EPL Ltd Reports Insider Trading and Contra-Trade Code Breach by Senior Executive
Category: Markets
Packaging solutions major EPL Limited (formerly Essel Propack Limited) has reported an insider trading violation involving one of its senior executives to the stock exchanges, in compliance with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Prohibition of Insider Trading) Regulations, 2015.
The company disclosed that Rajiv Hargopal Verma, President – Technology and Printing, who qualifies as a "Designated Person" under the company’s internal code of conduct, engaged in securities transactions without securing prior approvals and breached mandatory trading restrictions.
Details of the Trading Violations
According to regulatory filings submitted to the BSE and NSE, the violations occurred over two separate transactions between August and September 2026:
• Unauthorized Share Sale: On August 19, 2026, the executive disposed of 6,686 equity shares without obtaining pre-clearance from the company’s compliance officer.
• Unauthorized Share Purchase: On September 1, 2026, the executive acquired 1,000 equity shares, again without securing mandatory pre-clearance.
• Contra-Trade Breach: The purchase executed on September 1, 2026, fell within the six-month statutory cooling-off window following the sale on August 19, 2026, triggering a contra-trade violation under SEBI PIT regulations.
Under SEBI guidelines, designated persons in listed companies are barred from executing opposite transactions (contra-trades) in the company's equity within six months of any prior transaction, regardless of whether unpublished price-sensitive information (UPSI) was held.
Internal Findings and Regulatory Action
EPL Limited initiated an internal inquiry to review the circumstances surrounding the transactions. The review concluded that the transactions were inadvertent administrative oversights rather than deliberate attempts to profit from unpublished information.
Key determinations from the company's internal review:
• No Disgorgement Required: The transactions resulted in neither realized profits nor avoided losses for the executive, eliminating the requirement to deposit disgorged gains into SEBI’s Investor Protection and Education Fund (IPEF).
• Disciplinary Action: The company issued a formal letter of caution to the executive, advising strict adherence to trading protocols and pre-clearance rules in the future.
• Clean History: Filings noted that no previous violations had been recorded against the executive since the last financial year, and no monetary fine was imposed internally.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra Rebuts Rupee Pessimism, Emphasises Strong External Fundamentals
Category: Markets
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra dismissed the prevailing gloom in currency markets, asserting that market participants are being overly pessimistic about the rupee. In an interview with Moneycontrol, Malhotra reaffirmed his optimism about India's medium- and long-term balance of payments (BoP) position, noting that underlying macroeconomic fundamentals remain sound even as global headwinds exert pressure on emerging market currencies.
“The exchange rate is primarily a function of demand and supply. Markets today appear to be overly pessimistic, and that is why I said their assessment could be irrational in the short run,” Malhotra stated. He reiterated that the RBI does not defend any predetermined level or band for the rupee, allowing market forces to drive price discovery while intervening strictly to prevent disorderly moves and excessive volatility.
Cracking Down on Intra-Day Speculation
The Governor’s remarks follow a series of operational measures introduced by the central bank on October 10 aimed at curbing one-sided bets in the foreign exchange market. Addressing concerns that these regulatory curbs amount to capital controls, Malhotra clarified that the actions were specifically designed to discourage reckless speculative behavior rather than restrict genuine corporate hedging.
Data examined by the banking regulator indicated an unusually high churn in derivatives and spot transactions, prompting the regulatory pushback:
• A very high proportion of foreign exchange trades were being cancelled and rebooked on the exact same day.
• In several instances, approximately one-third of all contract volumes were closed or cancelled on the day of entry.
• Market participants were treating currency trades with speculative intraday tactics akin to equity market trading rather than using foreign exchange contracts for risk mitigation and commercial hedging.
Following the central bank's measures, the rupee showed signs of stabilization, opening at 95.18 against the US dollar compared to the prior session's close of 95.77, before settling around 95.28 per dollar.
External Buffers and Valuation Metrics
Defending the intrinsic strength of the domestic currency, Malhotra pointed to multiple balance sheet indicators suggesting that the rupee is far from fundamentally weak. Drawing on standard valuation metrics such as the Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER), the Governor noted that the currency is not overvalued and, by several models, trades at an undervalued level.
Key Pillars Supporting India’s External Sector:
• Inward Remittances: Inflows from the Indian diaspora continue to demonstrate strong resilience, providing steady foreign currency liquidity....

India Retail Inflation Climbs to 5.54% in September as Food Prices Surge
Category: Markets
India's retail inflation accelerated significantly in September, climbing to 5.54% year-on-year compared to 4.83% in August, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The 71-basis-point sequential increase pushed headline consumer inflation to a 23-month high, marking the fourth straight month where the print has remained above the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) medium-term target of 4.0%.
The sharp uptick brings consumer inflation uncomfortably close to the central bank's upper tolerance band of 6.0%, intensifying discussions across domestic financial markets about the trajectory of monetary tightening.
Food Prices Drive Headline Numbers
The surge in headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) numbers was predominantly fueled by soaring food costs. The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) escalated to 7.74% in September, surging 177 basis points from 5.97% recorded in August.
Key drivers within the food basket included:
• Vegetable Spikes: Onion inflation recorded a steep surge to 108.09% in September compared to 48.78% in August.
• Spices and Condiments: Garlic inflation accelerated further to 54.62% during the month, up from 43.60% in August.
• Rural Pressures: Rural food inflation touched 8.06% in September compared to 6.17% in the previous month, taking overall rural inflation to 6.08%.
• Urban Trends: Urban food inflation climbed to 7.18% from 5.64% in August, lifting urban headline inflation to 4.88%.
The divergence shows that price pressures are increasingly pinching rural households, where food expenditure accounts for a higher share of disposable income.
Monetary Policy Outlook: Is Another Rate Hike Coming?
The September print follows the Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) recent move to raise the benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%—its first interest rate hike since February 2023. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra recently highlighted that inflation risks are no longer benign, pointing to supply-chain bottlenecks, sub-par monsoon replenishment affecting winter sowing, and elevated crude oil prices amid West Asia geopolitical tensions.
The central bank previously revised its FY27 CPI inflation projection upward to 5.2%, expecting inflation to average nearly 5.8% across the next three quarters.
Economists remain divided on whether the MPC will hike rates again at its upcoming meeting in December:
• The Case for Further Tightening: Economists such as Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist at ICRA, noted that risks remain tilted to the upside due to dismal late-monsoon trends, potential rabi crop disruptions, and sticky international crude oil prices, which could make another 25-basis-point hike in December likely....

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra Rebuts Rupee Pessimism Citing Resilient External Sector and Curbs Forex Speculation
Category: Markets
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has pushed back against market gloom regarding the domestic currency, asserting that financial markets have become unduly pessimistic about the rupee despite India’s resilient external position. In an interview with Moneycontrol, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra underscored that India's balance of payments remains on solid footing, supported by durable underlying inflows.
The Governor’s comments arrive on the heels of the central bank's weekend move to tighten rules governing foreign exchange transactions to stamp out non-genuine and excessive speculative positioning.
Clamping Down on Intraday Currency Speculation
Explaining the rationale behind the RBI’s recent policy intervention, Malhotra pointed out that trading patterns in the domestic foreign exchange market had displayed unusual behavior rather than genuine commercial hedging.
“Over the past few months, we have observed a very high proportion of trades being cancelled and rebooked on the same day,” Malhotra noted. “In some cases, about one-third of trades were closed or cancelled on the day they were entered into.”
The new regulatory measures are specifically aimed at ensuring market activity is anchored in authentic hedging requirements:
• Deterring one-sided speculative wagers and high-frequency cancellation-rebooking patterns in spot and forward segments.
• Fostering an orderly market mechanism while curbing speculative trades that trigger intraday foreign exchange distortion.
• Preserving liquidity access for corporate hedgers and legitimate foreign exchange participants without imposing artificial barriers.
Following the central bank's move, the domestic currency rebounded sharply, trading at 95.77 against the US dollar on Monday before settling around 95.28 on Tuesday.
No Fixed Exchange Rate Target
The Governor reaffirmed the RBI’s longstanding operating framework, clarifying that the monetary authority does not defend any predetermined exchange rate or narrow price band. Instead, the exchange rate remains determined by market forces, with the central bank intervening exclusively to dampen excessive and abnormal volatility.
“The RBI's objective is to ensure orderly movements and prevent excessive speculation, rather than influence the rupee towards a predetermined level,” Malhotra explained.
He added that while financial markets can occasionally turn irrational and misprice assets over the short run, long-term trends reflect economic reality. Malhotra highlighted that, based on several benchmarks—including the Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER)—the rupee is not overvalued and may in fact be undervalued relative to its medium-term fundamentals.
Resilient External Fundamentals
Addressing broader concerns over external vulnerability, the RBI chief emphasized that India's external accounts possess significant durability.
