Noel Tata and Son Neville File Caveats in Bombay High Court Amid Tata Trusts Governance Rift
Category: Markets
In an escalating dispute at the apex of India's largest conglomerate, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) Chairman Noel Tata and his son, trustee Neville Tata, have moved the Bombay High Court and the Mumbai City Civil Court by filing caveats to safeguard their positions against any unilateral legal orders.
The legal filings, submitted under Section 148A of the Code of Civil Procedure, act as a precautionary measure. They ensure that the courts cannot pass any interim or ex-parte orders against Noel Tata and Neville Tata without notifying them and giving them an opportunity to present their side of the dispute.
The Legal Countermove
The court records identify Noel Tata and Neville Tata as caveators, while listing fellow trustees Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, Darius Khambata, and Bhaskar Bhat as caveatees. Sources close to the trusts indicated that while Srinivasan and Singh are actively contesting the leadership's decisions, the inclusion of senior counsel Darius Khambata and former Titan managing director Bhaskar Bhat is purely procedural, as trust-related litigation generally requires naming all serving trustees as parties. Both Khambata and Bhat have previously backed Noel Tata's position in communications addressed to the dissenting trustees.
The move to approach Mumbai's civil courts follows multiple caveats already lodged by Noel Tata and Neville Tata before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner. That regulatory body had previously received formal petitions from Venu Srinivasan, Vice Chairman of SDTT, and trustee Vijay Singh. The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner recently granted SDTT, Noel Tata, and Neville Tata an extension until October 19 to submit their responses to the allegations, extending beyond the previous deadline of October 12.
Friction Over Governance and Appointments
The root of the boardroom confrontation lies in internal fissures within the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, which represents the largest philanthropic vehicle holding equity in Tata Sons Pvt. Ltd., the group holding company.
Key areas of disagreement include:
• Trustee Appointments: Srinivasan and Singh have formally challenged the induction of Neville Tata as a trustee and raised questions over the status and validity of Noel Tata's position as a perpetual trustee under Maharashtra Public Trusts Act norms.
• Voting and Board Resolutions: Disagreements arose over specific circular resolutions circulated within the trust, which opposing trustees argued were intended to neutralize independent voting within the philanthropic boards....

Navratna defence public sector undertaking Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) announced that it has secured additional contracts worth ₹533 crore since its previous market disclosure on September 17. Following the announcement submitted under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, shares of BEL rose up to 1% to touch an intraday high of ₹383.85 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), building on Tuesday's closing price of ₹380.

IDBI Bank Shares Jump Nearly 13% Defying Weak Market Ahead of Q2 Results
Category: Markets
Shares of IDBI Bank Ltd witnessed aggressive buying on Wednesday, rallying nearly 13% in morning trade and defying a cautious, flat-to-negative tone in the broader domestic equity markets.
The stock opened at Rs 84.32 on the BSE against its previous close of Rs 82.92, rapidly surging to an intraday peak of Rs 93.62. The sharp upmove made IDBI Bank one of the top performers across the banking pack, even as the benchmark BSE Sensex slipped nearly 0.20% in morning action before hovering around the 73,095 mark.
Pre-Earnings Optimism Drives Bull Run
Market sentiment around IDBI Bank turned decisively bullish ahead of its upcoming board meeting scheduled for October 17. The bank announced that its Board of Directors will meet to consider and approve the unaudited financial results for the quarter and half-year ended September 30, subject to a limited review by statutory auditors.

• Total Business: Grew 18% year-on-year to approximately Rs 6.27 lakh crore.
• Net Advances: Expanded by 18% year-on-year to reach Rs 2.7 lakh crore.
• Total Deposits: Increased 17% year-on-year to Rs 3.6 lakh crore.
• CASA Deposits: Rose 12% year-on-year to Rs 1.6 lakh crore, supporting low-cost funding.
The solid double-digit expansion across core metrics has reinforced expectations that the bank will deliver healthy net interest margins and steady asset quality numbers.
Share Price Trend and Technical Levels
The rally marked a significant momentum shift for IDBI Bank, which had risen 6% over the preceding five trading sessions and about 8% over the past month. Over a six-month horizon, the stock has gained over 20%, significantly outpacing the headline indices.
IDBI Bank touched a 52-week high of Rs 118.38 on January 5, followed by a 52-week low of Rs 61.01 on March 30. At Wednesday's peak, the stock was trading roughly 53% above its 52-week trough.
Market participants will closely monitor whether the counter sustains above the Rs 90 threshold heading into the Q2 announcement, alongside developments regarding the central government's and LIC's proposed stake divestment process....

Barclays Prepares to Relaunch India Equity Capital Markets Advisory After Decade-Long Hiatus
Category: Markets
British multinational lender Barclays Plc is preparing to restart its equity capital markets (ECM) advisory business in India after a hiatus of nearly ten years, positioning itself to capture a larger share of the country's historic fundraising boom.
The London-headquartered bank had exited its Indian ECM, equity broking, and research operations roughly a decade ago as part of a wider restructuring across Asia. The renewed push will see Barclays expand beyond its current footprint in corporate lending, debt financing, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advisory to offer a full suite of wholesale banking solutions.
Capitalising on an Unprecedented Fundraising Boom
Barclays India Chief Executive Officer Pramod Kumar confirmed the development on the sidelines of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, highlighting that equity capabilities had become the sole missing link in the bank's local franchise.
"That’s one important product missing in our otherwise very strong wholesale banking offering," Kumar noted, adding that the bank believes India provides a sustained, long-term opportunity to assist corporate clients across both debt and equity financing.
The planned comeback coincides with rapid expansion in India's primary equity markets:
• Record Investment Banking Fees: Investment banks earned an all-time high of $417 million in IPO fees in India last year, according to data compiled by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), aided by strong deal velocity and enhanced underwriting margins.
• Massive Primary Market Volumes: Indian companies mobilized approximately $25.27 billion through equity fundraising in the first half of fiscal 2027—a 75% surge year-on-year.
• Deepening Deal Pipeline: Roughly 170 companies have secured regulatory clearance from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for public issues, with another 115 draft offer documents actively under review.
Domestic Liquidity Driving Market Resilience
A central catalyst encouraging global investment banks to bolster their local desks is the growing maturity and resilience of Indian retail liquidity. Kumar pointed out that domestic inflows, led by systematic investment plans (SIPs) from retail and high-net-worth individuals, have created a substantial cushion that supports primary issuances even during phases of foreign institutional selling.
India's economic growth, with gross domestic product (GDP) compounding at upwards of 7%, continues to generate capital demand across high-growth segments. A pipeline of new-age tech ventures, fintech entities, consumer technology platforms, and massive capital expenditure plans in infrastructure and manufacturing sectors are driving businesses toward the public markets.

Barclays Prepares Return to Indian Equity Capital Markets After Ten-Year Hiatus Amid Record IPO Boom
Category: Markets
British financial major Barclays Plc is preparing to restart its equity capital markets (ECM) business in India after an absence of nearly a decade, seeking to capitalise on a relentless wave of initial public offerings (IPOs) and record-setting fundraising across Dalal Street.
The strategic pivot, revealed by Barclays India Chief Executive Officer Pramod Kumar on the sidelines of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, marks a major step toward rounding out the lender's domestic footprint.
"That's one important product missing in our otherwise very strong wholesale banking offering," Kumar noted, emphasizing the long-term potential of the domestic market. "We believe India will offer a long-term opportunity for banks like us to help our clients in meeting their capital needs across debt as well as equity."
Capitalising on an Unprecedented IPO Boom
Barclays previously scaled down portions of its cash equity and underwriting operations across parts of the Asia-Pacific region during a global restructuring nearly a decade ago. Since then, the bank’s Indian presence has concentrated heavily on corporate and wholesale banking, fixed income, debt capital markets, and cross-border advisory.
However, India’s primary market has transformed into one of the most lucrative and high-volume dealmaking ecosystems globally. Robust domestic institutional inflows via systemic investment plans (SIPs), strong retail participation, and a swelling crop of mature new-age tech startups and manufacturing conglomerates have turned Mumbai into a global listing hub.
According to data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), investment banks hauled in a record $417 million in IPO underwriting fees in India last year as deal flow accelerated and merchant banking fees commanded better pricing power.
Robust Pipeline Underpins Primary Market Strength
Barclays' re-entry coincides with one of the deepest primary issuance pipelines the Indian market has ever witnessed.
Key factors supporting the ECM pipeline:
• Approximately 170 companies have already received formal approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to tap the markets.
• Another 115 corporate entities are awaiting regulatory clearance, bringing the total pool of pending listings to roughly 285 firms.
• Indian companies raised record equity capital in the first half of the fiscal year, with primary issuances recording sharp year-on-year growth alongside listing-day premiums....

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has convened a dedicated, single-point meeting of its Secondary Market Advisory Committee (SMAC) on Thursday to deliberate on public feedback received for the Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework. The regulator has kept the agenda open to discuss extensive stakeholder responses regarding market timings and derivative settlement pricing.
The development comes shortly after SEBI concluded public consultations on its paper titled "Review of certain aspects of the Closing Auction Session, Market Timings and Settlement Methodologies for Derivative Contracts" on October 3, 2026. The market regulator received approximately 20,000 submissions from market participants, underscoring intense industry interest in the closing price determination mechanism.
Key Concerns Over Closing Auction Volatility
SEBI had rolled out the CAS mechanism in the equity cash segment for futures and options (F&O) stocks starting August 3, 2026, aiming to align domestic market operations with international standards seen in the United States and Hong Kong. Under the system, a short auction at the end of the trading day determines final cash market closing values.
However, market participants reported elevated volatility and wide price dislocations during the auction window, particularly on weekly and monthly expiry days. Sharp fluctuations in index and underlying equity values during the closing auction frequently triggered massive swings in option premiums, resulting in unexpected losses for retail participants and institutional traders alike.
Options Under Evaluation by SMAC
The advisory panel is expected to examine critical alternatives to address expiry-day distortions:
• Reverting to VWAP for Derivatives: Discontinuing the use of CAS for derivative contract settlement and returning to the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) calculation based on the final 30 minutes of continuous trading.
• Blended Settlement Methodology: Introducing a hybrid mechanism that combines weighted averages from both regular continuous trading and the closing auction.
• Revised Auction Windows: Adjusting transition periods between regular trading and auction sessions, alongside tighter reference price bands to prevent spoofing and anomalous execution spikes.
SEBI Chairperson Tuhin Kanta Pandey recently highlighted that the regulator is rapidly analyzing the inputs and aims to issue formal guidelines shortly. Thursday's SMAC deliberations are expected to form the foundation of SEBI's final policy circular, providing much-needed clarity to brokers, algorithmic trading desks, and derivative market participants across India....

RBI Surveys Reveal Rural and Urban Consumer Optimism Slipped in 2026, Erasing 2025 Gains Ahead of Festive Demand
Category: Markets
Consumer optimism across both rural and urban India has steadily deteriorated throughout 2026, unwinding the improvements recorded over the previous calendar year, according to the latest survey rounds published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
By the September 2026 survey round, household assessments of current economic conditions as well as expectations for the year ahead fell below the levels recorded at the beginning of 2025. This prolonged softening in sentiment arrives during the high-stakes festive season—traditionally the peak earnings window for automakers, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturers, and consumer durable companies.
Future Expectations See Broad-Based Erosion
The RBI’s Future Expectations Index (FEI), which gauges household economic sentiment for the one-year-ahead horizon, showed consistent gains throughout 2025. In 2025, the rural index climbed from 124.1 in January to 128.6 in November, while the urban index rose from 120.7 to 125.6.
That trajectory reversed over the course of 2026:
• Urban future confidence declined from 123.4 in January 2026 down to 113.5 in September 2026.
• Rural future confidence initially peaked at 129.3 in January 2026 before registering consecutive declines to touch 112.8 in September 2026.
While both readings remain above the neutral benchmark of 100—signifying that net positive sentiment persists—the steep retreat reflects growing caution among households, with rural optimism experiencing a noticeably sharper drag.
Commenting on the survey findings, Shweta Rajani, Associate Director at Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, observed that mounting living expenses are dampening household psychology.
"Consumers continue to remain optimistic about the future, although rising inflation has made their expectations more cautious," Rajani noted, citing pressure on household budgets and lingering anxieties over future income growth and employment creation.
Current Situation Sinks Deeper into Pessimism
Household appraisals of current economic health have painted an even more sober picture.
The rural Current Situation Index (CSI)—which tracks perceptions of the economy, employment, prices, income, and spending against the previous year—stood at 100.5 in January 2026 after recovering from 98.0 in January 2025 to 100.8 in November 2025. However, it slipped into pessimistic territory (below 100) in March 2026 and fell for six consecutive rounds to touch 90.6 in September 2026.
Key Drivers Behind the Rural Downturn:
• Economic and Job Pessimism: The net response on the general economic situation fell to -14.1 in September from -11.9 in July, while the net response on employment declined to -10.5 from -8.0....

Sensex Falls 252 Points and Nifty Slips to 22,622 as Rising Crude and FII Outflows Dent Sentiment
Category: Markets

The BSE Sensex dropped 251.89 points, or 0.34 per cent, to settle at 72,781.89, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 99.25 points, or 0.44 per cent, to close at 22,622.70.

SEBI Proposes Revamp to Expand Accredited Investor Pool to 4 Lakh for AIFs
Category: Markets
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has released a consultation paper proposing a wide-ranging overhaul of the Accredited Investor (AI) framework. The move is designed to dismantle bureaucratic hurdles and significantly expand access to high-risk, high-return private market instruments such as Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), Portfolio Management Services (PMS), and Angel Funds.
According to SEBI, introducing a new eligibility criterion based on dematerialised securities market holdings could expand the pool of eligible accredited investors to approximately 4 lakh. In comparison, India’s current active AIF investor base stands at approximately 1 lakh (around 96,000 investors), while barely 3,820 individuals held formal accreditation certificates as of mid-2026 due to onerous certification procedures.
The proposed reforms stem from market feedback and recommendations submitted by SEBI’s Alternative Investment Policy Advisory Committee (AIPAC).
New Securities-Asset Eligibility Route
Under the existing framework established in 2021, individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), family trusts, and sole proprietorships must satisfy rigid income or net-worth thresholds to earn accreditation. Current criteria require an annual income of at least ₹2 crore, a net worth of at least ₹7.5 crore (with 50% in financial assets), or an annual income of ₹1 crore coupled with a ₹5 crore net worth.
SEBI has now proposed an additional, verifiable pathway based strictly on dematerialised market wealth:
• Individual Investors: Must hold at least ₹5 crore in securities market assets.
• Body Corporates: Must maintain at least ₹20 crore in securities market assets.
Eligible securities include listed equities, debt instruments, units of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), AIF units, mutual fund holdings, open futures positions, and unlisted securities held in demat form. SEBI noted that portfolio holdings verify an investor’s financial capability and signal familiarity with financial market volatility and risk.
Simplifying the Onboarding Architecture
Currently, investors must seek third-party verification through designated Accreditation Agencies, a process criticized by domestic wealth managers for being cumbersome and short-lived. SEBI is introducing operational relaxations to eliminate friction:
• Manager-Led Accreditation: Fund managers and intermediaries will be permitted to verify and accredit investors directly during onboarding, with accreditation valid across the intermediary's corporate group.
• Longer Certificate Validity: The validity period of accredited investor status is proposed to be extended to a uniform three years based on the latest verified documentation, replacing the current one- to two-year renewal cycles....

Zoho Shareholding Pattern Spotlights Radha Vembu as Majority Owner While Sridhar Vembu Holds Just 5 Percent
Category: Markets
The ownership architecture of Zoho Corporation Private Limited—India’s premier bootstrapped software-as-a-service (SaaS) titan—presents an equity breakdown that upends standard Silicon Valley and Indian startup norms. While Padma Shri awardee Sridhar Vembu has long served as the celebrated face, strategic architect, and longtime chief executive of the company, official cap table disclosures reveal that his personal stake is merely 5 percent.
Instead, the single largest equity block is held by his sister, Radha Vembu, who commands 47.8 percent of the privately held corporation. His brother, Sekar Vembu, holds 35.2 percent, giving the two siblings combined voting control of over 83 percent of the enterprise. Longtime co-founder Tony Thomas holds an 8 percent stake, with the remaining 4 percent distributed among other early stakeholders.
A Bootstrapped Powerhouse Built Differently
Founded originally as AdventNet in the late 1990s before rebranding to Zoho Corporation, the company bypassed venture capital and private equity funding rounds that typically dilute founding families. Operating out of headquarters in Chennai and rural hubs like Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu, Zoho built an enterprise suite spanning CRM, productivity tools, and cloud infrastructure serving millions of global users.
Because the company never turned to external institutional investors, its equity stayed entirely within the core founding circle:
• Radha Vembu (47.8%): Managing key product lines, including Zoho Workplace and Zoho Mail, her stake has positioned her among India's wealthiest self-made women on global billionaire rankings.
• Sekar Vembu (35.2%): A co-founder of AdventNet and founder of Vembu Technologies, his significant shareholding reflects the family's foundational operational contributions.
• Tony Thomas (8.0%): Co-founder and early technical cornerstone of AdventNet.
• Sridhar Vembu (5.0%): Founder, strategic visionary, and former CEO who transitioned into the role of chief scientist to focus on long-term R&D and deep tech.
• Other Shareholders (4.0%): Early team members and minority stakeholders.
Legal Scrutiny and Public Controversy
The unusual cap table came into sharp public and judicial focus following divorce proceedings filed in California by Sridhar Vembu’s estranged spouse, Pramila Srinivasan. Srinivasan alleged that Sridhar Vembu restructured intellectual property and shifted valuable equity to his siblings in India to prevent assets from falling under California’s community property division laws....

Post-Market Report: Sensex Sheds 252 Points, Nifty Slips to 22,622 as High Crude and FII Selling Offset IT Strength
Category: Markets
Market Performance Today
Indian equity benchmarks surrendered the previous session's robust gains on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as sustained foreign capital outflows and high crude oil prices dampened risk appetite. Following a volatile trading session characterized by choppy intraday moves, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined by 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to settle at 72,781.89. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty 50 dropped 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to close at 22,622.70.
The benchmark indices opened on a subdued note, briefly attempted to hold above key support levels, but eventually succumbed to persistent selling pressure in financial and healthcare heavyweights during afternoon trade.
Top Movers (Sectors and Stocks)
Sectoral performance remained mixed on Wednesday, with defensives like IT and FMCG showing relative resilience against widespread declines in cyclical and rate-sensitive pockets.
Sectoral Highlights:
• Top Gaining Sectors: Nifty IT (+1.25%) led the advance, followed by Nifty FMCG (+0.94%), Nifty Media (+0.59%), and Nifty PSU Bank (+0.14%).
• Top Losing Sectors: Nifty Pharma (-1.47%) was the biggest drag, followed by Nifty Auto (-0.94%), Nifty Realty (-0.87%), Nifty Financial Services (-0.64%), and Nifty Metal (-0.67%).

• Top Nifty Gainers: Nestle India, Infosys, Tata Consumer Products, Coal India, Tech Mahindra, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) posted notable gains, supported by earnings optimism and defensive positioning.
• Top Nifty Losers: Shriram Finance, HDFC Life Insurance Company, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Sun Pharma, and Mahindra & Mahindra ended among the primary laggards of the day.
Key Drivers of Today's Market
Several key domestic and international factors drove market movement during the session:
• Surging Global Crude Prices: Brent crude hovered around $106 to $107 per barrel amid escalating geopolitical tensions and supply disruption fears in the Middle East. Elevated energy prices renewed concerns regarding imported inflation, corporate margin pressures, and the stability of the Indian rupee.
• Persistent FII Outflows: Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) continued their aggressive offloading of domestic equities, extending a multi-session selling streak. Even though Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) offered downside support through regular purchases, persistent foreign fund exits kept market upside capped.
• Profit-Taking After Tuesday’s Rally: Following the substantial 1.6% surge recorded by major indices on Tuesday, market participants opted to book profits, especially in sectors that had witnessed sharp short-term run-ups....

SEBI Considers Major Overhaul of SME IPO Norms to Lower Entry Barriers for Retail Investors
Category: Markets
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is exploring a comprehensive revamp of regulations governing initial public offerings on small and medium enterprise (SME) platforms. The proposals, recently evaluated by SEBI's Primary Market Advisory Committee, seek to dismantle steep investment hurdles for retail participants while modernising eligibility metrics for growing corporate issuers.
The regulator is expected to formalise these deliberations in an upcoming public consultation paper before notifying final amendments to the Issue of Capital and Disclosure Requirements (ICDR) regulations.
Dismantling the Minimum Lot Size
Among the most consequential changes under review is the potential removal of the rigid lot-size framework for SME stocks. Under existing norms, investors must apply for SME IPOs and trade their shares in predefined batches typically requiring a minimum financial outlay of ₹2 lakh. This structural barrier was originally installed to deter small investors from high-risk, volatile counters.
Under the proposed revisions, SEBI is considering allowing secondary market trading in individual shares or much smaller ticket sizes. Eliminating the ₹2 lakh minimum lot requirement would democratise liquidity, expand genuine retail participation, and facilitate tighter bid-ask spreads across the segment.
Expanding Valuation Limits for Issuers
Alongside retail-friendly trading mechanisms, SEBI is also considering an expansion of company size thresholds permitted on SME bourses such as NSE Emerge and BSE SME:
• Higher Paid-up Capital Ceiling: Increasing the maximum permissible post-issue paid-up capital to ₹100 crore, up fourfold from the present ceiling of ₹25 crore.
• Market Capitalisation Cap: Permitting enterprises with valuations of up to ₹4,000 crore to raise funds via SME exchange platforms, compared to the current informal threshold where companies valued below ₹500 crore typically opt for SME routes.
• Dual Listing Flexibility: Allowing mid-sized enterprises valued between ₹1,000 crore and ₹4,000 crore the flexibility to choose whether to list on the mainboard or an SME platform.
Lowering Issuance Costs and Market-Making Mandates
The regulator is also examining measures to compress primary issuance costs for corporate promoters. Current guidelines make three-year market-making and full merchant banker underwriting compulsory for SME issues. While designed to guarantee price quotes and issue success, these provisions add significant advisory and capital-retention costs to small businesses.
Under the discussed framework, SEBI could ease or remove mandatory underwriting requirements and re-evaluate compulsory market-making mandates, allowing organic order-book depth and institutional demand to determine price action.
Implications for Indian Investors...

NBFC Shares Tumble up to 5% After RBI Hikes Daily CRR Maintenance to 99%
Category: Markets
Shares of non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and housing finance firms came under heavy selling pressure, sliding up to 5% as market participants factored in the fallout from the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) revised Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) maintenance guidelines.
The regulatory tweak, which mandates scheduled commercial banks to adhere to a stricter daily cash reserve threshold, triggered fresh worries that bank liquidity could dry up and lift funding costs across the shadow banking ecosystem.
Key Stocks Under Selling Pressure
Housing financiers and retail asset lenders led the losses on Dalal Street:
• LIC Housing Finance: Plunged 5.14% to trade at ₹535.00.
• Shriram Finance: Slid 3.85% to ₹950.00.
• HDB Financial Services: Fell 4.02% to ₹584.55.
• Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company: Dropped 3.56% to ₹1,563.00.
• L&T Finance: Declined 3.29% to ₹258.80.
• Tata Capital: Fell 3.28% to ₹316.90.
• Bajaj Finance: Shed 2.62% to ₹957.00, while Bajaj Finserv fell 1.94% to ₹1,721.70.
• Muthoot Finance: Dropped 1.75% to ₹2,580.00.
The Regulatory Shift Explained
Under the revised framework announced by the central bank, commercial banks are now required to maintain a minimum of 99% of their prescribed CRR requirement on each day of the reporting fortnight, up sharply from the earlier floor of 90%. The new rule becomes effective from the reporting fortnight beginning October 16, 2026.
While the headline statutory CRR remains unchanged at 3% of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL), the stricter daily maintenance eliminates the operational leeway banks previously enjoyed to manage cash deficits or surpluses across the fortnight. Because CRR balances kept with the RBI earn zero interest, holding higher and more rigid daily balances restricts lenders' ability to deploy capital into short-term lending facilities.
Liquidity Drain and Higher Borrowing Costs
Global brokerage Jefferies estimated that banks may need to raise their cash balances held with the RBI by 5% to 10% to comfortably comply with the 99% daily mandate. This adjustment is projected to absorb ₹40,000 crore to ₹80,000 crore (₹400 billion to ₹800 billion) of liquidity from the banking system.
Jefferies noted that while the direct impact on banks' net interest margins (NIMs) may be modest—increasing banks' cost of funds by an estimated 1 to 2 basis points—banks are likely to pass these incremental costs on to commercial borrowers.

SEBI Confirms Interim Directions Against Rajesh Exports Over Financial Misrepresentation Probe
Category: Markets
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has confirmed and continued the directions issued against Bengaluru-headquartered gold refiner Rajesh Exports Limited and its promoter-chairman Rajesh Mehta. In a confirmatory order issued on October 14, 2026, the markets watchdog upheld the regulatory curbs and investigative mandates initiated in its earlier ex-parte interim order.
The regulatory action stems from an extensive probe into the company’s accounts between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2025 (FY21 to FY25). SEBI’s initial 109-page interim order, passed on June 3, 2026, by Whole-Time Member Kamlesh Chandra Varshney, alleged that Rajesh Exports had engaged in multi-year financial misrepresentation involving approximately ₹15.15 lakh crore in consolidated revenues.
Key Findings and Directives Upheld
The regulator maintained its prima facie findings regarding significant corporate governance lapses, lack of disclosure, and accounting irregularities. With the confirmatory order, the interim directions remain fully operative:
• Restraint on Promoter: Promoter and Executive Chairman Rajesh Mehta continues to be barred from dealing in the securities of Rajesh Exports until the completion of ongoing regulatory proceedings.
• Continuation of Forensic Audit: The mandate for an exhaustive independent forensic audit into the company's books of accounts and transactions remains in effect.
• Disclosure Requirements: The company remains directed to provide unhindered cooperation, books of accounts, and primary transaction records to investigators and auditors.
• Regulatory Scrutiny of Overseas Numbers: Scrutiny will continue over the reported financials of its foreign subsidiaries, including Swiss gold refinery Valcambi SA, which accounted for between 97% and 99.8% of the company's consolidated top line during the period under examination.
Background of the Regulatory Action
The probe originated from a shareholder complaint concerning long-pending trade receivables and financial disclosures. SEBI noted in its initial proceedings that Rajesh Exports had withheld access to underlying accounting records and primary transaction data, often citing foreign data privacy frameworks such as the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) to avoid disclosing subsidiary-level details. The regulator dismissed these defenses, ruling that listed Indian entities cannot cite foreign data regimes to sidestep domestic reporting obligations....
