Hyundai Motor Group Commits $15.5 Billion Investment in India by 2032 to Scale Manufacturing and R&D

Category: Markets

In one of the largest corporate capital commitments ever made to the Indian automotive sector, South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled a strategic investment program worth $15.5 billion (approximately ₹1.47 lakh crore) spanning from 2026 through 2032.

The decision was finalized after a meeting between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The initiative positions India as a central pillar for the automotive conglomerate’s global manufacturing footprint, export strategies, and emerging market expansion.

Strategic Capital Allocation Across Key Verticals

The seven-year investment framework will be executed through a dedicated investment entity in India designed to coordinate capital deployment, local vendor integration, and strategic mobility partnerships.

The group plans to channel funds into several foundational growth areas:

• Manufacturing Capacity Expansion: Hyundai will scale vehicle production lines across Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) and Kia India Pvt. Limited to meet surging domestic demand and cement India's status as a major export gateway.

• Next-Generation R&D: Approximately $700 million will be allocated directly toward upgrading India's research and development infrastructure, including the setup of a dedicated vehicle testing track and advanced engineering programs.

• Supply Chain & Localization: Extensive funding will be directed to domestic auto-component suppliers to localize parts sourcing, reduce import reliance, and support technology transfer.

• New Mobility Ecosystems: Capital will support electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, vehicle recycling initiatives, startup partnerships, and automotive financing solutions.

Context and Market Relevance for Indian Investors

The announcement marks Hyundai’s largest-ever capital commitment to an emerging economy. It arrives as India cements its position as the world's third-largest passenger vehicle market, protected by tariffs and structural incentives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme that encourage local value addition.

The aggressive ramp-up also builds on Hyundai Motor India’s historic ₹27,870 crore initial public offering in October 2024. By scaling operational infrastructure and bringing next-generation vehicle architectures to local production lines, Hyundai aims to defend and expand its market share amid intensifying competition in the passenger vehicle and EV segments.

Implications for Auto Ancillaries and Employment

Hyundai Motor Group currently employs more than 24,000 people in India. The multi-year plan is slated to create thousands of skilled jobs across manufacturing, engineering design, software development, and tier-1 and tier-2 vendor supply chains....

Bank of Baroda Shares Fall 3% After NMC Healthcare Founder B.R. Shetty Files $15 Billion Lawsuit

Category: Markets

Shares of state-run lender Bank of Baroda declined by up to 3% in trading on Wednesday, October 14, following reports that Bavaguthu Raghuram (B.R.) Shetty, the founder of NMC Healthcare and UAE Exchange, has approached the Bombay High Court seeking $15 billion (over ₹1.25 lakh crore) in damages.

The legal challenge triggered swift selling pressure across domestic trading desks as market participants weighed the reputational and financial implications of the enormous claim against the public sector bank.

Breakdown of the $15 Billion Lawsuit

Shetty’s lawsuit names 26 defendants, comprising Bank of Baroda, 10 of its current and former officers, former senior executives of NMC Healthcare and UAE Exchange—including Prasanth Manghat and Promoth Manghat—along with their associates and two Indian corporate entities, Avitis Super Speciality Hospitals Pvt. Ltd and SMARD Building Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

The compensation sought in the plaint includes:

• Direct Damages: $5 billion against the defendants jointly and severally for alleged fraud, negligence, and diversion of funds.

• Consequential Losses: $5 billion jointly and severally for lost business opportunities and commercial disruption.

• Reputational Harm: $5 billion sought solely from Bank of Baroda for loss of goodwill, aggravated by actions such as the issuance of a lookout circular against Shetty.

• Interest Claims: Annual interest at the rate of 18% on the primary $10 billion claim.

In his petition, Shetty alleges that Bank of Baroda officials actively colluded with former executives to route funds through unauthorized accounts, ignored over 100 anti-money laundering red flags, and processed transactions based on forged signatures and instructions. He contends that he relinquished executive control of the group companies years before the collapse and was improperly held liable on personal guarantees that bore forged signatures.

Bank of Baroda Responds via Exchange Filing

In response to news reports surrounding the legal action, Bank of Baroda submitted a clarification to the stock exchanges (BSE and NSE) on October 14, asserting that it had not been formally served with the court papers.

The bank stated:

"The Bank has not been served with such a suit and cannot comment on the contents of pleadings which are untested in court. If and when the Bank is served, the Bank will defend the suit firmly and take all steps necessary to protect its interests."...

The rally came as the company's financial print met analyst projections on revenue and margins amid challenging conditions across global technology and engineering research markets.

Key Earnings Highlights

The design and engineering services provider reported steady growth across top-line and operating metrics:

• Revenue from Operations: Revenue rose 15% year-on-year and 3.4% sequentially to ₹1,056 crore, up from ₹918 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year and ₹1,021 crore in Q1. Constant-currency revenue increased 2.3% quarter-on-quarter.

• Net Profit: Profit after tax (PAT) rose 10% year-on-year to ₹170.3 crore, compared to ₹155 crore a year earlier, remaining broadly flat quarter-on-quarter against ₹170.6 crore.

• Operating Profitability: Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) increased 7.3% sequentially to ₹207.8 crore from ₹193.7 crore in Q1. EBIT margin widened by 70 basis points to 19.7% from 19% in the preceding quarter.

• EBITDA Performance: Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) reached ₹231.4 crore, delivering an EBITDA margin expansion of 70 basis points sequentially to 21.9%.

Segmental Performance and Management Commentary

Software Development and Services (SDS), the company’s primary revenue driver, contributed ₹1,027.87 crore during the quarter, while Systems Integration and Support services accounted for ₹27.79 crore. Total segment results increased to ₹319.36 crore from ₹298.45 crore in the prior quarter.

Within SDS, the Transportation vertical accounted for 55.3% of division revenues, posting 2.0% sequential constant-currency growth and 9.4% year-on-year expansion, supported by traction in adjacent sectors such as aerospace.

Commenting on the quarterly operational performance, Manoj Raghavan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Elxsi, noted that delivery excellence helped expand EBITDA margins by 70 basis points quarter-on-quarter despite absorbing the financial impact of the annual wage revision.

Brokerage Sentiment Remains Divided

Despite the positive market reaction, domestic and foreign brokerages retained cautious stances due to current valuation multiples and demand headwinds in select overseas markets:

• Morgan Stanley: Maintained an 'Underweight' rating with a target price of ₹3,400 per share. While acknowledging that revenue and margins beat estimates, the brokerage noted that third-quarter performance is seasonally softer and current valuations remain elevated....

Bank of Baroda Shares Slide 3% After BR Shetty Files $15 Billion Lawsuit in Bombay High Court

Category: Markets

Shares of state-owned Bank of Baroda dropped as much as 3% on Wednesday morning, dragging the lender among the prominent losers on benchmark indices after Indian-origin tycoon and NMC Healthcare founder B.R. Shetty filed a staggering $15 billion (approximately ₹1.32 lakh crore) damages lawsuit against the bank and 25 other co-defendants in the Bombay High Court.

The legal action stems from the high-profile collapse of Shetty’s West Asia-focused healthcare and remittance empire, including NMC Healthcare and UAE Exchange.

Anatomy of the $15 Billion Plaint

According to court filings submitted in Mumbai, Shetty has accused Bank of Baroda and former corporate executives of colluding to divert corporate funds, conceal financial liabilities, and subject him to liabilities based on loan guarantees bearing forged signatures.

The damages claimed by Shetty are structured across three primary heads:

• Direct damages: $5 billion sought jointly and severally from the defendants for alleged fraud, negligence, and siphoning of capital.

• Consequential damages: $5 billion sought jointly and severally, accompanied by an interest demand pegged at 18% per annum.

• Reputational damages: An additional $5 billion sought exclusively from Bank of Baroda to compensate for irreparable harm to personal reputation and commercial goodwill, including fallout from look-out circulars (LOCs) initiated against him.

The suit names Bank of Baroda, 10 of its current and former officers, former NMC and Finablr/UAE Exchange executives Prasanth Manghat and Promoth Manghat, their associates, and Indian entities including Avitis Super Speciality Hospitals and SMARD Building Solutions. Shetty claimed that he relinquished executive control of the business entities in 2017 and discovered only in 2020 that unauthorized transactions and forged paperwork were routed through his corporate and personal accounts.

Bank of Baroda Vows Firm Legal Defense

Responding to market queries, Bank of Baroda informed the stock exchanges that it had not been formally served with the court documents and dismissed the untested pleadings.

"The Bank has not been served with such a suit and cannot comment on the contents of pleadings which are untested in court. If and when the Bank is served, the Bank will defend the suit firmly and take all steps necessary to protect its interests," the lender stated in an exchange notification....

Jio Platforms Looming Rs 37700 Crore Issue Redefines Indias Mega IPO League as Primary Market Scales New Peaks

Category: Markets

The Indian primary market is witnessing a structural transformation in deal sizes, evolving from an era where a ₹15,000-crore offering was a once-in-a-decade anomaly to an environment capable of absorbing multiple mega-issues exceeding ₹10,000 crore within single market cycles.

At the vanguard of this expansion is Jio Platforms, the digital and telecom flagship of Reliance Industries, which is lining up an unprecedented public offering estimated at ₹37,700 crore ($4 billion). If completed at this scale, the offering will decisively displace Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,859-crore landmark issue to claim the mantle of the largest IPO in Indian capital market history.

The Mega-Issue Hierarchy

The updated league table of India's largest public offerings reflects an expanding domestic capital pool, backed by robust institutional liquidity and steady systematic investment inflows from retail participants.

India's Top 10 Largest Public Offerings:

• Jio Platforms: ~₹37,700 crore (Upcoming)

• Hyundai Motor India: ₹27,859 crore

• National Stock Exchange (NSE): ₹22,563 crore

• Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC): ₹20,557 crore

• Paytm (One97 Communications): ₹18,300 crore

• Tata Capital: ₹15,512 crore

• Coal India: ₹15,199 crore

• HDB Financial Services: ₹12,500 crore

• LG Electronics India: ₹11,607 crore

• Swiggy: ₹11,327 crore

The Shift from Disinvestment to Corporate Giants

Historically, landmark Indian issues were driven primarily by sovereign divestments or public sector undertakers. Coal India’s ₹15,199-crore listing in October 2010 held the record for the nation’s largest IPO for over a decade. When the government offloaded a 3.5% stake in state insurer LIC in May 2022 to raise ₹20,557 crore, it underscored the state's reliance on primary markets to monetize marquee assets.

However, the recent wave marks a definitive pivot toward multinational subsidiaries, conglomerates, and top-tier financial institutions:
1. Multinational Monetization: Global giants like Hyundai Motor Company and LG Electronics have unlocked deep valuations in their Indian arms, capitalizing on India's premium consumer markets.
2. Regulatory Mandates: Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) classified in the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) "Upper Layer"—including HDB Financial Services (₹12,500 crore) and Tata Capital (₹15,512 crore)—have advanced listing timelines to satisfy central bank governance criteria.
3. Market Infrastructure: The long-anticipated listing of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) at ₹22,563 crore creates an equity benchmark for domestic exchange infrastructure.

Valuation Realities: The Listing-Day Paradox

For Indian retail and high-net-worth investors, headline deal volume has rarely guaranteed instant listing rewards.

A critical pattern across India's largest issues reveals significant post-listing divergence:...

RBI Cracks Down on Importer Hedging with Tougher Forex Derivative Rules and 20% Reserve Mandate

Category: Markets

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has placed corporate importers squarely in its regulatory crosshairs, moving aggressively to contain one-sided currency hedging bets that exacerbated the rupee's slide toward record lows. Amid widening geopolitical tensions, elevated crude oil prices, and sustained foreign portfolio outflows, corporate treasuries had rushed into forward markets to hoard dollars, creating a severe demand-supply imbalance that left the Indian currency reeling near the 97-per-dollar mark.

To stem what officials viewed as self-fulfilling panic and speculative excess, the central bank rolled out a stringent package of regulatory interventions targeting import-related derivatives and open-market dollar bidding.

Key Regulatory Measures Imposed by the RBI:

• 20% Foreign Exchange Risk Reserve: Authorised dealer banks must now maintain a daily cash reserve with the RBI equivalent to 20% of the rupee value of each foreign exchange derivative contract exceeding $2 million entered into for import-related current account transactions. This significantly increases bank funding costs and directly elevates hedging expenses for large corporate buyers.

• Slashing Document-Free Limits: The threshold allowing market participants to enter foreign exchange derivative contracts without producing underlying commercial documentation was drastically reduced to $5 million from $100 million, curtailing speculative positions disguised as corporate hedges.

• Ban on Rebooking Cancelled Contracts: The central bank prohibited authorised dealers from permitting clients to rebook cancelled rupee derivative contracts, shutting down strategies where market players repeatedly traded and reset forward positions to capitalize on intraday volatility.

• Special OMC Dollar Window: A dedicated direct window was instituted for state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs)—the largest single source of dollar outflows in India—taking their persistent spot dollar bids out of the regular interbank forex market.

Market Reaction and Domestic Relief

The clampdown immediately triggered a relief rally for the Indian currency. After touching an intra-day low near 96.78 against the greenback, the rupee posted its steepest single-day gain in over six months, surging nearly 100 paise to close around 95.78 before testing 94.96 in following sessions.

By disincentivizing companies from forward-booking unnecessary greenback reserves months ahead of settlement schedules, forward premiums began to ease. Previously, importers had built record hedges while exporters sat on the sidelines awaiting further currency depreciation, exacerbating systemic dollar scarcity....

Rupee Gains 97 Paise Against US Dollar as RBI Rolls Out Aggressive Forex Stabilization Measures

Category: Markets

The Indian rupee posted a sharp single-day rebound against the US dollar, surging 97 paise or nearly 1% at the start of trade to reach 95.76 per dollar. The relief rally followed a string of decisive weekend measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) designed to redirect corporate dollar demand away from the spot market and halt speculative pressure on the domestic currency.

Prior to the central bank's intervention, the currency had ended the previous session at 96.73 per dollar, having hovered uncomfortably close to its record low of 96.96. Despite the rebound, the domestic currency remains down more than 6% on a year-to-date basis amid persistent headwinds.

Key RBI Intervention Measures

To counter the speculative spiral in the foreign exchange market, the RBI introduced structural and operational restrictions under its October directives:

• Dedicated Dollar Window for OMCs: The central bank will meet the daily dollar demand of the country's three state-run oil marketing companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL)—directly via designated banks, isolating large crude oil import transactions from spot market liquidity.

• Curbing Derivative Positions: Authorized dealers are prohibited from rebooking cancelled rupee-linked foreign exchange derivative contracts, preventing speculative hedging loops.

• Lowering Unhedged Thresholds: The exposure limit for undertaking foreign exchange derivative transactions without establishing underlying operational exposure was slashed to $5 million from $100 million across authorized dealers and stock exchanges.

• Foreign Exchange Risk Reserve (FERR): Banks are required to maintain a 20% cash reserve with the RBI against designated forex derivative contracts, making depreciation bets significantly more expensive.

These actions followed the RBI's benchmark repo rate hike of 25 basis points to 5.50% and a policy stance shift to calibrated tightening aimed at addressing elevated import costs and inflation risks.

Market Outlook and Sectoral Impact

Speaking to Business Today TV, Gaurav Sharma, Vice President and Head of Research at Globe Capital, highlighted the diverging impact that currency movements will have across broader market segments. A recovery in the rupee offers immediate respite to import-heavy sectors, softening input costs for manufacturing and domestic industries that rely heavily on imported feedstock.

Conversely, export-oriented pockets such as information technology (IT) and pharmaceuticals may face marginal headwinds on dollar-denominated revenue realizations if the rupee maintains its upward momentum.

MSETCL Appoints Six Investment Banks for Planned Initial Public Offering of Up to 800 Million Dollars

Category: Markets

Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL), commercially known as MahaTransco, has selected six investment banks to steer its planned initial public offering (IPO) that could raise up to $800 million (approximately ₹6,700 crore to ₹10,000 crore). The proposed share sale is expected to hit the primary market by June 2027, subject to requisite approvals.

The mandate sees Axis Capital appointed as a lead book-running manager, alongside a syndicate of financial institutions including SBI Capital Markets, CLSA, and Bank of Baroda.

Deal Structure and Valuation Metrics

The planned transaction is designed as a composite equity offering combining a fresh issue of shares with an Offer for Sale (OFS):

• Fresh Equity Issuance: Capital mobilized through new shares will go directly toward funding capital expenditure and strengthening regional grid capacity.

• Offer for Sale (OFS): The Government of Maharashtra, through apex holding company MSEB Holding Company Limited, will monetize a portion of its equity holding.

• Valuation Expectations: Market sources indicate that the utility is looking at an estimated equity valuation between ₹40,000 crore and ₹50,000 crore at the time of the offering.

Operational Scale and Grid Footprint

Wholly owned by MSEB Holding Company Limited, MSETCL serves as the state-designated transmission utility and operates the transmission infrastructure backbone for Maharashtra.

Key operational highlights include:

• A network encompassing over 51,500 circuit kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines.

• Over 740 extra-high-voltage substations spread across the state.

• Operational revenue of ₹6,554 crore in FY25 alongside a net profit of ₹1,883 crore.

• An authorized share capital base of ₹15,000 crore, backed by a paid-up capital of ₹8,984 crore.

Significance for Indian Energy Markets

While central public sector undertakings such as Power Grid Corporation of India and NTPC have been listed on the National Stock Exchange and BSE for years, state-level utilities have remained largely absent from public bourses.

MahaTransco's move is part of a broader wave of state-backed infrastructure monetization. The Maharashtra government is simultaneously preparing an IPO for power distributor Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL/Mahavitaran), and other states like Bihar have initiated advisory processes for their respective transmission arms.

As India scales up transmission networks to connect massive renewable capacity additions, MSETCL's public listing will offer institutional and retail investors a new play on domestic power infrastructure growth....

10-Year Indian Benchmark Bond Yield Surges to 7.41% as Crude Nears $107 and RBI Signals Tightening

Category: Markets

Indian government bonds faced intense selling pressure in morning trade on Wednesday as a fresh jump in international crude oil prices and hawkish remarks from Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra prompted market participants to pare down bond holdings.

The yield on the liquid 10-year benchmark 6.94% 2036 bond traded at 7.3886% around 9:45 a.m. IST, up from Tuesday’s close of 7.3655%. In early trades, the yield spiked to 7.4112%—touching its highest level since March 2023. The benchmark yield has gained more than 20 basis points since the central bank tightened monetary policy last week. Yields move inversely to bond prices.

Crude Oil Rally Re-ignites Inflation Risks

The primary catalyst for Wednesday's early bond sell-off was a sustained increase in international energy prices. Brent crude traded around $107 per barrel in Asian trading hours following supply disruption concerns sparked by heightened hostilities involving Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi Arabia.

For India, which relies on imports for over 85% of its crude requirements, elevated oil prices pose a direct threat to the current account balance, currency stability, and headline inflation. With retail consumer price index (CPI) inflation already quickening to 5.54% in September, traders fear imported fuel inflation could breach the RBI's upper tolerance band of 6% in the coming prints.

Hawkish Central Bank Signals Keep Traders on Edge

Adding to the cautious mood were remarks by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. In a media interview on Tuesday, Malhotra remarked that while the central bank does not generally deploy monetary policy solely to safeguard financial stability, the two mandates cannot be treated as entirely separate.

The statement reaffirmed expectations that the central bank remains focused on leaning against price pressures and managing currency volatility, even if it entails tighter domestic liquidity conditions.

Last week, the RBI Monetary Policy Committee raised the key repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and shifted its policy stance from "neutral" to "calibrated tightening," signalling that the path forward will involve either additional rate hikes or extended pauses rather than easing.

Tighter Liquidity Clampdown Weighs on Curve

The upward pressure on yields has been reinforced by administrative liquidity measures instituted by Mint Street:

• Open Market Operations: The RBI scheduled an open market sale of ₹25,000 crore (250 billion rupees) of government securities to actively mop up surplus banking cash....

In an escalating dispute at the apex of India's largest conglomerate, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) Chairman Noel Tata and his son, trustee Neville Tata, have moved the Bombay High Court and the Mumbai City Civil Court by filing caveats to safeguard their positions against any unilateral legal orders.

The legal filings, submitted under Section 148A of the Code of Civil Procedure, act as a precautionary measure. They ensure that the courts cannot pass any interim or ex-parte orders against Noel Tata and Neville Tata without notifying them and giving them an opportunity to present their side of the dispute.

The Legal Countermove

The court records identify Noel Tata and Neville Tata as caveators, while listing fellow trustees Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, Darius Khambata, and Bhaskar Bhat as caveatees. Sources close to the trusts indicated that while Srinivasan and Singh are actively contesting the leadership's decisions, the inclusion of senior counsel Darius Khambata and former Titan managing director Bhaskar Bhat is purely procedural, as trust-related litigation generally requires naming all serving trustees as parties. Both Khambata and Bhat have previously backed Noel Tata's position in communications addressed to the dissenting trustees.

The move to approach Mumbai's civil courts follows multiple caveats already lodged by Noel Tata and Neville Tata before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner. That regulatory body had previously received formal petitions from Venu Srinivasan, Vice Chairman of SDTT, and trustee Vijay Singh. The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner recently granted SDTT, Noel Tata, and Neville Tata an extension until October 19 to submit their responses to the allegations, extending beyond the previous deadline of October 12.

Friction Over Governance and Appointments

The root of the boardroom confrontation lies in internal fissures within the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, which represents the largest philanthropic vehicle holding equity in Tata Sons Pvt. Ltd., the group holding company.

Key areas of disagreement include:

• Trustee Appointments: Srinivasan and Singh have formally challenged the induction of Neville Tata as a trustee and raised questions over the status and validity of Noel Tata's position as a perpetual trustee under Maharashtra Public Trusts Act norms.

• Voting and Board Resolutions: Disagreements arose over specific circular resolutions circulated within the trust, which opposing trustees argued were intended to neutralize independent voting within the philanthropic boards....

IDBI Bank Shares Jump Nearly 13% Defying Weak Market Ahead of Q2 Results

Category: Markets

Shares of IDBI Bank Ltd witnessed aggressive buying on Wednesday, rallying nearly 13% in morning trade and defying a cautious, flat-to-negative tone in the broader domestic equity markets.

The stock opened at Rs 84.32 on the BSE against its previous close of Rs 82.92, rapidly surging to an intraday peak of Rs 93.62. The sharp upmove made IDBI Bank one of the top performers across the banking pack, even as the benchmark BSE Sensex slipped nearly 0.20% in morning action before hovering around the 73,095 mark.

Pre-Earnings Optimism Drives Bull Run

Market sentiment around IDBI Bank turned decisively bullish ahead of its upcoming board meeting scheduled for October 17. The bank announced that its Board of Directors will meet to consider and approve the unaudited financial results for the quarter and half-year ended September 30, subject to a limited review by statutory auditors.

Investor expectations have been buoyed by the lender's provisional quarterly update:

• Total Business: Grew 18% year-on-year to approximately Rs 6.27 lakh crore.

• Net Advances: Expanded by 18% year-on-year to reach Rs 2.7 lakh crore.

• Total Deposits: Increased 17% year-on-year to Rs 3.6 lakh crore.

• CASA Deposits: Rose 12% year-on-year to Rs 1.6 lakh crore, supporting low-cost funding.

The solid double-digit expansion across core metrics has reinforced expectations that the bank will deliver healthy net interest margins and steady asset quality numbers.

Share Price Trend and Technical Levels

The rally marked a significant momentum shift for IDBI Bank, which had risen 6% over the preceding five trading sessions and about 8% over the past month. Over a six-month horizon, the stock has gained over 20%, significantly outpacing the headline indices.

IDBI Bank touched a 52-week high of Rs 118.38 on January 5, followed by a 52-week low of Rs 61.01 on March 30. At Wednesday's peak, the stock was trading roughly 53% above its 52-week trough.

Market participants will closely monitor whether the counter sustains above the Rs 90 threshold heading into the Q2 announcement, alongside developments regarding the central government's and LIC's proposed stake divestment process....

Barclays Prepares to Relaunch India Equity Capital Markets Advisory After Decade-Long Hiatus

Category: Markets

British multinational lender Barclays Plc is preparing to restart its equity capital markets (ECM) advisory business in India after a hiatus of nearly ten years, positioning itself to capture a larger share of the country's historic fundraising boom.

The London-headquartered bank had exited its Indian ECM, equity broking, and research operations roughly a decade ago as part of a wider restructuring across Asia. The renewed push will see Barclays expand beyond its current footprint in corporate lending, debt financing, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advisory to offer a full suite of wholesale banking solutions.

Capitalising on an Unprecedented Fundraising Boom

Barclays India Chief Executive Officer Pramod Kumar confirmed the development on the sidelines of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, highlighting that equity capabilities had become the sole missing link in the bank's local franchise.

"That’s one important product missing in our otherwise very strong wholesale banking offering," Kumar noted, adding that the bank believes India provides a sustained, long-term opportunity to assist corporate clients across both debt and equity financing.

The planned comeback coincides with rapid expansion in India's primary equity markets:

• Record Investment Banking Fees: Investment banks earned an all-time high of $417 million in IPO fees in India last year, according to data compiled by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), aided by strong deal velocity and enhanced underwriting margins.

• Massive Primary Market Volumes: Indian companies mobilized approximately $25.27 billion through equity fundraising in the first half of fiscal 2027—a 75% surge year-on-year.

• Deepening Deal Pipeline: Roughly 170 companies have secured regulatory clearance from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for public issues, with another 115 draft offer documents actively under review.

Domestic Liquidity Driving Market Resilience

A central catalyst encouraging global investment banks to bolster their local desks is the growing maturity and resilience of Indian retail liquidity. Kumar pointed out that domestic inflows, led by systematic investment plans (SIPs) from retail and high-net-worth individuals, have created a substantial cushion that supports primary issuances even during phases of foreign institutional selling.

India's economic growth, with gross domestic product (GDP) compounding at upwards of 7%, continues to generate capital demand across high-growth segments. A pipeline of new-age tech ventures, fintech entities, consumer technology platforms, and massive capital expenditure plans in infrastructure and manufacturing sectors are driving businesses toward the public markets.

Barclays Prepares Return to Indian Equity Capital Markets After Ten-Year Hiatus Amid Record IPO Boom

Category: Markets

British financial major Barclays Plc is preparing to restart its equity capital markets (ECM) business in India after an absence of nearly a decade, seeking to capitalise on a relentless wave of initial public offerings (IPOs) and record-setting fundraising across Dalal Street.

The strategic pivot, revealed by Barclays India Chief Executive Officer Pramod Kumar on the sidelines of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, marks a major step toward rounding out the lender's domestic footprint.

"That's one important product missing in our otherwise very strong wholesale banking offering," Kumar noted, emphasizing the long-term potential of the domestic market. "We believe India will offer a long-term opportunity for banks like us to help our clients in meeting their capital needs across debt as well as equity."

Capitalising on an Unprecedented IPO Boom

Barclays previously scaled down portions of its cash equity and underwriting operations across parts of the Asia-Pacific region during a global restructuring nearly a decade ago. Since then, the bank’s Indian presence has concentrated heavily on corporate and wholesale banking, fixed income, debt capital markets, and cross-border advisory.

However, India’s primary market has transformed into one of the most lucrative and high-volume dealmaking ecosystems globally. Robust domestic institutional inflows via systemic investment plans (SIPs), strong retail participation, and a swelling crop of mature new-age tech startups and manufacturing conglomerates have turned Mumbai into a global listing hub.

According to data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), investment banks hauled in a record $417 million in IPO underwriting fees in India last year as deal flow accelerated and merchant banking fees commanded better pricing power.

Robust Pipeline Underpins Primary Market Strength

Barclays' re-entry coincides with one of the deepest primary issuance pipelines the Indian market has ever witnessed.

Key factors supporting the ECM pipeline:

• Approximately 170 companies have already received formal approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to tap the markets.

• Another 115 corporate entities are awaiting regulatory clearance, bringing the total pool of pending listings to roughly 285 firms.

• Indian companies raised record equity capital in the first half of the fiscal year, with primary issuances recording sharp year-on-year growth alongside listing-day premiums....

SEBI Calls Single-Point SMAC Meeting on Thursday to Review Closing Auction Feedback

Category: Markets

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has convened a dedicated, single-point meeting of its Secondary Market Advisory Committee (SMAC) on Thursday to deliberate on public feedback received for the Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework. The regulator has kept the agenda open to discuss extensive stakeholder responses regarding market timings and derivative settlement pricing.

The development comes shortly after SEBI concluded public consultations on its paper titled "Review of certain aspects of the Closing Auction Session, Market Timings and Settlement Methodologies for Derivative Contracts" on October 3, 2026. The market regulator received approximately 20,000 submissions from market participants, underscoring intense industry interest in the closing price determination mechanism.

Key Concerns Over Closing Auction Volatility

SEBI had rolled out the CAS mechanism in the equity cash segment for futures and options (F&O) stocks starting August 3, 2026, aiming to align domestic market operations with international standards seen in the United States and Hong Kong. Under the system, a short auction at the end of the trading day determines final cash market closing values.

However, market participants reported elevated volatility and wide price dislocations during the auction window, particularly on weekly and monthly expiry days. Sharp fluctuations in index and underlying equity values during the closing auction frequently triggered massive swings in option premiums, resulting in unexpected losses for retail participants and institutional traders alike.

Options Under Evaluation by SMAC

The advisory panel is expected to examine critical alternatives to address expiry-day distortions:

• Reverting to VWAP for Derivatives: Discontinuing the use of CAS for derivative contract settlement and returning to the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) calculation based on the final 30 minutes of continuous trading.

• Blended Settlement Methodology: Introducing a hybrid mechanism that combines weighted averages from both regular continuous trading and the closing auction.

• Revised Auction Windows: Adjusting transition periods between regular trading and auction sessions, alongside tighter reference price bands to prevent spoofing and anomalous execution spikes.

SEBI Chairperson Tuhin Kanta Pandey recently highlighted that the regulator is rapidly analyzing the inputs and aims to issue formal guidelines shortly. Thursday's SMAC deliberations are expected to form the foundation of SEBI's final policy circular, providing much-needed clarity to brokers, algorithmic trading desks, and derivative market participants across India....

RBI Surveys Reveal Rural and Urban Consumer Optimism Slipped in 2026, Erasing 2025 Gains Ahead of Festive Demand

Category: Markets

Consumer optimism across both rural and urban India has steadily deteriorated throughout 2026, unwinding the improvements recorded over the previous calendar year, according to the latest survey rounds published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

By the September 2026 survey round, household assessments of current economic conditions as well as expectations for the year ahead fell below the levels recorded at the beginning of 2025. This prolonged softening in sentiment arrives during the high-stakes festive season—traditionally the peak earnings window for automakers, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturers, and consumer durable companies.

Future Expectations See Broad-Based Erosion

The RBI’s Future Expectations Index (FEI), which gauges household economic sentiment for the one-year-ahead horizon, showed consistent gains throughout 2025. In 2025, the rural index climbed from 124.1 in January to 128.6 in November, while the urban index rose from 120.7 to 125.6.

That trajectory reversed over the course of 2026:

• Urban future confidence declined from 123.4 in January 2026 down to 113.5 in September 2026.

• Rural future confidence initially peaked at 129.3 in January 2026 before registering consecutive declines to touch 112.8 in September 2026.

While both readings remain above the neutral benchmark of 100—signifying that net positive sentiment persists—the steep retreat reflects growing caution among households, with rural optimism experiencing a noticeably sharper drag.

Commenting on the survey findings, Shweta Rajani, Associate Director at Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, observed that mounting living expenses are dampening household psychology.

"Consumers continue to remain optimistic about the future, although rising inflation has made their expectations more cautious," Rajani noted, citing pressure on household budgets and lingering anxieties over future income growth and employment creation.

Current Situation Sinks Deeper into Pessimism

Household appraisals of current economic health have painted an even more sober picture.

The rural Current Situation Index (CSI)—which tracks perceptions of the economy, employment, prices, income, and spending against the previous year—stood at 100.5 in January 2026 after recovering from 98.0 in January 2025 to 100.8 in November 2025. However, it slipped into pessimistic territory (below 100) in March 2026 and fell for six consecutive rounds to touch 90.6 in September 2026.

Key Drivers Behind the Rural Downturn:

• Economic and Job Pessimism: The net response on the general economic situation fell to -14.1 in September from -11.9 in July, while the net response on employment declined to -10.5 from -8.0....
