India Posts USD 45.4 Billion Balance of Payments Surplus in August on Record NRI Inflows and Resilient Services
Category: Markets
India's overall balance of payments (BoP) recorded a surplus of USD 45.4 billion in August, marking a dramatic rebound from a deficit of USD 5.6 billion logged in the same month last year, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The surplus also accelerated from the USD 20.8 billion surplus reported in July, reflecting strong momentum in capital flows that overshadowed the prevailing shortfall in merchandise trade. Cumulatively, during the April–August period, India's overall balance of payments logged a surplus of USD 58 billion, up from a deficit of USD 0.8 billion during the corresponding period last fiscal year.
Capital Account Drives Massive Inflows
The sharp turnaround in India's external accounts was primarily propelled by the capital account, which registered net inflows of USD 50.6 billion, compared to just USD 0.5 billion a year ago.
Key Drivers of Capital Inflows:
• Banking Capital: Net banking capital recorded an inflow of USD 64.7 billion in August, reversing an outflow of USD 4.7 billion registered in August last year.
• NRI Deposits: Net non-resident Indian (NRI) deposits surged to USD 83 billion during the month, compared with USD 1 billion in the year-ago period, driven by central bank incentives and deposit schemes aimed at attracting foreign currency.
• Foreign Direct Investment: Net foreign direct investment (FDI) turned positive to USD 3.3 billion, recovering from a net outflow of USD 0.1 billion in the same month last year.
Narrowing Current Account Deficit
On the trade and current receipts front, India's current account deficit (CAD) narrowed to USD 5.2 billion in August from USD 6.1 billion a year earlier. A narrowing merchandise trade gap and steady gains in software and business services exports helped contain the deficit.
The net merchandise trade deficit contracted to USD 26.6 billion from USD 27.6 billion in August last year. Merchandise exports rose to USD 44.7 billion from USD 35.1 billion, while imports increased to USD 71.3 billion from USD 62.7 billion.
Meanwhile, the services trade surplus expanded to USD 16.5 billion in August from USD 15.6 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year. Services exports advanced to USD 35.5 billion from USD 31.2 billion, outpacing services imports, which stood at USD 18.9 billion. Net transfers, primarily comprising private remittances, rose to USD 12.8 billion....

Wipro Q2 Net Profit Slips 1.4% to ₹3,201 Crore as Large Deal Wins Plunge
Category: Markets
Bengaluru-based IT services major Wipro Ltd announced its financial results for the second quarter ended September 30 (Q2 FY27), posting a 1.4% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to ₹3,201 crore. Sequentially, net profit declined 4.5% from ₹3,352 crore posted in the preceding quarter.
Gross revenue from operations expanded 9.1% year-on-year and 1.1% quarter-on-quarter to ₹24,753 crore (₹24,752.7 crore). Both headline numbers trailed Bloomberg consensus estimates, which had projected a net profit of ₹3,310 crore and revenue of ₹24,773 crore.
Key Earnings Highlights
• Net Profit: Consolidated net profit attributable to equity holders stood at ₹3,201 crore (₹3,200.6 crore), down 1.4% YoY and 4.5% QoQ.
• Gross Revenue: Total revenue rose 9.1% YoY to ₹24,753 crore compared to ₹22,697.3 crore in Q2 FY26.
• IT Services Revenue: Revenue from IT services came in at $2,611.5 million, up 0.3% YoY but down 0.1% sequentially. In constant currency (CC) terms, segment revenue grew 0.6% YoY and remained flat QoQ.
• Operating Margin: IT services operating margin expanded 50 basis points sequentially to 16.5%, though it remained short of the management's target band of 17% to 18%.
• Cash Flow: Operating cash flows stood at ₹5,300 crore, jumping 61.3% QoQ and reaching 165.8% of quarterly net profit.
Sharp Decline in Deal Bookings and Tepid Guidance
Deal momentum softened considerably during the quarter. Total bookings fell to $2.595 billion, down 22.9% sequentially in constant currency terms. Large deal bookings—contracts valued at $30 million and above—plunged 58.6% quarter-on-quarter in constant currency to $674 million.
Reflecting sluggish demand conversion, the company projected muted near-term performance. Wipro guided for Q3 FY27 IT services revenue in the range of $2,571 million to $2,625 million, representing sequential constant-currency growth between -1.5% and +0.5%.
Segment Trends and Management Commentary
Sectoral performance showed divergence across key verticals. Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) supported the top line with a 1.3% sequential rise, while the European geography reported constant-currency growth of 5.1% year-on-year. However, weakness in US clients weighed heavily on the Health business (down 6.5%) and Energy, Natural Resources & Utilities (down 6.6%).
“Despite a challenging macroeconomic environment, our business remains resilient. Artificial intelligence (AI) will accelerate new growth avenues, and push demand for higher value transformation. Signs of that are already evident in the momentum that we are seeing in our AI-led series,” said Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Srini Pallia....

India Current Account Deficit Narrows to $5.2 Billion in August as Services Exports and Remittances Surge
Category: Markets
India’s external sector demonstrated resilience as the country’s current account deficit (CAD) narrowed to $5.2 billion in August from $6.1 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. According to preliminary data on the developments in India’s balance of payments released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the moderation was largely propelled by an improved trade balance, higher services receipts, and buoyant remittances.
The performance of the current account, paired with robust capital flows, generated an overall Balance of Payments (BoP) surplus of $45.4 billion for August, staging a sharp turnaround from a deficit of $5.6 billion registered during the same period last year.
Merchandise and Services Trade Dynamics
The narrowing CAD was underpinned by an uptick in export momentum alongside steady gains in invisible earnings:
• Merchandise Trade Deficit: The deficit in merchandise trade contracted to $26.6 billion in August, down from $27.6 billion a year earlier.
• Merchandise Trade Flows: Outbound shipments rose to $44.7 billion compared to $35.1 billion in August of the previous year. Inbound shipments increased to $71.3 billion from $62.7 billion over the same period.
• Services Surplus: The net surplus in services trade widened to $16.5 billion in August from $15.6 billion a year ago. Services exports expanded to $35.5 billion from $31.2 billion, outpacing services imports which stood at $18.9 billion.
• Secondary and Primary Income: Net transfers—chiefly representing remittances from overseas Indian workers—climbed to $12.8 billion from $12.2 billion. However, the net deficit in the primary income account widened to $8.0 billion from $6.3 billion.
Cumulative Performance in April–August
Despite the monthly improvement seen in August, cumulative figures for the ongoing fiscal year highlight ongoing external pressures. During the April–August period, India's cumulative current account deficit widened to $18.3 billion, compared to $12.8 billion recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Cumulative merchandise exports stood at $219.9 billion while imports reached $366.0 billion, buffered by a net services trade surplus of $85.8 billion and net remittances of $66.8 billion.
Nevertheless, the April–August overall BoP remained comfortably in surplus at $58.0 billion, providing substantial support to foreign exchange reserves.
Capital Inflows Cushion External Headwinds
The turnaround in India’s overall balance of payments position was driven by a heavy influx into the capital account, which posted net inflows of $50.6 billion in August, up from $0.5 billion a year earlier.

DIIs Cushion ₹5,285-Crore FII Sell-Off as Sensex Surges 1,534 Points and Nifty Nears 23,000
Category: FII/DII Data
Market Snapshot
Dalal Street witnessed a sharp large-cap driven rebound on Thursday, October 15, 2026, defying weak regional sentiment across Asia. The 30-share BSE Sensex rallied 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to close near the day's peak at 74,315.61. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 gained 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to settle just shy of the psychological milestone at 22,997.35.
Key benchmark drivers and sectoral highlights included:
• Top Gainers: Tech Mahindra (+4.61%), ICICI Bank (+4.17%), Reliance Industries (+4%), Bharti Airtel (+2.94%), and TCS (+2.28%) spearheaded the frontline rally.
• Sector Performance: Nifty Private Bank (+1.89%), Nifty IT (+1.82%), and Nifty Auto (+1.67%) led the sectoral advance, while Nifty PSU Bank (-1.55%) and Nifty Media (-1.47%) faced selective profit booking.
• Market Breadth: The headline advance showed divergence from the broader market; the BSE MidCap Select index slipped 0.40% and the SmallCap Select index tumbled 1.52%, indicating heavy concentration of buying within large-cap counters.
Institutional Flows: Cash Market
Provisional institutional trading figures for October 15, 2026, highlighted persistent divergence between foreign capital outflows and steady domestic support:
• Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs): Gross purchases stood at ₹12,735.59 crore against gross sales of ₹18,020.96 crore, resulting in a net cash market outflow of ₹5,285.37 crore.
• Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs): Gross purchases reached ₹19,438.65 crore against gross sales of ₹16,119.26 crore, resulting in a net cash market inflow of ₹3,319.39 crore.
While DIIs continued to provide counterbalancing liquidity, cumulative institutional net flow for the session closed at -₹1,965.98 crore, underscoring that global funds used the sharp intraday surge to liquidate positions into strength.
Derivatives Market Activity
Derivatives positioning revealed a critical reassessment of key technical boundaries as the Nifty reclaimed the 22,900 mark:
• Support and Resistance: Technical setup analysts noted immediate resistance for Nifty 50 clustered between 23,050 and 23,150, with key support shifting upward to 22,900–22,950, followed by 22,750. For Sensex, immediate hurdles are seen at 74,600–74,900, with support pegged at 74,100–73,900.
• F&O Positioning: Derivatives data reflected continued hedging and short exposure by foreign desks across index derivatives, contrasting with aggressive domestic short-covering in IT and large-cap private lenders.
Key Drivers and Outlook
A confluence of global macroeconomic relief and corporate developments spurred the day's sharp reversal:
• Easing Commodity Pressures: A drop of over 2% in Brent crude oil prices eased imported inflation and margin concerns for corporate India....

SEBI Overhauls Market Timings and Derivatives Settlement Rules Effective December 7, 2026
Category: Markets
Capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has released a comprehensive overhaul of trading timings, the Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework, and expiry-day derivatives settlement mechanisms across Indian bourses.
The revised framework resolves weeks of industry deliberation following a consultation paper issued in September that drew over 20,000 public comments. The core provisions will come into force on December 7, 2026, while the rules governing the rollover of iceberg orders will take effect on February 8, 2027.
Restructured Closing Auction Window
Under the revised structure, continuous trading in the cash equity segment will run until 3:30 PM, after which the dedicated 10-minute Closing Auction Session will operate from 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM across all trading days.
Phases of the Closing Auction Session:
• 3:30 PM – 3:31 PM: A one-minute buffer allocated for calculating reference prices and transitioning orders from continuous trading.
• 3:31 PM – 3:36 PM: A five-minute order-entry window permitting both limit and market orders.
• 3:36 PM – 3:38/3:40 PM: A final phase where only limit orders are accepted, while market orders cannot be cancelled or modified. The session will close at a random timestamp during the last two minutes to discourage algorithmic gaming and last-second order spoofing.
The cash market post-close trading session will run between 3:50 PM and 4:00 PM, allowing participants to execute trades at the day's established closing price.
Extended Hours for Derivatives Trading
To ensure seamless risk mitigation and allow domestic institutional and retail traders to hedge against closing auction price discovery, SEBI has extended trading hours for futures and options (F&O):
Derivatives Operational Timings:
• Index Derivatives: Normal trading will continue until 3:45 PM on regular days. However, on contract expiry days, expiring index contracts will cease trading at 3:30 PM.
• Stock Derivatives: Trading will remain open until 3:45 PM on all trading days, including contract expiry days.
Retention of 30-Minute VWAP for Settlement
Addressing widespread concerns from brokers and proprietary trading desks over an earlier proposal for a blended auction-cash settlement price, SEBI opted to retain the traditional 30-minute Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) calculation....

Pre-Market Report: Firm Start Expected as GIFT Nifty Crosses 23,070 Mark
Category: Markets
Global Market Cues
Overnight moves across major global markets reflect an overall stable-to-positive risk appetite. Wall Street concluded on a strong note, buoyed by resilience in mega-cap technology names and investor optimism heading into the core corporate earnings cycle.
In Asian trade this morning, sentiment remained mixed to positive. Regional markets absorbed overnight gains from US indices, though gains in select Asian bourses were partially capped by profit-taking and caution surrounding geopolitical developments. In commodities, crude oil prices remain elevated, demanding caution from domestic oil marketing companies and import-reliant sectors.
GIFT Nifty and Domestic Cues
Early morning indicators from the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City point to positive follow-through momentum for the domestic market:
• GIFT Nifty Level: GIFT Nifty traded at 23,073.50, up approximately 76 points (+0.33%) against the previous Nifty 50 cash market close.
• Previous Session Close: On Thursday, October 15, Indian equities recorded massive gains, with the Nifty 50 surging 374.65 points (+1.66%) to settle at 22,997.35, while the BSE Sensex jumped 1,533.72 points (+2.11%) to close at 74,315.61. Bank Nifty similarly advanced to close at 55,810.50.
• Technical Levels: Nifty faces immediate resistance around the 23,076–23,150 zone. A sustained trade above this band could extend the rally toward 23,300. On the downside, immediate support is pegged at 22,850, followed by strong structural support at 22,700.
Key Stocks in Focus
• Tech Mahindra: The IT major is in the spotlight after reporting a solid Q2 profit beat alongside the announcement of a 1:1 bonus issue.
• IIFL Finance: Shares will react favorably to strong quarterly performance after reporting a 93% year-on-year jump in consolidated net profit to ₹766 crore.
• Angel One: The retail brokerage posted an impressive 58% year-on-year surge in quarterly net profit, backed by elevated retail trading volumes.
• Jio Financial Services: Remains in focus as the market digests its quarterly results, which saw pressure on bottom-line numbers due to rising operational and expansion costs.
• Banking and NBFC Heavyweights: Public and private lenders will remain active following recent updates regarding foreign exchange derivative risk reserves and key earnings releases.
Key Events to Watch Today
• Q2 FY27 Earnings: Second-quarter corporate earnings announcements will dictate sector-specific trends, with major firms including DLF, LTIMindtree, and Punjab National Bank (PNB) set to announce or react to their performance figures....

Category: Markets
Shares of HDFC Life Insurance Company declined over 3% in intraday trade, hitting a low of ₹533 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) as investors digested the insurer's financial performance for the second quarter. The decline came despite steady headline numbers and an upbeat stance from major brokerage houses.
The stock has faced sustained pressure on the bourses, falling nearly 29% calendar year-to-date. The drop in the counter stood in contrast to the broader market trend, where the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 traded higher near the 23,140 level.
Key Q2 Earnings Highlights
HDFC Life reported a 13.6% year-on-year increase in net profit to ₹508 crore for the quarter ended September, up from ₹447.15 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
Financial and operational metrics for the quarter and half-year showed:

Brokerage Views and Outlook
Despite the initial negative market reaction, brokerage firms retained positive views on the stock, citing resilient business generation and manageable underwriting profitability.
Analysts at Systematix Institutional Research reiterated a Buy rating, raising the target price to ₹650 from ₹630. The brokerage noted that the insurer's Q2 VNB beat street expectations by 2.2% and rebounded 31.7% quarter-on-quarter off a lower base. Analysts also flagged the company's board approval to raise up to ₹500 crore via subordinated debt, which is expected to bolster the capital adequacy ratio by around 400 basis points ahead of the impending risk-based capital (RBC) framework rollout....

Rupee Gains 20 Paise to 94.79 Against US Dollar as RBI Forex Measures and Softer Greenback Lend Support
Category: Markets
The Indian rupee appreciated by 20 paise to trade at 94.79 against the US dollar in early deals on Friday, tracking weakness in the greenback and benefiting from the ongoing impact of regulatory foreign exchange measures initiated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the domestic unit opened on a firm footing at 94.75 before touching 94.79, logging a 20-paise gain over its previous close. On Thursday, the local currency had risen 18 paise to end the session at 94.99 against the American currency.
Macro Drivers Behind the Rupee's Rebound
The currency's upward trajectory was supported by a retreat in the US dollar index, lower US Treasury yields, and the Reserve Bank of India's active administrative and liquidity steps in the currency market. The central bank recently instituted targeted measures to curb speculative dollar demand, including a dedicated foreign exchange window for state-run oil marketing companies to shift bulk dollar purchases away from the spot market, tighter requirements on derivative exposures, and enhanced reserve conditions for large dollar transactions.
The dollar index, which gauges the greenback against a basket of six major global peers, fell 0.54 per cent to 102, lending breathing room to emerging market currencies.
"Decline in dollar index and softening of US treasury yields also supported the rupee. However, a surge in crude oil prices capped sharp gains. On the data front, US PPI (Producer Price Index) was hotter than expected while retail sales topped forecast. Weekly unemployment claims were in line with expectations," noted Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan.
External Headwinds and Equity Pressures
Despite the positive momentum, sharper advances in the domestic unit were restrained by elevated global energy prices and capital outflows from Indian financial markets.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded 0.54 per cent lower at USD 105.35 per barrel in futures trade but stayed at structurally high levels, posing ongoing current account challenges for India's import-heavy economy.
Domestic benchmark equity indices also experienced subdued early trading before attempting a recovery:
• The BSE Sensex initially dropped 113 points to 74,187 before recovering later in the day.
• The NSE Nifty 50 declined 27.20 points in early deals to 22,967.15.
• Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained consistent sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 5,285.37 crore on a net basis on Thursday, according to exchange figures.

Sensex Rebounds Over 500 Points From Intraday Low as Nifty Reclaims 23,050 Led by IT and Banking Giants
Category: Markets
Indian benchmark equity indices executed an emphatic intraday rebound, clawing back early losses as heavy buying in frontline technology, banking, and telecom majors pushed key gauges firmly into positive territory. The 30-share BSE Sensex surged more than 500 points from its intraday trough, while the NSE Nifty 50 breached and reclaimed the 23,050 level during afternoon trade.
The dramatic turnaround followed days of consolidation and persistent pressure from global uncertainties. Resilient domestic corporate earnings updates and selective institutional accumulation in beaten-down large-cap heavyweights catalyzed a wave of short-covering that swiftly altered the market trajectory.
Key Catalysts Behind the Market Recovery
• Rally in Heavyweight IT Stocks: The technology basket emerged as a primary growth engine. Counters such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, HCLTech, and Tech Mahindra witnessed consistent accumulation following robust quarterly deal pipeline announcements and earnings resilience, driving the Nifty IT index significantly higher.
• Banking and Blue-Chip Support: Benchmark heavyweights, including ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Industries, saw pronounced buying interest, providing the necessary mathematical weight to pull both the Sensex and Nifty out of morning slumps.
• Relief From Cooling Crude Prices: A pullback in international crude oil prices offered macroeconomic breathing space to energy importers like India, calming concerns regarding import bills and headline inflation.
• Derivatives Positioning and Expiry Short-Covering: Systematic short covering gathered steam as technical support zones held firm, prompting options sellers and traders caught on the wrong foot to rapidly unwind bearish bets.
Broader Market Divergence and Sectoral Trend
Despite the sharp rally across the frontline benchmarks, market breadth revealed notable divergence. While the Nifty Private Bank and Nifty IT indices gained nearly 2%, the broader market underperformed. Small-cap and micro-cap indices languished in negative territory, underscoring that institutional inflows were predominantly concentrated in defensive, large-cap names rather than high-beta segments.
Meanwhile, market anxiety receded as the India VIX volatility gauge softened, signaling reduced panic among market participants.
Outlook for Domestic Investors
Market analysts highlighted that while the reclaiming of 23,050 on the Nifty 50 represents an encouraging technical rebound, follow-through buying across broader market segments will be vital to establish lasting momentum. Investors are advised to closely monitor crude oil trajectories, foreign institutional investment flows, and ongoing second-quarter corporate earnings commentary before making aggressive directional commitments....

Indian Fund Houses Halt Fresh Investments in Gold ETF Fund of Funds on Regulatory Guidance
Category: Markets
Major Indian asset management companies have temporarily halted fresh subscriptions into Gold ETF Fund of Funds (FoFs) and combined Gold-Silver FoFs, effective October 16, 2026. The industry-wide restriction was initiated following communications from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) through the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
Leading fund houses—including ICICI Prudential AMC, HDFC AMC, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, Invesco India AMC, DSP Mutual Fund, and Tata Mutual Fund—issued addenda notifying unitholders of the operational curbs.
Why Fresh Investments Were Restricted
The temporary restrictions come right before the festive period of Dussehra and Diwali, a season historically characterized by a massive retail rush into bullion assets. In India, Gold FoFs serve as feeder funds that route investor capital into underlying Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
The primary catalysts behind the regulatory intervention include:
• Bullying Current Account Deficit: India relies predominantly on imports to satisfy domestic bullion requirements. When domestic retail funds experience massive cash inflows, mutual funds must create fresh ETF units, requiring physical gold procurement that directly increases the national bullion import bill.
• Currency and Macroeconomic Pressures: High import values exert structural pressure on foreign exchange reserves and weigh on the Indian rupee amid broader global volatility.
• Preemptive Demand Management: With official gold imports having moderated to $1.8 billion in September from $2.3 billion in August, regulators sought to prevent another unchecked spike in festive paper gold demand that could spill over into physical import surges.
Transactions That Are Barred
Asset managers have uniformly clarified that fresh inflows will not be accepted until further notice.
Suspended Transactions:
• Fresh lump-sum purchases and additional investments
• New Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) registrations
• New Systematic Transfer Plan (STP) registrations where the gold scheme is the destination
• Switch-in transactions from other mutual fund schemes
• Step-up or top-up facilities on existing SIP mandates
Applications received after the specified cut-off on October 15, 2026, are subject to rejection and subsequent refunds.
What Remains Operational for Investors
Existing unitholders do not need to resort to panic withdrawals, as the core investment structures and valuations remain fully market-linked.
Permitted Transactions:
• Existing SIPs and STPs: Systematic mandates registered prior to October 16, 2026, continue to be debited and allotted units at the applicable daily Net Asset Value (NAV)....

SEBI Extends IPO Fresh Issue Resizing Flexibility of Up to 50% Until March 2027
Category: Markets
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has extended a key regulatory relief that allows companies planning initial public offerings (IPOs) to adjust their fresh issue size by up to 50% without having to submit a fresh draft red herring prospectus (DRHP). Communicated to the Association of Investment Bankers of India (AIBI), the extension pushes the validity of the dispensation to offerings opening on or before March 31, 2027.
The relief was originally introduced by the markets regulator in April 2026 to help issuers navigate global volatility and geopolitical headwinds linked to the West Asia conflict. Under standard SEBI Issue of Capital and Disclosure Requirements (ICDR) norms, any change exceeding 20% in the estimated fresh issue size triggers the requirement to file a fresh draft offer document, a process that entails extensive procedural reviews, extended timelines, and fresh regulatory approvals.
With the previous relaxation window having lapsed on September 30, 2026, the six-month extension follows formal representations made by the AIBI regarding the operational difficulties faced by merchant bankers and corporates when managing size revisions amid rapidly shifting market sentiment.
Key Conditions for Issue Size Revision
While SEBI has relaxed the sizing threshold, the regulator has maintained strict safeguards to protect investor interests:
• Core Objectives Intact: The primary objects of the issue must remain unchanged despite any upward or downward revision.
• Mandatory Justification: Lead managers must provide clear justifications for the size variation and conduct necessary due diligence.
• Public Disclosures: Merchant bankers are required to update relevant sections of the draft offer document and issue a public addendum informing investors of the revised issue structure.
• Fresh Issue Specific: The relaxation applies strictly to the fresh capital issue component, through which the issuer raises capital for corporate use, and does not alter norms governing Offer for Sale (OFS) portions.
Impact on Primary Market Momentum
Welcoming the move, Mahavir Lunawat, Chairman of AIBI and Founder of Pantomath Financial Services Group, noted that IPO sizes frequently demand fine-tuning to reflect evolving business needs and secondary market valuations. He emphasized that the regulatory latitude reduces procedural hurdles and optimizes operational efficiency while maintaining transparent disclosure standards....

IDBI Bank Disinvestment to Conclude by Fiscal End Subject to RBI Approval
Category: Markets
The strategic disinvestment of IDBI Bank is slated for completion by the end of the current financial year (March 31, 2027), contingent upon regulatory clearance from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), according to Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) Secretary Arunish Chawla.
The announcement follows the Union Cabinet's approval to sell a controlling 60.72% stake in the lender to Canada's Fairfax Financial Holdings, led by Prem Watsa, for approximately ₹53,000 crore (around $5.5 billion). Under the approved transaction structure, Fairfax will acquire the Central Government's 30.48% stake for about ₹26,620 crore and Life Insurance Corporation of India's (LIC) 30.24% stake for about ₹26,440 crore. Fairfax offered ₹81 per share, surpassing the benchmark fair value of ₹75.99 per share established by independent valuers.
Key Procedural Milestones Ahead
The transaction will move through structured regulatory and legal gates before final transfer of control:
• Regulatory Dossier Submission: Fairfax must submit its technical papers, formal credentials, and compliance filings to the RBI to fulfill fit-and-proper criteria.
• Compliance and Glide Path: Under banking norms, promoter holdings must eventually cap at 26%. Fairfax has been granted up to 15 years to adhere to the glide path, alongside a mandatory five-year lock-in period.
• Share Purchase Agreement (SPA): Once the RBI grants clearance, the parties will officially sign the definitive SPA.
• Mandatory Open Offer: Following the execution of the SPA, the strategic buyer will trigger an open offer to IDBI Bank's public and minority shareholders under market takeover regulations.
• Resolution of CSB Bank Holding: Fairfax, which owns a controlling stake in Kerala-based CSB Bank, must either merge CSB Bank with IDBI Bank or exit its CSB Bank holding within two years.
Impact on Minority Shareholders and Employees
DIPAM Secretary Arunish Chawla assured that the interests of existing IDBI Bank employees and minority shareholders will remain safeguarded. Existing employee service terms will remain protected during and after the strategic transaction.
For public market participants, market regulators have also instructed LIC to pare down its residual holding in IDBI Bank from 19% to 15% post-privatisation. This reduction will inject an additional 4 percentage points into the lender's public float, increasing trading liquidity for retail and institutional investors on domestic bourses....
