50 TRI Analysis Shows 80 Percent of 15-Year Wealth Created in Four One-Year Sprints

Category: Markets

Historical data analyzing the performance of the Nifty 50 Total Return Index (TRI) over a 15-year horizon demonstrates that equity wealth compounding does not occur in a steady, linear trajectory. Instead, approximately 70% to 80% of total index returns over the period were compressed into merely 20% to 30% of the time. The analysis, sourced from Bloomberg and NSE market data, shows that the vast majority of the benchmark's long-term gains emerged from four distinct one-year rally phases, interspersed with multi-year periods of sideways consolidation.

Deconstructing the 15-Year Cycle

The historical timeline highlights a recurring structural rhythm in Indian equities: long stretches of range-bound movement followed by abrupt, aggressive upside rallies.

Key Phases Identified in the Nifty 50 TRI Performance:

• June 2009 to May 2012: Following the post-Global Financial Crisis rebound, the market spent nearly three years moving sideways.

• The 41% Breakout: The index broke out of its three-year stagnation to deliver an explosive 41% advance in roughly a single year, culminating near March 2015.

• March 2015 to February 2018: The market entered another two-year flat consolidation before logging a sharp 21% surge over the subsequent one-year phase.

• February 2018 to December 2020: Investors witnessed another two-year period of range-bound volatility, which concluded with a post-pandemic liquidity rally that propelled the index upward by 57% in approximately 12 months.

• Late 2021 to 2023 Consolidation: After two years of muted, sideways movement, the index resumed its ascent with a 23% burst, lifting the benchmark to new record territories.

The Trap of Sideways Markets

For Indian retail market participants, periods of market stagnation often trigger performance anxiety and behavioral errors. When the headline index moves sideways for two consecutive years, portfolio returns appear stagnant, leading many investors to prematurely pause Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), reallocate to fixed income, or attempt tactical market timing.

However, the historical distribution of returns demonstrates that long periods of sideways trading—often characterized as "long periods of boredom"—form the foundational accumulation phases required for the next leg of structural expansion. Because market rallies occur unpredictably and are concentrated in narrow windows of time, being on the sidelines during these brief inflection points permanently impairs long-term compounding.

Implications for Indian Portfolio Strategy:...

BSE Sensex Delivers 474.6% Return Over Two Decades as Benchmark Climbs from 12700 to 73054

Category: Markets

Two decades of economic transformation and corporate expansion have fundamentally reshaped Dalal Street. A comparative market retrospective published by The Hindu BusinessLine traces the journey of the 30-share BSE Sensex, revealing how India's bellwether index moved from 12,700 points in mid-October 2006 to 73,054 points by October 2026.

The benchmark generated an aggregate absolute return of +474.6% over the 20-year span, translating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 12.8% per annum. This performance highlights the wealth-compounding capacity of Indian equities, reinforcing the timeless market adage: "Patience builds wealth. The power of compounding works."

From the 2006 Bull Run to a Modernized Market

In October 2006, the Indian stock market was navigating a powerful mid-2000s expansion. Supported by strong corporate profitability, double-digit credit growth, and buoyant global risk appetite, the Sensex had crossed 12,700 points for the first time. At that time, India's financial system was heavily dependent on Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) flows, and market participation among domestic retail households was relatively narrow.

Two decades later, the marketplace presents a vastly more resilient architecture:

• Retail and DII Counterweight: The structural rise of systematic investment plans (SIPs), mutual funds, and pension funds through Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) has created a reliable shock absorber against global capital flight.

• Expanded Corporate Breadth: The composition of the benchmark has evolved, accommodating private banking giants, IT leaders, consumer powerhouses, and high-growth manufacturing firms alongside traditional heavyweights.

• Digital Infrastructure and Transparency: Regulatory initiatives led by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) alongside paperless digital trading have transformed market access across tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Navigating Multiple Shocks to Compound Wealth

The journey from 12,700 to 73,054 points was far from linear. Over the past twenty years, long-term investors had to endure some of the most volatile episodes in financial history:

Key Historical Hurdles Overcome:
* The 2008 Global Financial Crisis, which triggered severe drawdowns across emerging markets.
* The 2013 "Taper Tantrum" and currency depreciations against the US dollar.
* Structural domestic disruptions, including the 2016 demonetisation drive and the transition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.
* The unprecedented economic collapse and recovery following the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
* Geopolitical conflicts, elevated commodity cycles, and persistent global interest rate volatility....

Getfive Funds Secures SEBI Nod for ₹500 Crore SME-Focused AIF

Category: Markets

Financial services and merchant banking firm Getfive Funds has secured regulatory approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch Getfive Opportunity Fund II, a Category-I Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) with a target corpus of ₹500 crore.

The fund marks the firm's second AIF vehicle, scaling up its capital deployment strategy to back growth-stage Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) located across Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 markets in India.

Target Sectors and Investment Mandate

Getfive Opportunity Fund II has outlined a wide cross-sector mandate designed to capitalize on India's industrial transformation, domestic manufacturing push, and technology adoption.

The fund plans to allocate capital across sectors including:

• Defence, aerospace, and space-tech

• Deep-tech and precision engineering

• Advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare

• Financial services, technology, and consumer & retail

• Agritech, logistics, supply chain management, and renewable energy

• Waste management and education

The fund will follow the firm’s proprietary "V3" (V-Cube) framework—evaluating businesses on Vision Through Promoter, Value Through Company, and Velocity Through Industry. Shrikant Goyal, Managing Director and Fund Manager at Getfive Funds, will helm the fund. Goyal brings nearly two decades of experience in capital markets, corporate fundraising, and structured debt.

Maturing SME Ecosystem and Public Markets Outlook

The launch comes amid heightened interest in India’s small-cap and SME public platforms, specifically BSE SME and NSE Emerge. However, the influx of capital has occasionally sparked market regulator concerns regarding excessive retail speculation and listing-day volatility.

Goyal emphasized that institutional capital plays a critical role in vetting balance sheets and instilling corporate governance before companies approach public markets. According to Getfive's internal assessments, roughly 400 SME companies are projected to list on the BSE SME and NSE Emerge platforms over the next three to four years.

Historical trends in the asset class demonstrate strong divergence: approximately 10% of listed SME companies have delivered returns exceeding ten times, and roughly 5% have generated more than twenty times for early investors. Conversely, weaker entities present considerable capital impairment risks.

Strategic Implications for Market Participants

Getfive Funds advised market participants to avoid treating SME investing as a short-term listing-day arbitrage or speculative play. Instead, the firm advocates scrutinizing operational hygiene—such as receivables, trade creditors, and inventory management—which can weed out nearly 80% of accounting red flags before taking a minimum three-year investment view....

Sensex Surges 1,200 Points as Nifty Closes at Record High Nearing 23,000 Milestone

Category: Markets

Benchmark equity indices on Dalal Street witnessed an aggressive bull run as the BSE Sensex soared 1,196.98 points, or 1.61 percent, to finish at a record 75,418.04. The NSE Nifty 50 climbed 369.85 points, or 1.64 percent, to settle at 22,967.85 after touching an intraday all-time high of 22,989.60—landing merely a few points shy of the landmark 23,000 threshold.

The charge was led by sharp gains in high-beta sectors, with the Nifty IT index advancing around 2 percent and the Nifty Auto index climbing roughly 1.5 percent. Concurrently, the banking index also added significant strength, as the Nifty Bank surged close to 2 percent to breach 48,700.

Key Drivers Behind the Dalal Street Rally:

• Robust Large-Cap Participation: Sustained institutional accumulation in front-line heavyweights provided the underlying firepower for the market, reversing recent choppy sessions.

• Macro Boost and RBI Dividend: Investor sentiment was bolstered by macroeconomic resilience, supported by the Reserve Bank of India's substantial surplus transfer to the government, which improved domestic fiscal headroom and eased pressure on bond yields.

• Sectoral Rotation into Value: Buying interest revived across export-oriented technology counters and consumer-facing automotive players after a phase of sector consolidation.

Top Gaining Sectors and Heavyweight Movers:

The rally exhibited strong sector breadth, with automotive and technology names dominating trading volumes.

• Automobile Stocks: Heavyweights like Mahindra & Mahindra, Eicher Motors, and Tata Motors saw robust buying, driven by steady demand outlooks and volume resilience across passenger and commercial segments.

• Information Technology: Major tech firms, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Tech Mahindra, tracked higher after extended consolidation, supporting the IT basket's nearly 2 percent jump.

• Financial Services: Private and public sector lenders, including Axis Bank and ICICI Bank, reinforced the rally as the banking gauge added over 900 points.

Technical Outlook:

Market analysts noted that reclaiming intraday record highs with expanding breadth signifies robust momentum. With the Nifty establishing a strong support base between 22,600 and 22,800, technical analysts suggest that a decisive closing above the 23,000 psychological barrier could open upside paths toward the 23,200 to 23,400 territory. Market participants continue to watch crude oil prices, foreign portfolio flows, and key global cues to determine the durability of the current breakout....

Reliance Industries Shares Jump Nearly 3% as Jio Platforms Unveils Record ₹30,213 Crore IPO Price Band

Category: Markets

Shares of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) gained as much as 2.85% to touch an intraday high of ₹1,209.50 on the BSE, pushing the conglomerate's market capitalisation to ₹16.33 lakh crore. The sharp uptick came after its digital and telecommunications subsidiary, Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), officially fixed the price band for its historic initial public offering (IPO).

The Board-appointed IPO committee set the price band between ₹1,065 and ₹1,119 per equity share of face value ₹10 each. At the upper cap, the public offering will raise approximately ₹30,213 crore, overtaking Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870 crore listing in 2024 to become the largest IPO in the history of Indian capital markets.

Key Issue Details and Timelines

Jio Platforms filed its Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) with the Registrar of Companies, Gujarat, formalising the following schedule and structure:

• Issue Structure: The IPO consists of an entirely fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares, with no offer-for-sale (OFS) component from existing shareholders.

• Issue Dates: The anchor investor bidding opens on October 19, 2026, while the public issue will remain open from October 21 to October 23, 2026.

• Bid Lot Size: Investors can bid for a minimum of 12 equity shares and in multiples of 12 shares thereafter.

• Valuation: At the cap price of ₹1,119 per share, Jio Platforms commands an implied post-issue market valuation of approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore ($107 billion).

Special Quotas for Shareholders and Employees

The issue provides notable allocations for stakeholders associated with the parent firm:

• RIL Shareholder Quota: A reservation of shares worth up to ₹2,500 crore has been earmarked for eligible individual shareholders and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) holding RIL stock as of the RHP filing date, October 14, 2026.

• Employee Reservation: Up to ₹500 crore worth of equity shares is reserved for eligible employees, who are also entitled to a discount of ₹54 per share.

Deployment of Funds and Strategic Impact

Unlike public offerings dominated by existing shareholders offloading equity, the entire capital raised by Jio Platforms will flow directly into the business. The proceeds will primarily be utilised to prepay and repay borrowings of its primary operating arm, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, strengthening its balance sheet and reducing finance costs, alongside general corporate purposes....

SEBI Overhauls Portfolio Managers Framework and Clears Major Regulatory Relaxations Across Market Segments

Category: Markets

In a comprehensive move to simplify compliance and modernise wealth management frameworks, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has approved the replacement of the SEBI (Portfolio Managers) Regulations, 2020 with the newly structured SEBI (Portfolio Managers) Regulations. The regulatory revamp comes as assets under management (AUM) in India's portfolio management services (PMS) ecosystem surged from ₹18.07 lakh crore in April 2019 to over ₹44 lakh crore.

The regulator's comprehensive overhaul is designed to eliminate regulatory clutter, reduce administrative overhead, and expand asset allocation capabilities for high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and family offices. Demonstrating SEBI's drive toward regulatory rationalisation, the size of the rulebook has been slashed from 70 pages down to 33 pages—a 53% cut—while reducing the word count by roughly 42% and trimming provisos from 47 to just four.

Key Investment Flexibilities for Portfolio Managers:

• Primary Market Access: Portfolio managers are now permitted to participate directly in initial public offerings (IPOs) and primary debt issuances, overcoming previous restrictions that limited discretionary mandates to already-listed and traded securities.

• Derivative Exposures: Flexibility has been broadened to take exchange-traded derivative positions up to 1.25 times client AUM under defined parameters and safeguards.

• Unlisted Debt Allocation: Discretionary managers can allocate up to 10% of portfolio value into investment-grade unlisted debt instruments, provided explicit client consent is obtained.

• Foreign Asset Investments: Clear paths have been carved out to facilitate investments in overseas securities under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) and FEMA framework.

• Specialised Mutual Fund Route: A dedicated pathway focused exclusively on investing in mutual fund units has been outlined, carrying lower minimum thresholds and a 1% cap on management fees to democratise managed portfolios.

Operational and Administrative Ease

To minimise onboarding bottlenecks, SEBI has moved to rationalise the reliance on standalone Powers of Attorney (PoA) for regular portfolio management processes by incorporating requisite authorities directly into standard client-manager agreements. However, compliance with statutory banking protocols under RBI guidelines for bank account operations remains intact.

Standardised client agreements and "Most Important Terms and Conditions" (MITC) disclosures are being introduced to ensure investors clearly understand cost structures and fee computations, with an enforced 30-day timeline for managers to resolve fee disputes.

Broad Regulatory Rationalisation Across Market Segments

The PMS overhaul was part of a wider slate of regulatory reforms cleared by the capital markets watchdog to enhance business agility:...

Pernod Ricard Prepares Over 1 Billion Dollar India IPO as Sales Drop in US and China

Category: Markets

Global drinks conglomerate Pernod Ricard SA is actively laying the groundwork for an initial public offering (IPO) of its Indian subsidiary, as persistent sales contractions across the United States and China elevate India into its primary growth engine.

The maker of Jameson Irish whiskey, Absolut vodka, and Chivas Regal disclosed that it is carrying out operational and legal preparatory work for a domestic listing, subject to formal board approval. The move comes on the back of starkly diverging regional performances reported in the group's first-quarter fiscal 2027 financial update.

India Shines Amid Global Headwinds

Pernod Ricard posted a 0.9% organic net sales contraction to €2.234 billion (approximately $2.51 billion) for Q1 FY27, weighed down by extended distributor destocking and weak consumer sentiment in its top markets.

Regional Performance Breakdown:

• United States: Net sales declined 10% organically year-on-year.

• China: Revenue dropped 25% due to soft macro spending and retail inventory adjustments.

• India: Sales surged 19% in organic terms, maintaining double-digit momentum after delivering 7% growth in fiscal 2026.

India currently ranks as the world's largest spirits market by volume, absorbing around 440 million cases annually. While global distillers grapple with an industry-wide demand slump and GLP-1 headwind narratives in Western economies, Indian consumers have sustained robust premiumisation trends across domestic whiskies and imported spirits.

Groundwork for a Mega Dalal Street Debut

The proposed share sale by Pernod Ricard India could seek to raise upwards of $1 billion (more than ₹9,450 crore), which would rank it among the largest consumer listings on Indian exchanges.

To steer the syndicate, the spirits maker has engaged Kotak Mahindra Capital, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and BofA Securities as financial advisors, alongside legal counsel Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.

Operationally, the domestic unit has initiated corporate restructuring steps, filing to convert its corporate status from Pernod Ricard India Private Limited to Pernod Ricard India Limited and instructing vendor networks to align billing systems accordingly.

Speaking on the strategic evaluation, Pernod Ricard Global Chief Executive Alexandre Ricard confirmed that the board continues to deliberate the proposal to maximize shareholder value, noting that the company is assessing the strategic rationale and the pros and cons of such a transaction.

Astranova Mobility Arm NovaFusion Capital Secures RBI NBFC Licence and Targets Rs 5000 Crore AUM

Category: Markets

Astranova Mobility’s dedicated lending arm, NovaFusion Capital, has received regulatory approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC). The green-financing arm secured the registration within 90 days of application and has outlined an ambitious roadmap to reach ₹5,000 crore in Assets Under Management (AUM) over the next five years.

NovaFusion Capital has already secured capital commitments to deploy its initial tranche of ₹200 crore. The financing platform aims to solve liquidity bottlenecks in India's commercial transition to clean mobility by catering directly to commercial vehicle operators, gig economy workers, and fleet enterprises.

Strategic Shift Toward Commercial Clean Mobility

The NBFC licence marks a pivotal operational transition for Astranova Mobility, evolving from asset management and leasing into direct, regulated credit underwriting. To date, Astranova Mobility has leased over ₹450 crore in electric vehicle (EV) assets. The platform is backed by institutional investors, including the Asian Development Bank (ADB), IvyCap Ventures, AdvantEdge Founders, and Trucks Venture Capital.

According to Astranova Mobility Founder and CEO Kunal Mundra, the lending arm will strictly prioritize income-generating assets.

"With the help of this NBFC, our aspiration really is to deploy ₹5,000 crore worth of financing in the next five years," Mundra noted. "It will be primarily for electric vehicles and only for commercial operators. That means everyone who earns a livelihood with the help of these assets."

Building Specialized Underwriting for Climate Assets

Mainstream commercial banks and diversified NBFCs have historically faced difficulties underwriting small commercial EV operators due to lack of traditional credit histories, volatile residual battery values, and unproven secondary markets. NovaFusion Capital plans to mitigate these structural risks by integrating asset-level telematics, battery health tracking, and operational route data into its underwriting parameters.

Shraddha Srimal, CEO of NovaFusion Capital, emphasized that the venture addresses an essential macro credit deficit in India's decarbonization push:

Core Operating Focus Areas:

• Underwriting loans for commercial two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers used in logistics and ride-hailing fleets.

• Leveraging vehicle telematics and partner fleet data to evaluate asset utilization, battery degradation, and borrower earnings capacity in real time.

• Expanding credit architecture across broader climate-positive commercial hardware beyond traditional automotive finance....

SEBI to Revamp Closing Auction Session Framework to Address Expiry Day Volatility

Category: Markets

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is finalizing comprehensive guidelines to overhaul the Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework and recalibrate the methodology used for calculating derivative contract settlement prices on expiry days.

Speaking at industry events, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey confirmed that the regulator is reviewing feedback gathered from market participants and will soon publish revised operational guidelines. The initiative comes in the wake of mounting trader concerns over sharp end-of-session swings and thin auction liquidity observed during weekly and monthly derivative expiries.

Scrutiny on Closing Auction Mechanics

The Closing Auction Session was introduced to modernize cash equity closing-price discovery and align the Indian bourse infrastructure with mature global markets. However, the initial rollout faced friction, with thin institutional participation in the closing window occasionally exacerbating price distortion in index components. Because the final cash closing prices feed directly into the settlement values of cash-settled futures and options contracts, abrupt closing-minute moves created substantial volatility for market participants.

SEBI had initiated public feedback on proposed amendments covering CAS procedures, execution windows, and expiry settlement calculations. The regulator received a massive response from the domestic trading ecosystem, drawing tens of thousands of comments from brokers, institutional funds, proprietary trading desks, and retail derivative traders.

Key Objectives of the CAS Review:

• Improving liquidity and depth during the auction window to prevent abnormal spikes in heavyweight underlying stocks.

• Refining the formula used to derive final settlement prices for index and single-stock derivatives on contract expiration sessions.

• Preventing order spoofing and suspected manipulative conduct during the pre-close matching phase.

• Enhancing institutional and broker participation across both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE.

Broader Regulatory Reforms Underway

Beyond the CAS revisions, Chairman Pandey outlined several market structure updates aimed at reducing operational friction and lowering compliance costs:

Broader Reforms in the Pipeline:

• Interoperability Expansion: SEBI is targeting implementation to bring transactions such as tender offers, share buybacks, and offers for sale (OFS) under the clearing corporation interoperability framework, eliminating parallel clearing requirements and boosting capital efficiency.

• Digital Onboarding for Overseas Investors: Simplified digital KYC and onboarding routes for Persons Resident Outside India (PROIs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are in the pipeline, removing the mandate for physical presence.

• Proportionate Broker Compliance: The regulator is exploring a graded compliance architecture that calibrates regulatory demands to a brokerage's size, technological dependency, and customer exposure....

• FY25 Turnover: ₹48.12 crore

• FY24 Turnover: Nil

• Consideration: ₹1 lakh (INR 0.10 million) in cash

• Workforce: Approximately 450 professionals specialising in software engineering, data & analytics, and artificial intelligence

Because captive GCCs operate on a cost-recovery billing model with their global parent companies, equity valuations for transfers of such entities remain minimal, while the broader commercial upside sits in associated long-term vendor services contracts. Industry estimates project the broader multi-year managed services engagement between TCS and Best Buy at roughly ₹2,000 crore.

Strategic Rationale: AI-Native Capability Center

The transaction transitions Best Buy’s India workforce into TCS’s global operating organisation while ensuring business continuity. TCS plans to transform the Bengaluru unit into an AI-Native Capability Center (AICC).

Leveraging TCS’s Global Value & Innovation Centres framework, the combined teams will redesign enterprise workflows, build AI-powered customer experiences, and implement agentic automation tailored to Best Buy’s retail operations.

Krishnan Ramanujam, President of the Consumer Business Group at TCS, stated that bringing Best Buy's talent together with TCS’s retail and AI execution capabilities will create an AI-native engine aligned to the client’s priorities, while serving as a repeatable framework across the retail industry. Ahrey Smith, Vice President of Technology Strategy and Transformation at Best Buy, highlighted that TCS offers the technology capabilities required to build on the India team’s domain expertise.

Market Impact for Indian Investors

For Dalal Street, GCC carve-outs represent an evolving growth avenue for Indian Tier-1 IT services companies. While global corporate GCC setups in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad have occasionally competed with IT vendors for specialised tech talent, transactions like this convert existing GCC footprints into guaranteed multi-year service contracts....

KOSPI Plunges Over 8 Percent Triggering Circuit Breaker as South Korea Tech Rout Tests Indian Market Sentiment

Category: Markets

Trading on the Korea Exchange ground to a halt after South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index plummeted over 8% in intraday trade, triggering a Level 1 circuit breaker that suspended all equity transactions for 20 minutes. Under local exchange mechanisms, trading resumes after the temporary halt, with a Level 2 circuit breaker slated to trigger should losses deepen to 15%.

The precipitous decline marks the tenth circuit-breaker event on the KOSPI this year and caps a seven-session losing streak. The selloff was accompanied by automated "sidecar" trading curbs earlier in the session as index futures sank rapidly under unrelenting institutional and foreign selling pressure.

Semiconductor Heavyweights Bear the Brunt

The market meltdown was largely concentrated in the country’s marquee semiconductor and technology giants. The KOSPI carries an unusually heavy structural weighting in hardware and memory chips, leaving the broader index exceptionally vulnerable to swings in global technology sentiment.

Key Stock Movements in Seoul:

• Samsung Electronics (005930): Plunged 9.70%, touching intraday lows not seen in months as foreign institutional investors aggressively trimmed positions.

• SK Hynix (000660): Slumped between 10.92% and 11.35%, knocking the artificial intelligence memory supplier's market capitalisation below the 1,000 trillion won threshold.

• Samsung Electro-Mechanics (009150): Extended losses past 16%, reflecting deep margin anxieties in electronic component manufacturing.

• SK Square (402340): Slipped over 10%, weighed down by its significant holding in the broader semiconductor ecosystem.

• LG Energy Solution (373220): Fell more than 5.4%, displaying broader risk-off contagion across high-valuation manufacturing names.

The immediate trigger for the rout was a sharp repricing of interest-rate expectations following hotter-than-expected inflation data from the United States. With US headline consumer price index figures accelerating and energy costs creeping higher, expectations of prolonged high borrowing costs sent shockwaves across global tech. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slid over 4% overnight, exacerbating skepticism over whether massive capital expenditure in artificial intelligence data centres and infrastructure will yield near-term earnings commensurate with their valuations.

Why This Matters to Dalal Street

For investors in India, the dramatic turbulence in East Asian markets provides several crucial macroeconomic and strategic takeaways:

1. Insulation Through Sectoral Diversification...

SEBI Advisory Panel Recommends Retaining 30-Minute VWAP for Derivatives Expiry Settlement for One Year

Category: Markets

In a significant relief to domestic market participants and derivatives traders, the Secondary Market Advisory Committee (SMAC) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has favoured retaining the existing 30-minute Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) framework for settlement on expiry days for at least one year.

The advisory panel opposed an immediate migration to a blended formula or relying on the Closing Auction Session (CAS) to calculate settlement benchmarks for index and stock derivatives. Under the existing mechanism, final settlement prices on expiry days are determined using trades executed during continuous trading between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM.

Backlash Against Closing Auction Volatility

The recommendation follows widespread market pushback against the newly introduced CAS framework, which participants blamed for abnormal price distortions and sharp volatility spikes on expiry days due to thin liquidity during auction matching.

SEBI had earlier floated a 17-page consultation paper proposing options to reform the mechanism:

• Option 1: A blended model combining the continuous 30-minute VWAP with prices discovered during a 10-minute closing auction window.

• Option 2: Reverting fully to the standard 30-minute VWAP of continuous trading between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM, removing CAS entirely from derivatives expiry calculations.

The consultation closed on October 3, 2026, drawing over 20,000 stakeholder comments from institutional desks, brokers, and retail investors—far exceeding initial expectations and underscoring deep apprehensions across Dalal Street.

Extended Trading Hours on the Table

Beyond maintaining the 30-minute VWAP for settlement, the advisory panel has proposed structural adjustments to trading hours. Under the proposals discussed:

• Cash market trading would continue until 3:30 PM.

• Expiring derivatives contracts would cease trading at 3:30 PM.

• Non-expiring derivatives contracts would be permitted to trade until 3:45 PM.

While derivatives settlement is poised to retain the 30-minute VWAP for at least a year, the closing auction mechanism may continue to operate for cash-market stocks, particularly less-liquid scrips.

What It Means for Traders and Investors

For Indian retail and proprietary option writers and futures traders, the decision to maintain the 30-minute continuous VWAP eliminates unpredictability during the closing minutes of weekly and monthly contract expiries. The auction-based system had raised risks of spoofing and sharp slippages just before settlement.

The panel's recommendation will now be evaluated by the SEBI board before final circulars are notified, bringing clarity to a contentious issue that dominated market discourse over the past month....

Tonbo Imaging IPO Fully Subscribed on Day 1 Driven by Retail and NII Demand

Category: Markets

The initial public offering (IPO) of Bengaluru-based defence electronics manufacturer Tonbo Imaging India Limited was fully subscribed on Thursday, October 15, 2026, within hours of opening for bidding. Strong interest from non-institutional investors (NIIs) and retail individual investors pushed the overall subscription past the 100% mark on Day 1, supported by upbeat sentiment surrounding India's indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The public offer, which is scheduled to close on Monday, October 19, 2026, consists entirely of an Offer for Sale (OFS) of up to 1,21,74,046 equity shares of face value Rs 2 each, aggregating to approximately Rs 852.18 crore. Since the issue is purely an OFS by promoters and early investors, the company will not receive any capital proceeds from the transaction.

Issue Structure and Anchor Allocation

Tonbo Imaging has set its price band at Rs 665 to Rs 700 per equity share, with a market lot of 21 shares requiring a minimum investment of Rs 14,700 for retail applicants.

Ahead of the opening, the company mobilised Rs 255.36 crore from 43 institutional anchor investors on October 14, allotting 36,48,013 equity shares at the upper price band of Rs 700 apiece. The net public offer reserves 50% for Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs), 15% for Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs), and 35% for Retail Individual Investors (RIIs).

In the unlisted market, shares of Tonbo Imaging were commanding a grey market premium (GMP) in the range of 67% to 71%, indicating expectations of strong listing gains. Tentative timelines indicate share allotment will be finalised on October 21, followed by listing on the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on October 23, 2026.

Financial Snapshot

Tonbo Imaging specialises in electro-optical, infrared (EO/IR), embedded vision, and surveillance technologies for defence applications across 24 countries. For the financial year ended March 31, 2026 (FY26), the company posted:

• Revenue from operations of Rs 362.65 crore, declining 22.7% from Rs 469.08 crore in FY25 due to delayed international order execution amidst geopolitical developments.

• Profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 50.88 crore, down 30% compared to Rs 72.76 crore in the previous financial year.

• First-quarter performance for FY27 registered revenue of Rs 36.01 crore with a net loss of Rs 17.74 crore, largely reflecting seasonality and deferred contract execution.

At the upper price band of Rs 700, the company commands a market capitalisation of approximately Rs 4,010 crore.

RBI Burns Half of $140 Billion Special War Chest to Defend Rupee Near 97 per Dollar

Category: Markets

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has utilized roughly half of the $140 billion-plus capital haul it assembled earlier this year through special measures, according to estimates by economists and foreign exchange dealers across six major banks. The aggressive burn rate underscores severe pressure on the local currency and the central bank's commitment to containing sharp currency swings.

The drawdown has been driven by persistent spot-market dollar sales to stem the rupee's decline, coupled with dollar-rupee sell/buy swap transactions designed to manage banking liquidity while absorbing exchange-rate shocks.

The Build-Up and Rapid Depletion

Earlier in the year, the central bank took deliberate steps to reinforce its foreign exchange war chest. A cornerstone of that campaign was a dedicated dollar swap mechanism that mobilized over $140 billion, driven heavily by an estimated $133 billion in Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) [FCNR(B)] deposits raised between June and August, alongside swaps backing external commercial borrowings (ECBs) by public-sector undertakings.

However, escalating global macroeconomic headwinds, elevated crude oil prices, and sustained foreign institutional portfolio outflows exerted unrelenting downward pressure on the rupee. The local unit drifted toward historic lows around 96.9650 per dollar, prompting the banking regulator to tap into those freshly assembled reserves at an accelerating pace.

Market data indicates that at the end of September, the RBI's net forward dollar liabilities climbed to approximately $200 billion, while the value of its gold reserves stood near $106.4 billion as of early October.

Defending the 'Line in the Sand'

Currency strategists and institutional brokerages note that the central bank's recurring interventions suggest an implicit threshold near the 97 per dollar mark. Brokerage firm Ambit noted that over the past six months, the RBI has consistently intervened whenever USD/INR approached 97, turning that level into an effective operational floor.

To preserve spot reserves and bypass direct pressure on interbank currency markets, the RBI broadened its intervention toolkit with administrative and macroprudential measures:

• Oil Refiner Dollar Facility: Opening a dedicated foreign exchange window for state-run oil marketing companies, effectively removing the single largest source of corporate dollar demand from the spot foreign exchange market.

• Derivatives Cash Margin: Introducing a foreign-exchange risk reserve requiring authorized dealers to deposit with the RBI cash equal to 20% of the rupee value of eligible FX derivative transactions above $2 million, dampening speculative dollar long positions....

SEBI Engages NPCI Over Proposed 0.02% UPI Merchant Fee as Stockbrokers Raise Cost Concerns

Category: Markets

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is in active discussions with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) over the newly introduced Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework for digital transactions, following pushback from stockbrokers and asset managers.

Speaking at an industry event on Thursday, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey confirmed that the regulator is reviewing concerns and engaging with the payments body. "NPCI has just issued a statement, and we are still in talks with them," Pandey said, noting that SEBI intends to evaluate the nature of client transactions and explore ways to ease cost pressures on intermediaries.

The talks follow the announcement of an MDR framework by NPCI after Parliament amended Section 10A of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. Under the new pricing structure, standard person-to-merchant (P2M) payments above ₹2,000 will attract a fee of 0.4%, capped at ₹300 per transaction. However, capital-market transfers—covering transactions involving stockbrokers, securities dealers, mutual funds, and registered investment advisers—have been assigned a lower fee of 0.02%, also capped at ₹300 per transaction. Systematic investment plan (SIP) auto-pay mandates remain exempt.

While the rollout was initially slated for October 15, the UPI and Services Steering Committee deferred implementation until after the festive season of Diwali.

Key Industry Concerns

Stockbrokers, led by discount brokerages, have submitted representations to SEBI and the central government arguing that treating broking entities as traditional retail merchants is fundamentally flawed:

• Idle Client Balances: Investors frequently transfer money into their trading ledger to maintain margins or prepare for market opportunities without necessarily executing a trade. In such cases, brokers would bear transaction fees on fund inflows while earning zero brokerage revenue.

• Quarterly Account Settlements: Under SEBI’s mandatory client float regulations, brokers must remit unutilised funds back to clients' bank accounts on a monthly or quarterly basis to prevent misappropriation. Clients routinely transfer those same funds back into their trading accounts via UPI, creating a recurring cycle where brokers incur payment fees on the same pool of capital repeatedly.

• Comparative Cost Pressures: Industry estimates indicate that net banking transfers incur a negotiated flat fee ranging between ₹8 and ₹12 with partner banks. By contrast, a 0.02% MDR charge on a ₹1,00,000 UPI transfer amounts to ₹20, creating disincentives for UPI adoption in higher-value capital market transactions....

Supreme Court Upholds Bombay High Court Order Quashing Yes Bank Rs 8,415 Crore AT1 Bond Write-Off

Category: Markets

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of India has upheld the Bombay High Court's January 2023 ruling that quashed the write-off of Yes Bank's Additional Tier-1 (AT1) bonds worth Rs 8,415 crore. A bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih dismissed the appeals filed by Yes Bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the Central Government, effectively reinstating the claims of bondholders who had their investments extinguished during the bank's March 2020 rescue.

The dispute originated during the March 2020 rescue of Yes Bank. Amid mounting bad debt and an acute liquidity crisis, the RBI superseded the bank's board and appointed an administrator under a government-notified reconstruction scheme. As part of the restructuring process, the administrator wrote down Rs 8,415 crore of perpetual AT1 bonds to zero. While bondholders faced a complete wipeout, existing equity shareholders faced only a three-year lock-in on 75% of their shareholdings.

Bondholders, including institutional players such as mutual funds (including Nippon India Mutual Fund, formerly Reliance Nippon) alongside thousands of retail investors represented by Axis Trustee Services, challenged the decision before the Bombay High Court. In January 2023, the High Court set aside the write-off on the grounds that the administrator exceeded his authority, as the Union Government's final gazetted reconstruction scheme contained no specific provision directing an AT1 write-down.

The Supreme Court examined key legal questions regarding whether the administrator could write down the bonds absent an explicit clause in the gazetted scheme and whether the action aligned with the RBI Master Circular and the information memorandum. Concluding that the administrator's action was unauthorized under the terms of the final scheme, the apex bench declined to interfere with the High Court's order.

Market Reaction and Stock Impact

Following the announcement of the verdict, Yes Bank shares witnessed aggressive selling pressure on Indian bourses:

• Yes Bank shares tumbled as much as 10% to touch the lower circuit at Rs 19.09 apiece on the NSE.

• The private lender’s stock dropped sharply from intraday levels around Rs 21.25.

• The broader market diverged sharply from the bank's performance, with benchmark indices such as the BSE Sensex trading firmly in positive territory during the session.

Implications for Yes Bank and Bond Investors

The apex court's ruling brings an end to a multi-year legal battle and forces Yes Bank and banking regulators to determine settlement mechanisms.

Aeroflex Industries Shares Plunge 11% on Heavy Volumes After Announcing Rs 202 Crore Capex Plan

Category: Markets

Shares of Aeroflex Industries experienced heavy selling pressure on Thursday, sliding as much as 11 per cent to an intraday low of ₹508.60 on the BSE. The sharp drop triggered a two-day decline of 17 per cent from the stock's 52-week high of ₹613.50 recorded on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Trading activity surged alongside the sell-off, with a combined 5.41 million shares changing hands across the BSE and NSE during the session. By 2:36 PM, the stock was trading 9 per cent lower at ₹518.60, even as the benchmark BSE Sensex traded higher by 1.8 per cent.

Sell-off Follows Capex Announcement

The steep correction comes immediately after Aeroflex Industries' board of directors met on October 14 to approve a major capacity expansion programme. The approved project involves a total capital expenditure (capex) outlay of ₹202 crore aimed at ramping up the company's manufacturing footprint.

Prior to the meeting, the counter had surged on expectations surrounding the expansion agenda. However, the formal disclosure sparked a classic "sell-on-news" reaction, as short-term traders and institutional desks moved swiftly to lock in profits following the sharp run-up to record peaks.

Multibagger Trajectory Remains Intact

Despite the steep two-session pullback, the broader technical structure and long-term performance of Aeroflex Industries continue to outperform the wider Indian equity markets.

Key Stock Performance Metrics:

• The stock has advanced 169 per cent so far in calendar year 2026, compared to a 13 per cent decline in the benchmark BSE Sensex over the same period.

• Over the trailing six months, Aeroflex shares have gained 77 per cent against a 5 per cent drop in the BSE Sensex.

• The counter has rebounded over 200 per cent from its 52-week low of ₹158.00.

Business and Growth Drivers

Aeroflex Industries specializes in manufacturing metallic flexible flow solutions, primarily using stainless steel. The company's product line includes flexible hoses, hose assemblies, and precision piping used to transfer liquids and gases in critical operating environments.

The company has expanded its focus into high-growth sectors, particularly supplying liquid cooling solutions and skid assemblies for high-density applications such as data centres, alongside catering to oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and power industries. Investors will now be monitoring how quickly the newly announced ₹202 crore capex can be operationalized and whether volume growth can sustain the stock's rich valuation multiples after this corrective phase....
