SEBI Panel Backs 30-Minute VWAP Settlement for Derivatives as Market Pushes Back Against Closing Auction Pricing
Category: Markets
In a significant relief to traders and domestic brokerages, a Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) advisory panel has recommended retaining the traditional 30-minute Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) methodology for determining expiry-day settlement prices in stock and index derivatives, stepping back from the full application of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) for contract settlement.
The recommendation follows extensive market feedback, including nearly 20,000 public responses to a consultation paper issued by SEBI on September 12, 2026. Participants overwhelmingly highlighted that calculating derivatives expiry settlements based on the Indicative Equilibrium Price (IEP) generated during the CAS led to sharp price swings, lower liquidity, and severe execution risks in the final hour of trade.
Pushback Against the Closing Auction Framework
The regulator initially rolled out the Closing Auction Session on August 3, 2026, across the futures and options (F&O) universe to improve cash-market closing price discovery and align domestic bourses with global exchanges like the NYSE and LSE. However, the shift triggered unintended disruption on expiry days.
Traders noted that index prices frequently fluctuated by around 1% during the auction window due to concentrated order imbalances and low liquidity, making it exceedingly hazardous for options sellers to write contracts or hold overnight positions into the close. As volumes dropped, market participants urged SEBI to decouple cash-market closing prices from derivatives settlement.
Under the panel's backed framework, the settlement price of index derivatives will continue to track the underlying index value computed using the VWAP of constituent shares between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM during the continuous trading session. Similarly, clearing corporations will determine settlement prices for expiring stock derivatives using the 30-minute VWAP of the underlying equities across exchanges.
Key Framework and Timing Adjustments
While retaining VWAP for derivatives settlement, SEBI has refined the operating parameters for CAS in the equity cash segment, which remains intact for discovering official stock closing prices.
Major Operational Changes:
• Normal continuous trading in equities will run up to 3:30 PM, after which a 10-minute CAS will operate between 3:30 PM and 3:40 PM on all trading days.
• Between 3:30 PM and 3:31 PM, exchanges will run a reference-price calculation window using the 15-minute VWAP of continuous trade, followed by order entry for limit and market orders until 3:36 PM.
• Only limit orders will be permitted between 3:36 PM and random closure between 3:38 PM and 3:40 PM, preventing last-second cancellations....

Axis Bank Q2 Net Profit Jumps 38% to Rs 7,003 Crore as NII Beats Estimates
Category: Markets
Private sector lender Axis Bank announced its financial results for the second quarter (Q2 FY27), posting a standalone net profit of Rs 7,003 crore. The figure represents an increase of nearly 38% compared to the Rs 5,089 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.
While bottom-line growth remained robust, net profit slightly trailed Street expectations, missing the consensus poll estimate of Rs 7,132 crore by roughly 1.8%. However, core operations showed notable resilience, supported by healthier asset quality metrics and lower provisions.
Key Earnings Highlights
Financial Performance:
• Net Profit: Rose 37.6% year-on-year to Rs 7,003.3 crore compared to Rs 5,090 crore in Q2 FY26.
• Net Interest Income (NII): Increased 11.8% year-on-year to Rs 15,372 crore, up from Rs 13,744 crore in the year-ago period. This beat analyst expectations, including the CNBC-TV18 estimate of Rs 14,970 crore and the Bloomberg estimate of Rs 15,259 crore.
• Net Interest Margin (NIM): Reported at 3.36% for the quarter.
• Provisions: Total provisions dropped significantly to Rs 1,694 crore, down from Rs 2,223 crore in the preceding quarter and Rs 3,547 crore in Q2 FY26.
Asset Quality Strengthens
The bank witnessed sequential as well as annual improvements across its bad loan portfolios. Gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) and net non-performing assets (NNPAs) both trended downward during the three months ended September.
Bad Loan Metrics:
• Gross NPA Ratio: Stood at 1.16%, improving from 1.28% in the June quarter and 1.46% reported in the previous year.
• Net NPA Ratio: Eased to 0.35%, compared to 0.39% in the prior quarter.
• Absolute Gross NPAs: Declined to Rs 16,778 crore against Rs 17,124.3 crore sequentially.
• Absolute Net NPAs: Contracted to Rs 5,054 crore from Rs 5,192.6 crore in the first quarter.
Market Context and Sector Impact
Axis Bank's operational performance reflects broader stability in India's commercial banking environment, where disciplined underwriting and lower credit costs have helped cushion margins against competitive deposit repricing.
The higher-than-expected NII is expected to offer support to banking counters on Dalal Street when markets resume trading on Monday, with investors closely watching management commentary regarding loan disbursement trends, deposit growth, and full-year margin guidance....

Tanker Hit off Saudi Coast Spurs Fresh Persian Gulf Supply Worries for Dalal Street
Category: Markets
Global energy markets face fresh geopolitical friction following an attack on a commercial tanker off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. According to advisories issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel was struck by an unknown projectile approximately 68 nautical miles (about 125 kilometres) northeast of the key industrial and port city of Al Jubail.
The incident occurred at approximately 0900 GMT on Friday. UKMTO confirmed that all crew members were safely evacuated from the vessel with no casualties reported, and no immediate environmental damage was detected. Nonetheless, the targeted strike inside the Persian Gulf represents an escalation in maritime supply risks along one of the world's most critical crude transit corridors.
Direct Implications for India's Crude Import Basket
For Indian market participants, maritime disruption in the Persian Gulf is an immediate trigger for macro volatility. India imports more than 85% of its crude oil requirements, with major suppliers including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the UAE routing shipments through the Persian Gulf and surrounding straits.
Any disruption or perceived military risk in these waters results in tangible cost escalations:
• War-Risk Insurance Premiums: Marine insurers typically adjust hull and machinery war-risk rates immediately following projectile attacks on commercial vessels, raising landing costs for Indian refiners.
• Freight and Tanker Rates: Higher risk perceptions reduce available vessel supply and drive up spot charter rates for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) and Suezmax tankers operating in the region.
• Landed Crude Cost: A sustained geopolitical premium on benchmark Brent directly inflates India's crude import bill, exerting depreciation pressure on the Indian rupee and widening the trade deficit.
Sectoral Impact on Indian Equities
The escalation has distinct ramifications across several segments tracked by domestic investors:
Downstream Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs):
Shares of state-owned refiners—including Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—typically face margin compression during crude rallies. If international crude prices surge while domestic pump prices remain capped, auto-fuel marketing margins face sharp erosion.
Upstream Producers:
Exploration and production majors such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) generally witness positive sentiment during crude spikes due to higher net realisations on their upstream output, offering a defensive hedge on Dalal Street.
Logistics and Shipping:
Domestic shipping and offshore logistical operators could face route realignments, stringent vessel security mandates, and heightened compliance protocols across Gulf operations....

SEBI Proposes Overhaul of SME IPO Norms by Slashing Application Size to Rs 1 Lakh and Raising Allottees to 500
Category: Markets
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed an extensive overhaul of the regulatory framework governing initial public offerings (IPOs) by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Through a consultation paper issued on October 14, 2026, the capital markets regulator outlined measures aimed at lowering entry barriers for retail investors, expanding the investor base, and aligning segment guidelines closer to the mainboard framework.
The market regulator has invited comments and suggestions from stakeholders on the proposed amendments through November 4, 2026.
Lower Application Ticket Size and Higher Allottee Count
Under the existing framework, the minimum application size for SME IPOs was set at Rs 2 lakh. SEBI has now proposed lowering the minimum application value to Rs 1 lakh. Under the new structure, an application would comprise four lots of at least Rs 25,000 each, with subsequent bids permitted in multiples of the lot size.
Simultaneously, SEBI proposes to raise the minimum number of allottees in an SME public issue from 200 to 500. Retail individual investors will receive at least one minimum lot, subject to availability, while the balance of shares will be allotted on a proportionate basis rather than strictly in minimum-lot multiples. The shift is designed to reduce concentration risks, encourage wider retail and non-institutional distribution, and improve post-listing share price discovery.
One-Share Trading Lots and Scrapping Market Making
To address liquidity concerns in secondary trading on SME platforms, SEBI has proposed abolishing the pre-defined, price-band-dependent lot system. Instead, securities listed on SME exchanges would trade with a lot size of just one share, matching the secondary market trading mechanism of the mainboard.
In addition, SEBI recommended removing the compulsory three-year market-making obligation for SME listings. Currently, merchant bankers or dedicated market makers are required to provide two-way quotes and ensure continuous liquidity for three years post-listing, a requirement that imposes substantial costs on smaller businesses.
Key Proposals in the SEBI Consultation Paper:
• Application Threshold: Minimum application size reduced from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 1 lakh, split into four lots of Rs 25,000 each.
• Minimum Allottees: Increased from 200 to 500 to expand the ownership base.
• Secondary Market Trading: Replacement of bundled lot trading with single-share trading lots.
• Market-Making Relief: Elimination of mandatory three-year market making for issuers.
• Underwriting Standards: Scrapping of 100% compulsory underwriting, introducing a standard 90% minimum subscription requirement....

HDFC Bank Posts Q2 Net Profit of ₹19,510 Crore as Slumping Treasury Income Offsets Credit Growth
Category: Markets
India's largest private-sector lender, HDFC Bank, reported its second-quarter financial results for the quarter ended September 30, posting a standalone net profit of ₹19,510 crore (₹195.10 billion). The bottom-line figure marks a 4.7% increase compared to ₹18,641 crore recorded in the year-earlier period.
However, the earnings narrowly missed market expectations, with analyst consensus compiled by LSEG forecasting a net profit of ₹19,526 crore. The modest profit expansion was largely attributed to a steep contraction in treasury gains, which eclipsed double-digit balance sheet expansion.
Key Earnings Highlights
• Net Profit: Rose 4.7% year-on-year to ₹19,510 crore from ₹18,641 crore.
• Net Interest Income (NII): Expanded 9.7% year-on-year to ₹34,619 crore.
• Other Income: Declined 3.6% year-on-year to ₹13,831 crore.
• Treasury Trading Gains: Slumped to ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore in the same period last year.
• Gross Advances: Expanded 16.3% year-on-year across retail and corporate segments.
• Deposits: Grew 18.8% year-on-year.
• Credit-to-Deposit (C/D) Ratio: Stood at 96.0% at the end of the quarter.
Treasury Drag and Non-Interest Income
The bank's other income line fell 3.6% year-on-year to ₹13,831 crore, primarily dragged down by treasury trading profits that tumbled to ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.
Core non-interest operational streams remained resilient: fees and commissions increased to ₹9,690 crore from ₹8,840 crore, while foreign exchange and derivative revenues softened marginally to ₹1,550 crore from ₹1,590 crore.
Balance Sheet Growth and Asset Quality
HDFC Bank sustained healthy credit growth in line with broader trends across Indian commercial banks. Gross advances grew 16.3% year-on-year, supported by broad-based corporate and retail demand. Total deposits rose by 18.8%, helping the bank maintain its credit-to-deposit ratio at 96.0%.
Asset quality indicators improved over the preceding quarter:
• The gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio improved to 1.11% as of September 30, down from 1.17% at the end of June.
• Provisions for potential bad loans and contingencies rose 2.1% year-on-year to ₹3,574 crore (₹35.74 billion), compared to the previous year.
Leadership Transition
The quarterly performance arrives ahead of a pivotal management change at the Mumbai-based lender. Anup Bagchi, a veteran of the ICICI group, will take charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a three-year tenure effective October 27.
Bagchi becomes HDFC Bank's first external chief executive, stepping into the role amid continued investor focus on the bank's operational profitability, post-merger integration milestones, and credit-to-deposit balancing....

An oil supertanker carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil exploded and caught fire after striking a naval mine while attempting to transit the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy confirmed on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
According to statements released by the IRGC through Iranian state media, the vessel had disabled its positioning and radar systems in an effort to bypass designated checkpoints and navigate an unauthorized route through the waterway. The IRGC reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed under its regulations, warning commercial vessels that unauthorized transit attempts relying on foreign military protection would face severe consequences.
The explosion marks a dangerous escalation in maritime hostilities around the narrow chokepoint between Iran and Oman, an artery that historically accounts for roughly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum and liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows.
Direct Implications for India's Energy Security
For India, the world’s third-largest crude importer, any sustained disruption or physical hazard within the Strait of Hormuz represents an acute economic threat. India imports over 85% of its crude oil requirements, with major West Asian suppliers including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar routing cargoes through the Persian Gulf and Hormuz.
While Indian refiners have increasingly diversified crude sourcing toward Russian and African grades over the past two years, Middle Eastern sour crude remains the foundational baseload feedstock for public and private refining configurations across the country. A blockage or mine threat in the corridor immediately jeopardizes prompt deliveries of crude oil as well as long-term LNG contracts vital for India's city gas distribution networks and fertilizer manufacturing plants.
Pressure Points for Indian Refiners and Dalal Street
The incident injects substantial volatility into global energy benchmarks, with immediate downstream consequences for Indian financial markets:
Key Impacts on Indian Markets:
• Margin Squeeze on Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs): State-owned refiners such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) face rising procurement costs. If retail fuel prices remain capped domestically, elevated landed crude costs will depress gross refining margins (GRMs) and marketing profitability.
• Escalating Freight and Insurance Premiums: Marine insurers have expanded high-risk zone classifications across the Gulf, prompting a steep hike in additional war-risk premiums and tanker charter rates. These surcharges directly increase the landed cost per barrel for Indian buyers....

HDFC Bank Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha Resigns as Lender Seeks RBI Nod for December 31 Exit
Category: Markets
In a major top-management reshuffle at India's largest private sector lender, HDFC Bank announced on Saturday, October 17, 2026, that its Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha has decided to step down from his role. The lender confirmed that Bharucha has requested cessation from the service of the bank with effect from the close of business hours on December 31, 2026.
The bank's Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board of Directors accepted his request during meetings held on October 16 and October 17, respectively. The board has resolved to forward the decision to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for regulatory clearance.
Leadership Transition at the Country's Largest Lender
Bharucha’s planned exit arrives just days before ICICI Group veteran Anup Bagchi takes charge as the bank's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer on October 27, 2026. Bagchi succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose tenure concludes on October 26 after he opted against seeking reappointment earlier this year.
Bharucha, 60, was widely viewed as a leading internal candidate for the MD & CEO position and had been recommended by the bank's board. However, the central bank cleared Bagchi for a three-year term at the helm, prompting a broader top-deck recalibration at the institution.
Three Decades of Institutional Stewardship
Bharucha joined HDFC Bank in October 1995, spending over 31 years shaping the lender's operational footprint. He was elevated to the board of directors as a whole-time director in 2014 and later assumed the role of Deputy Managing Director in April 2023.
Throughout his tenure, he played an instrumental role in steering the bank’s corporate banking, business banking, healthcare finance, rural banking, and core credit operations. In its regulatory disclosure, the board placed on record its deep appreciation for his contributions over three decades, particularly commending his foundational role in building the lender's robust credit architecture, which remains a benchmark for the Indian banking system.
Key Responsibilities Held by Kaizad Bharucha:
• Managing and scaling the wholesale and corporate banking portfolios.
• Structuring credit architecture and risk underwriting frameworks across corporate and retail lending divisions.
• Leading key specialized lending verticals, including business banking, infrastructure finance, and rural banking.
Earnings Performance Amid Board Changes
The leadership announcement coincided with HDFC Bank's second-quarter earnings release for the July–September 2026 quarter. The bank delivered a steady operating performance, reflecting resilience despite executive transitions:
• Standalone net profit rose 4.7% year-on-year to ₹19,510 crore....

Reliance Trims Jio Platforms IPO Size by 14% to 27 Crore Shares as Brownsville Refinery Talks Advance in Jamnagar
Category: Markets
In a pivotal dual development for India's capital markets and the energy sector, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has refined the structure of its mega public listing while making headway on its overseas downstream commitments. The conglomerate has adjusted the issue size of the much-anticipated Jio Platforms initial public offering (IPO) downward by approximately 14%, capping the issue at up to 27 crore (270 million) fresh equity shares.
The revised issue, scheduled to open for subscription between October 21 and October 23, 2026, is structured purely as a fresh issuance of equity, with no offer-for-sale (OFS) component from existing RIL shareholders. Even with the 14% reduction, the estimated 3.2 billion dollar (around ₹26,500 crore) mop-up positions Jio Platforms to become the largest-ever public issue in Indian stock market history, surpassing previous domestic primary market records.
Primary Market Dynamics: Debt Reduction and Shareholder Allocations
The capital raised from the 27 crore newly issued shares will be deployed primarily toward prepaying outstanding debt at subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, as well as meeting general corporate requirements. Market participants view the absence of an OFS as a strong vote of confidence by parent RIL, which retains its equity exposure intact rather than monetising holdings into the market.
To drive broad domestic participation, RIL has instituted structured allocations across retail, eligible group shareholders, and corporate employees. RIL has encouraged its roughly 420,000-strong workforce to participate, even advancing October salaries by approximately 15 days to provide liquidity for staff looking to bid in the offering.
Key Takeaways for Indian Market Participants:
• Listing Schedule: Jio Platforms IPO bidding is scheduled for October 21–23, 2026.
• Offering Structure: Scaled down ~14% to up to 27 crore fresh shares with zero secondary share sales by existing promoters.
• Capital Deployment: Proceeds earmarked for deleveraging Reliance Jio Infocomm’s debt obligations and general corporate purposes.
• Employee and Shareholder Quotas: Specific reservations created alongside the retail bucket, supported by early salary disbursements.
Jamnagar Talks on the $300B Texas Refining Project
Parallel to domestic primary market preparations, global attention is focused on RIL’s Jamnagar refining complex. Top-level bilateral engagements involving US officials and Reliance executives are taking place from October 18 to 22 to deliberate on the planned oil refinery at the Port of Brownsville, Texas....

Sensex Reclaims 74,700 and Nifty Advances 2.8% as RBI Rupee Support Sparks Market Rebound
Category: Markets
Indian benchmark equity indices registered a strong rally, extending their recovery for a second consecutive week as aggressive foreign-exchange intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) restored investor confidence and stabilized the Indian rupee.
The 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 3.11% over the week, finishing Friday’s trading session higher by 413 points, or 0.56%, at 74,729. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty 50 climbed 2.78% week-on-week, finishing the final session up 0.65% to close near its weekly high at 23,146. The benchmark has now gained more than 4% from its recent low of 22,231.80 recorded on October 8.
RBI Interventions Ease Currency Strain
Sentiment on Dalal Street had turned cautious earlier in the week following domestic inflation data. Consumer price inflation hovered close to the upper threshold of the central bank's tolerance band, while a sharper-than-expected wholesale price index (WPI) reading pushed domestic benchmark bond yields to multi-year highs. The RBI also tightened the daily cash reserve ratio (CRR) maintenance requirements to drain surplus liquidity, adding to initial market nervousness.
However, sentiment rebounded sharply after the central bank deployed decisive measures to shield the domestic currency:
• The central bank instituted a dedicated foreign exchange window for state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs), fulfilling their high dollar requirements off-market and insulating the spot currency market from bulk energy-import demand.
• Regulators tightened hedging norms and non-deliverable derivative contracts, requiring financial institutions to set aside a 20% cash reserve requirement on foreign-exchange derivative transactions exceeding $2 million to clamp down on currency speculation.
• The resulting pullback in dollar-rupee volatility lifted the domestic unit toward the 94.80–95.00 zone, sparking a relief rally across interest-rate-sensitive and large-cap equities.
Institutional Flows and Broader Market Performance
The currency stabilization triggered a notable moderation in foreign portfolio outflows. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers for the week at ₹8,991 crore, but the pace of selling decelerated considerably from the ₹30,294 crore offloaded in the previous week. On Friday, FIIs turned net buyers, injecting ₹1,166 crore into domestic equities.
Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided strong counter-support, recording net purchases of ₹7,813 crore over the week. On a month-to-date basis, cumulative DII buying of ₹48,168 crore has almost entirely absorbed FII selling worth ₹48,769 crore.
In broader markets, mid- and small-cap stocks saw mixed participation:
• The Nifty Midcap 100 index gained 0.58% across the week....

FPIs Pull Out ₹52,100 Crore from Equities in October as Global Headwinds Trigger Capital Flight
Category: Markets
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have intensified their selling in domestic equities, withdrawing ₹52,100 crore in October so far, according to data from depositories. The sustained sell-off comes on the back of elevated crude oil prices, a hardening US dollar, and climbing US Treasury yields, which continue to squeeze liquidity out of emerging markets.
The sharp October outflow follows a net withdrawal of ₹35,861 crore in September. While foreign funds had turned net buyers earlier in the quarter—pumping in ₹20,200 crore in July and ₹29,631 crore in August—that respite proved short-lived as global headwinds reignited selling pressure.
With the latest round of offloading, cumulative FPI outflows from Indian equities in calendar year 2026 have touched ₹3.12 trillion. This marks an almost two-fold increase compared to the ₹1.66 trillion pulled out during the entirety of 2025.
Drivers Behind the Sell-Off
Market analysts point to multiple external factors that have altered the risk-reward calculation for overseas funds:
• Rising US Bond Yields: The 10-year US Treasury yield has hovered above the 5.2% mark, offering foreign investors competitive risk-free returns in dollar-denominated assets and reducing the relative appeal of emerging market equities.
• Crude Oil Surge: Elevated crude prices, driven by supply risks in West Asia, continue to mount economic pressure on India’s import bill and trade deficit.
• North Asian Reallocation: Capital has increasingly rotated toward North Asian markets to participate in the artificial intelligence-led rally, where stock valuations appear comparatively cheaper.
• Hawkish Rate Expectations: Persistent inflation prints in the United States have stoked fears of extended restrictive monetary policy from the US Federal Reserve, reinforcing dollar strength.
Dheeraj Gaur, Chief Investment Strategy Officer at Choice Wealth, noted that foreign investors have continued their retreat amid the potent combination of high crude prices, a sturdy greenback, and sticky US inflation. Gaur highlighted that while North Asian markets are absorbing foreign capital due to AI-driven growth themes, high oil import costs pose challenges for the domestic macroeconomic backdrop.
Sector Trends and Silver Linings
The heavy foreign outflows have been led primarily by sharp cuts in major heavyweights, notably across the banking, financial services, and oil & gas spaces. However, FPI positioning has remained selective, with counter-trend buying seen in sectors such as healthcare and entertainment....

Bharti Airtel Launches Three Voice-Only Plans Ahead of TRAI Mandate Deadline
Category: Markets
Ahead of the regulatory deadline issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel has become the first domestic telecom operator to introduce dedicated voice-and-SMS prepaid recharge options devoid of bundled data services.
The new offerings arrive in response to the Telecom Consumer Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, notified by TRAI in September, which mandated that operators provide voice-and-SMS Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) matching validity periods of 30 days or less alongside a calendar-month option. Telecom providers were handed a 30-day window to comply, setting an enforcement deadline of October 21.
Details of Airtel’s Voice-Only Tariffs
The Sunil Mittal-led telecom major has rolled out three prepaid vouchers across its digital platforms:
• Rs 185 Plan: Comes with a validity of 28 days, offering unlimited local, STD, and roaming voice calls alongside 300 SMS.
• Rs 203 Plan: Carries a 30-day validity window, bundled with unlimited voice calls and 300 SMS.
• Rs 206 Plan: Provides a full calendar-month validity, renewing on the exact same date each month, packaged with unlimited voice calls and 300 SMS.
None of these newly introduced packs include mobile data allocations. While the daily cost works out to approximately Rs 6.60 to Rs 6.80 across the three vouchers, they provide non-data consumers with an entry point below higher-tier plans that force data bundling.
Regulatory Push and Consumer Demographics
The regulatory intervention follows extended representations from consumer advocacy organizations, which highlighted that India's sizable base of approximately 220 million feature-phone users was routinely forced to purchase mobile data allowances they could neither utilize nor access. According to consumer group estimates submitted during TRAI's consultation period, rural and feature-phone users were spending an estimated Rs 15,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore annually on unutilized bundled data.
Major telecom operators, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, had previously resisted the mandate during open-house consultations, citing implementation friction, potential risks of unsolicited commercial calls, and the broader push toward digital inclusion. TRAI, however, stood firm, requiring operators to match existing data voucher validities and offer proportional tariff relief.
Market and Investor Implications

Jio Platforms IPO to Give Telecom Business Standalone Financial Scorecard Beyond Reliance Group Filings
Category: Markets
For years, equity investors and telecom analysts tracking India's largest connectivity business had to unpack its metrics through the consolidated quarterly earnings reports of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). That corporate disclosure structure is set to shift fundamentally as Jio Platforms Limited prepares to enter the domestic primary market with India's largest-ever public offering.
Once Jio Platforms completes its listing on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE, the telecom and tech giant will publish standalone quarterly scorecards, providing public market participants with independent scrutiny over its digital operations, infrastructure expenditure, subscriber growth, and leverage.
A Separate Window on India's Telecom Leader
Since Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) launched commercial operations in 2016, its operational trajectory was housed inside RIL's wider consolidated books alongside oil-to-chemicals (O2C) operations, oil exploration, and retail networks. The impending listing changes how the company interacts with investors by establishing standalone accountability.
According to offer documents, Jio Platforms derives the overwhelming majority of its revenue and earnings from RJIL. In Fiscal 2026, RJIL contributed:
• Standalone revenue from operations of ₹1,28,871.4 crore, accounting for 87.74% of Jio Platforms' consolidated operational revenue of ₹1,46,885.3 crore.
• Standalone earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) of ₹72,354.4 crore, representing 94.88% of group consolidated EBITDA.
• Standalone profit after tax (PAT) of ₹28,173.2 crore, equal to 93.76% of Jio Platforms' consolidated PAT of ₹30,049.1 crore.
As an independently listed entity, metrics such as subscriber churn, network capital expenditure, spectrum liability commitments, and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) will be examined directly against listed peer Bharti Airtel rather than being submerged under conglomerate-wide numbers.
Issue Mechanics and Proceeds Deployment
The Jio Platforms initial public offering consists entirely of a fresh issue of up to 27 crore equity shares, with no Offer for Sale (OFS) from existing stakeholders. The price band has been fixed at ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, targeting an issue size of up to ₹30,213 crore and establishing an indicative post-issue equity valuation of roughly ₹10.3 lakh crore ($108 billion).
Key Allocation and Proceeds Highlights:
• Debt Deleveraging: Up to ₹27,500 crore from net proceeds has been designated specifically for the repayment or prepayment of outstanding borrowings at RJIL, which stood at ₹71,529 crore as of March 31, 2026.
• Shareholder Quota: Up to ₹2,500 crore worth of shares has been reserved for eligible individual and Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) shareholders of Reliance Industries....

Currency in Circulation Reaches Record ₹42.7 Trillion as Proposed 0.4% UPI Fee Stirs Merchant Shift to Cash
Category: Markets
India’s flagship digital payments network is facing an unexpected friction point as retail merchants resist new transaction levies, prompting an uptick in cash reliance across trade hubs. The debate centres on a framework to introduce a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR)—capped at ₹300 per transaction—on person-to-merchant (P2M) Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments exceeding ₹2,000.
Although the levy is designed to support the escalating maintenance and infrastructure expenses of the ecosystem, retail shopkeepers operating on wafer-thin margins are pushing back. Many are displaying "cash only" notices or actively splitting customer bills to avoid breaching the ₹2,000 ceiling.
Merchant Resistance and the Zero-MDR Dilemma
Since its rollout in 2016, UPI has transformed Indian commerce, processing roughly 242 billion transactions over the latest financial year. However, the zero-cost architecture that drove widespread adoption has become an expensive burden for payment infrastructure operators.
According to operator data, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)—collectively owned by retail banks—incurs approximately ₹200 billion ($2.1 billion) in annual network maintenance costs. Government budgetary subsidies, which stood at ₹20 billion for the current fiscal cycle, bridge only a fraction of that expenditure.
While policymakers emphasized that consumer transfers (person-to-person) and ticket sizes below ₹2,000 remain entirely fee-free, shopkeepers argue they cannot absorb transaction cuts:
• A national survey of 32,000 businesses conducted by LocalCircles revealed that 83% of merchants are unwilling to bear the proposed MDR costs.
• Regulated retailers, such as pharmacies selling medicines under capped Maximum Retail Prices (MRP), cannot mark up products to offset transaction fees.
• In essential and regulated segments such as railways, fuel, telecom, insurance, and agricultural inputs, a flat fee of ₹5 per transaction above ₹2,000 has been earmarked to minimize price disruption.
Following significant pushback from merchant associations, authorities postponed the initial mid-October rollout until after the festive season to avoid disrupting peak retail demand.
Cash Defies the Digital Boom
The pushback arrives at a time when physical currency holdings in India remain extraordinarily resilient. Despite eight years of digital payments expansion following the 2016 banknote withdrawal, data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) shows currency in circulation reached a record high of ₹42.7 trillion ($448 billion) at the end of September 2026.
Key macroeconomic trends underscore the persistence of physical money:
• Currency in circulation is now roughly 2.3 times higher than pre-demonetisation levels....

FSSAI Issues Show-Cause Notices to Nestle India and HUL Over Misleading Health Claims and Labelling Violations
Category: Markets
In an aggressive nationwide regulatory sweep, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued show-cause notices to fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market leaders Nestle India Limited and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL). The statutory food safety regulator flagged multiple popular health and nutritional products for deceptive advertising, non-compliant functional health claims, and missing mandatory package disclosures across retail and e-commerce channels.
The enforcement action comes amid heightened regulatory vigilance over packaged foods, infant nutrition, and dietary supplements, forcing consumer goods companies to defend scientific justifications for their health-oriented marketing campaigns.
Allegations Against Hindustan Unilever
The regulator singled out major offerings within HUL’s Horlicks portfolio, demanding explanations regarding promotional statements made on packaging and digital marketplaces:
• Horlicks Mother's Plus Kesar: The regulator cited potential violations of the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018. Promotional claims such as "Healthy Birth Weight" on the box and "For baby's healthy birth weight" in advertisements were deemed misleading for implying direct physiological health guarantees without necessary clearances.
• Horlicks Women's Plus Chocolate Nutrition Drink: FSSAI flagged several bold assertions, including "Nutrition for Strong Bones", "Clinically Proven to Help Improve Bone Strength in 6 Months", and "Improves Bone Health". The regulator noted that the phrase "healthy Muscles" breached regulations governing the specific use of the term "healthy".
• Deceptive "No Added Sugar" Label: The packaging claimed "No Added Sugar", which the regulator found potentially misleading given the presence of maltodextrin in the formulation. In addition, claims touting "100 per cent RDA of Calcium, Vitamin D & K2" failed to meet statutory guidelines.
HUL rejected the allegations, stating that its formulations adhere strictly to applicable food safety standards and that the company will submit necessary scientific and regulatory documentation to substantiate its claims within the stipulated time frame.
Violations Flagged at Nestle India
Nestle India was served notices regarding specialised medical and beverage offerings:
• Nestle Resource Renal Vanilla Flavour Powder: Formulated for the dietary management of individuals with chronic kidney disease, this product falls under the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, and Prebiotic and Probiotic Food) Regulations, 2022. The regulator pointed out that Nestle marketed the product without securing mandatory prior authorization. The product label also omitted the statutory vegetarian or non-vegetarian logo, violating packaging norms....

Fuel Exports to West from Refineries Processing Russian Crude Surge 43% to €1 Billion Led by Reliance
Category: Markets
Fuel exports to Western nations from refiners processing Russian crude oil experienced a sharp uptick in September. According to research released by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), sanction-imposing Western countries—including the European Union, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand—purchased refined oil products worth €1 billion ($1.2 billion) during the month. This reflects a 43% increase compared to August.
The report notes that approximately €295 million worth of the exported products were directly refined from Russian crude oil. Refineries based in India, Turkey, and Brunei accounted for the supply chain funneling these finished petroleum products to Western markets.
Breakdown of Western Buyers in September
The European Union remained the primary destination for these shipments, with member states consuming the largest proportion of refined products:
• European Union: €667 million
• Australia: €168 million
• United States: €154 million
• New Zealand: €19 million
The value of fuel shipments destined for European Union ports from refineries processing Russian oil jumped 80% month-on-month. Of the seven cargoes unloaded at EU ports during September, Italy received three, Romania imported two, while Spain and Cyprus took delivery of one cargo each. A single 104,000-tonne cargo of gasoil—commonly used as automotive diesel—dispatched from India was en route to Rotterdam at the time of the data compilation.
Reliance Industries' Jamnagar Complex Leads Outflows
India's private refining major, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), played a leading role in the trade flows. The company’s mega-refinery complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, supplied six out of the seven cargoes unloaded at European ports during September.
Jamnagar also represented the largest individual share of fuel exports to the United States among the observed refineries, delivering shipments valued at €122 million. According to the CREA tracker, Russian crude accounted for roughly 32% of Jamnagar’s total crude import intake between July and September.
Sanctions Framework and Regulatory Loopholes
The surge in trade comes despite the European Union's January 2026 ban on importing refined oil products derived from Russian crude oil. CREA noted that the enforcement regime contains exemptions for countries designated as net crude oil exporters. The think-tank pointed out that this carve-out creates a mechanism where complex export-oriented refineries can continue processing discounted Russian barrels for domestic integration or third-party re-export while moving equivalent refined volumes westward.

Moody's Revises Oyo Parent Prism Outlook to Positive Reaffirming B2 Corporate Family Rating
Category: Markets
Moody's Ratings has revised the credit outlook on travel tech unicorn OYO's parent company, Prism (formerly known as Oravel Stays Limited), to positive from stable, while reaffirming its B2 corporate family rating (CFR).
The revision comes at a crucial juncture as the hospitality platform prepares for a domestic initial public offering (IPO), having submitted confidential draft red herring prospectus papers with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to raise up to ₹6,650 crore.
Strong Cash Flows and Deleveraging Underpin Upgrade
According to Moody’s, the positive outlook signals expectations of continued financial turnaround and operational expansion over the medium term.
"The positive outlook reflects our expectation that OYO (formerly Oravel Stays) will sustain stronger earnings and free cash flow generation over the next 12-18 months, supporting further deleveraging while maintaining very good liquidity," said Sweta Patodia, Assistant Vice President and lead analyst for OYO at Moody's Ratings.
Patodia added that the affirmation of the B2 CFR reflects OYO's leading position in the budget accommodation sector across its key operating markets, as well as the geographic diversification of its operations spanning India, Europe, and the United States.
Key Drivers Behind Credit Profile Improvement
Moody's evaluation aligns with a series of structural improvements in the company's financial profile over the past two fiscal years:
• Expanding Global Footprint: The consolidation of international assets, including the acquisition of US-based economy lodging operator G6 Hospitality (parent of Motel 6) and European vacation rentals, has diversified OYO's revenue mix into developed markets.
• Accelerating EBITDA and Margins: OYO has demonstrated a sharper focus on bottom-line profitability, driven by higher gross booking value per storefront and the operating leverage inherent in its asset-light platform.
• Debt Reduction and Refinancing: The company previously refinanced its existing debt maturities via an underwritten senior secured term loan facility via its wholly owned subsidiary Oravel Stays Singapore Pte Ltd, alleviating near-term liquidity pressure and lowering its annual interest outflow.
• IPO-Linked Debt Retirement: A substantial portion of the proposed ₹6,650 crore IPO fresh issue proceeds has been earmarked for paying down outstanding debt, which rating agencies estimate will push gross leverage ratios significantly lower.
Significance for Indian Market Investors
The rating action by Moody's closely follows a similar move by Fitch Ratings, which also recently revised its long-term outlook on Prism to positive....

OMCs Exclude Sugar Feedstocks from 2026-27 Ethanol Tender and Slash Maize Procurement Price
Category: Markets
In a major recalibration of India's biofuel procurement framework, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have completely excluded primary sugar feedstocks from their fresh ethanol procurement tender for the 2026-27 supply year. Floating the quantity-bid tender on October 16 on behalf of the OMC consortium, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) announced a procurement target of approximately 11 billion litres (1,100 crore litres) of ethanol for the cycle spanning November 1, 2026, to October 31, 2027.
Alongside the freeze on sugar-based supplies, the government curtailed incentives for grain distillers, bringing down the procurement price of maize-derived ethanol by Rs 3 per litre.
Zero Sugar Diversion Mandate
The tender document specifies that the Government of India has ordered sugar diversion toward ethanol production to be curtailed entirely to zero for the upcoming ethanol supply year (ESY) 2026-27. Consequently, OMCs have invited no bids for ethanol manufactured from sugarcane juice, whole sugar, sugar syrup, or B-heavy molasses.
The participating public sector refiners include:
• Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)
• Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)
• Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)
• Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL)
• Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL)
The sudden exclusion of B-heavy molasses and cane syrup comes against the backdrop of rising domestic sweetener prices and output concerns driven by erratic monsoon rains across primary cane-growing states, notably Maharashtra and Karnataka. The central government has prioritised safeguarding retail availability and containing food inflation over biofuel blending inputs.
Permitted Feedstocks and Price Revisions
While front-line cane products have been barred, distilleries can still offer ethanol produced from C-heavy molasses, the low-sugar byproduct of conventional refining. To make up the targeted 11 billion litres needed for the nationwide 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) mandate, procurement has been redirected toward grain-based alternatives.
The tender outlines the following base pricing structure across eligible feedstocks:
• Maize (Corn): Basic price of Rs 66.07 per litre with an additional incentive of Rs 2.79 per litre, taking the net procurement price to Rs 68.86 per litre (excluding GST and transportation). The incentive previously stood at Rs 5.79 per litre, meaning effective realisations have dropped from Rs 71.86 per litre.
• Damaged Food Grains: Basic procurement price fixed at Rs 64.00 per litre.
• Surplus FCI Rice: Fixed at a basic rate of Rs 60.32 per litre.
• C-Heavy Molasses: Basic rate maintained at Rs 57.97 per litre....
