FIIs Turn Net Buyers with ₹1,166 Crore Inflow as DIIs Book Profits in Volatile Session
Category: FII/DII Data
Market Snapshot
The Indian equity markets navigated an active trading session characterized by sharp institutional rotation and consolidation. Benchmark indices Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex hovered near key resistance bands following the previous session's surge, with traders closely tracking earnings releases and global market cues.
Market breadth showed sector-specific bifurcation:
•
Private banking, information technology, and auto counters sustained steady demand after solid quarterly corporate scorecards.
•
Public sector banking and select FMCG names witnessed moderate selling pressure as market participants took profits off the table.
•
Volatility remained anchored, with the India VIX holding comfortably around the 14-point mark, signaling contained systemic risk in the near term.
Institutional Flows: Cash Market
According to provisional exchange data across NSE, BSE, and MSEI for October 16, 2026, foreign portfolio investors snapped their extended streak of persistent selling to emerge as net buyers in the cash market:
• Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs/FPIs):
• Gross Purchases: ₹19,951.59 crore
• Gross Sales: ₹18,785.67 crore
•
Net Position: +₹1,165.92 crore
•
Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs):
• Gross Purchases: ₹17,201.80 crore
• Gross Sales: ₹20,863.08 crore
• Net Position: -₹3,661.28 crore
The shift in stance saw foreign funds providing a floor to the market, while domestic institutions—who had absorbed tens of thousands of crores in net purchases earlier in the month—capitalized on elevated prices to trim exposures and rebalance portfolios.
Derivatives Market Activity
In the Futures & Options (F&O) segment, institutional positioning signaled continued strategic hedging alongside targeted stock-specific longs:
•
Index Derivatives: Foreign institutions maintained a watchful posture on headline indices, deploying call hedges and adding downside buffer via put options. The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) hovered near 1.18, with the 22,500 zone serving as solid put-base support and 23,000 acting as the immediate call ceiling.
•
Stock Futures & Options: Stock-level participation revealed fresh long build-ups and delivery absorption in large-cap IT, private financial institutions, and capital goods. Short-covering emerged in select beaten-down energy and auto names, while unwinding was concentrated in select public sector lenders.
Key Drivers and Outlook
The institutional repositioning on October 16 reflects a confluence of domestic earnings catalysts and shifting global risk appetites:
•
Corporate Earnings Momentum: Q2 earnings updates showed robust revenue and operating margin resilience in sectors such as industrial manufacturing, private financials, and technology, encouraging foreign capital re-entry.

US Waives 100% Tariff Threat on Russian Oil Imports, Averting Sanctions Shock for India
Category: Markets
In a major geopolitical reprieve for New Delhi, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order implementing and immediately waiving punitive trade penalties under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The last-minute waiver averts secondary sanctions and tariffs of up to 100% that were slated to take effect on October 18, 2026, targeting the world's largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas.
The decision brings immediate relief to Indian refiners, equity benchmarks, and policymakers, eliminating a major threat to India’s bilateral exports and crude procurement strategy.
The Tariff Mechanism and the Waiver
Signed into law on September 18, 2026, the Graham Act mandated that the US administration impose duties within 30 days:
• An additional 100% tariff on goods imported into the US from the top five purchasers of Russian crude oil and natural gas if purchases continued after October 18, 2026.
• A 100% tariff hike on goods originating from the top five facilitators of Russian oil sanctions evasion.
• A 500% duty increase on direct imports from the Russian Federation.
However, under Section 4 of the newly signed executive order, President Trump formally suspended these measures, invoking statutory waiver authority. In his notification to the US Congress, Trump certified that issuing the waiver was in the "national interests of the United States". The suspension covers duties outlined under sections 112 and 113 as well as foreign-entity sanctions across multiple provisions of the Graham Act, remaining in place until reviewed by the US President, Secretary of State, and Treasury Secretary.
The order was issued just days before US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was scheduled to arrive in New Delhi, removing what could have been a contentious diplomatic obstacle.
Direct Implications for Indian Refiners and Markets
For Indian public sector refiners—including Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL)—alongside private refiners like Reliance Industries, the waiver prevents immediate supply bottlenecks and margin compressions.
Russia has consistently ranked as India's leading crude supplier over the past two years, with domestic refiners leveraging discounted barrels to maintain stable refining margins and contain pump prices at home. A 100% tariff on Indian merchandise exports to the US would have severely impacted Indian exporters across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods.

RBI Grants No Objection Certificate for REC Merger into Power Finance Corporation
Category: Markets
In a major step toward consolidating India's state-backed power infrastructure financiers, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a No Objection Certificate (NoC) for the proposed merger of REC Limited into Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC).
The regulatory clearance was communicated to the stock exchanges by REC and PFC following receipt of the central bank's communication dated October 15, 2026. The NoC was granted subject to specific instructions and conditions laid down by the banking regulator.
Structure and Share Swap Ratio
Under the proposed scheme of amalgamation, REC will act as the transferor company, while PFC will serve as the transferee entity. The respective boards of both state-run non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) approved the scheme on June 28, 2026.
The key parameters of the transaction include:
• Share Swap Ratio: Shareholders of REC will receive 88 fully paid-up equity shares of PFC (face value of ₹10 each) for every 100 fully paid-up equity shares held in REC (face value of ₹10 each).
• Record Date: The record date for determining the eligibility of REC shareholders will be decided and announced by the boards at a later stage.
• Legal Framework: The transaction is being executed under Sections 230–232 and other applicable provisions of the Companies Act, 2013.
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India is serving as the transaction and tax advisor, while Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas is acting as the legal advisor to both entities. Valuation assessments were jointly performed by RBSA Valuation Advisors and Ernst & Young Merchant Banking Services, with fairness opinions provided by SBI Capital Markets and Nuvama Wealth Management.
Scale and Strategic Significance
The amalgamation is designed to eliminate inter-corporate overlap and enhance capital efficiency across India's power finance architecture. PFC acquired a 52.63% controlling stake in REC from the Government of India in March 2019, turning REC into a subsidiary.
The full consolidation will create a mega-financier with an aggregate loan book exceeding ₹11 lakh crore. The unified balance sheet is positioned to play a vital financing role in India's massive capital expenditure plans for renewable energy, transmission infrastructure, and distribution sector reforms under the government's long-term energy transition targets.
Remaining Approvals and Next Steps
While the RBI’s conditional clearance removes the principal regulatory bottleneck in the financial sector, the transaction is not yet final.

Brent Crude Hits 110 Dollars a Barrel as Middle East Escalation and Russian Refinery Disruptions Rattle Indian Markets
Category: Markets
Global energy markets experienced a sharp escalation as Brent crude touched $110 a barrel for the first time since May, driven by worsening conflict in the Middle East and fresh disruptions to Russian fuel output. Brent crude futures surged 3.7%, or $3.94, to settle at $109.86 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 3.5%, or $3.44, to finish at $101.41 per barrel. Over the week, Brent advanced 4.9% and WTI rallied 10.4%.
The price surge comes on the back of rising geopolitical hazards across critical oil arteries and production hubs. A Saudi-led coalition confirmed the interception of a ballistic missile launched toward the Red Sea port of Yanbu, a key export route designed to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Simultaneously, tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf faces renewed threats amid intensified Iranian confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz. In Eastern Europe, a drone strike struck Russia's Ryazan refinery, knocking out a primary crude distillation unit and exacerbating global diesel supply deficits.
Implications for the Indian Economy
India is particularly vulnerable to spikes in international crude benchmarks because the country imports over 85% of its crude oil requirements. At $110 a barrel, India faces renewed macroeconomic pressures across foreign exchange, fiscal balances, and domestic inflation:
Key Macroeconomic Pressures:
• Current Account Deficit (CAD): Every $10 per barrel increase in international crude prices typically widens India's current account deficit by approximately 40 to 50 basis points of GDP and inflates the annual import bill by upwards of $12 billion to $15 billion.
• Currency Volatility: Elevated crude import costs increase dollar outflows, exerting downward pressure on the Indian rupee against the US dollar and forcing intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
• Inflationary Headwinds: Sustained elevated crude prices raise logistics and input costs across manufacturing, threatening the RBI's retail inflation targets and potentially delaying interest rate easing cycles.
Sector and Stock Impact on Dalal Street
The sharp rebound in benchmark crude prices generates mixed outcomes across domestic equities, establishing clear dividing lines between upstream gainers and margin-sensitive consumers.
Impact Across Sectors:
• Upstream Producers (Gainers): Upstream exploration companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited benefit directly from higher net crude realisations, supporting earnings per share despite windfall tax considerations....

IMF Raises India FY27 GDP Growth Forecast to 7% on Strong Domestic Demand
Category: Markets
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sharply raised its economic growth projection for India for the fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27) to 7.0%, up from 6.4% projected in its July assessment. In its latest World Economic Outlook update, the Washington-based lender also increased its projection for FY28 by 30 basis points to 7.0%, signaling confidence that India's domestic growth cycle has durability beyond short-term quarterly fluctuations.
The multilateral agency pointed out that India remains a clear outperformer among major world economies, expanding at more than double the projected global pace of 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027.
Key Drivers Behind the Upward Revision
The IMF highlighted several fundamental tailwinds powering the Indian economy despite geopolitical tensions and volatile energy markets:
• Resilient Domestic Consumption: Household spending and private consumption continue to form a solid cushion against softer external trade conditions.
• Services Sector Strength: Sustained expansion across financial services, real estate, IT, and professional services gross value added continues to outpace wider economic benchmarks.
• Capital Formation: Official data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) showed India grew by 7.8% in the April-June 2026 quarter (Q1 FY27), supported by an 11.9% year-on-year surge in gross fixed capital formation.
• Structural Reforms & Demographics: A large, expanding domestic consumer base alongside supply-side structural reforms continues to draw long-term capital.
Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, noted that India entered the recent period of energy shocks with strong fundamentals, sound fiscal prudence, and robust underlying momentum. He added that intermittent currency fluctuations reflect shifting global interest rate differentials and crude prices rather than any structural weakness in the Indian economy.
Convergence Among Multilateral Agencies and Regulators
The IMF’s revised assessment closely aligns with recent upgrades by domestic and multilateral institutions:
• Reserve Bank of India (RBI): The Indian central bank upgraded its FY27 GDP growth forecast to 7.1% at its October monetary policy meeting.
• World Bank and OECD: Both institutions revised their FY27 projections for India to 7.1%.
• Credit Rating Agencies: Moody’s Ratings and S&P Global Ratings maintain India's FY27 growth outlook at 7.0%.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) subsidiary Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL) has officially set the price band for its landmark initial public offering (IPO) at ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per equity share. The issue committee of the company's board approved the band following the submission of its Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) to the Registrar of Companies in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
At the upper price boundary, the company aims to raise ₹30,213 crore, establishing the issue as the largest public offering in Indian capital market history. The size eclipses the previous benchmark set in October 2024 by Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,858.75 crore offering, as well as Life Insurance Corporation of India's (LIC) ₹20,557.23 crore issue in 2022.
Issue Details and Valuation
While the fundraise establishes a new record for domestic primary markets, the pricing landed below aggressive Street expectations, which had projected an issue size between ₹33,000 crore and ₹38,000 crore with valuations formerly speculated as high as $170 billion. At ₹1,119 per share, the company is valued at roughly ₹10.3 lakh crore (approximately $108 billion). Analysts noted that this measured valuation reset could provide healthier pricing support for secondary market entry, avoiding the listing-day pressures seen in previous mega-IPOs.
Unlike earlier marquee offerings that were largely government or promoter divestments through an Offer for Sale (OFS), the Jio Platforms IPO consists entirely of a fresh issue of up to 27 crore equity shares with a face value of ₹10 each. Consequently, all proceeds will flow directly into the company.
Key IPO Dates and Bidding Parameters:
• Anchor Investor Bidding Date: October 19
• Bid/Issue Opening Date: October 21
• Bid/Issue Closing Date: October 23
• Proposed Listing Date: October 28 on the BSE and the NSE
• Minimum Bid Lot: 12 equity shares (requiring ₹12,780 at the floor and ₹13,428 at the cap price) and in multiples of 12 thereafter
Quota Allocations and Shareholder Reservations
Under the allocation framework, not more than 50% of the net issue is allocated to Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs), while not less than 35% is reserved for Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) and 15% for Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs).
The offering also includes structured reservations for corporate stakeholders:
• Reliance Shareholders Reservation: Equity shares aggregating up to ₹2,500 crore are reserved for eligible individual investors and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) holding RIL shares as of the RHP filing date, October 14....

RBI Fixes SGB 2020-21 Series VII Premature Redemption Price at ₹14,614 Offering Up to 192% Gains
Category: Markets
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the premature redemption price and date for the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2020-21 Series VII tranche, setting the redemption value at ₹14,614 per unit. The move delivers substantial gains of over 192% to investors who entered the scheme upon issuance six years ago.
According to the central bank, the due date for premature redemption has been fixed for October 19, 2026. While the regular interest payment date falls on October 20, the exit window was adjusted to October 19 because October 20 is an official holiday on account of Dussehra.
Stellar Returns on Gold Investment
The SGB 2020-21 Series VII tranche was originally issued on October 20, 2020, by the RBI on behalf of the Government of India. At that time, the Ministry of Finance set the issue price at ₹5,051 per gram for conventional applications, while investors applying and paying digitally received a ₹50 discount, bringing their acquisition cost to ₹5,001 per gram.
Based on the newly announced redemption price of ₹14,614:
• Online Investors: Those who subscribed digitally at ₹5,001 per gram lock in an absolute gain of ₹9,613 per unit, representing a return of 192.22%.
• Offline Investors: Those who purchased bonds at ₹5,051 per gram achieve a gain of ₹9,563 per unit, translating into an absolute return of 189.33%.
These gains reflect only capital appreciation. Over the entire holding period, bondholders have also received a sovereign-backed interest payout of 2.5% per annum on their initial investment, credited semi-annually.
How the Exit Price Was Determined
Under the governing terms of the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption is permitted after the fifth year from the date of issuance, specifically on dates when interest becomes payable.
The redemption price is benchmarked against domestic physical gold prices. The RBI computes the exit value using a simple average of the closing prices of gold of 999 purity published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA) over the three business days preceding the redemption date. For this tranche, the RBI based the ₹14,614 price on the closing prices recorded on October 14, October 15, and October 16, 2026.
Choices Ahead for Bondholders...

Indian Bank Warns of Profitability Hit as RBI Mandates 20 Percent Forex Risk Reserve
Category: Markets
Public sector lender Indian Bank has flagged that its profitability could face pressure following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) newly mandated Foreign Exchange Risk Reserve (FERR) requirement, which forces lenders to park substantial funds without earning any interest.
Speaking on the operational fallout of the central bank's directives, Binod Kumar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Indian Bank, stated that while the new guidelines will not directly hit foreign exchange income itself, locking in mandatory cash reserves will inevitably drive up funding costs.
"The new norms will not directly affect forex income," Kumar told PTI. "However, the requirement to maintain a reserve of 20 per cent of the notional value of certain forex transactions could increase costs, which may impact overall profitability."
Understanding the RBI's FERR Framework
The RBI announced sweeping regulatory measures to rein in sharp volatility and curb speculative trading positions in the rupee. As part of these regulations, the central bank introduced the FERR framework alongside tighter derivative exposure rules.
Under clarified operational guidelines released by the central bank:
• Banks must set aside a non-interest-bearing cash reserve equal to 20% of the rupee equivalent of the notional value on eligible derivative contracts involving the purchase of foreign currency against the rupee.
• For instance, on a derivative contract carrying a notional amount of $10 million executed at Rs 95 per dollar (notional value of Rs 95 crore), the lending institution must park Rs 19 crore in unremunerated reserves with the RBI.
• The central bank reduced the threshold for foreign exchange derivative transactions permitted without underlying exposure from $100 million to $5 million.
• The regulator prohibited the rebooking of cancelled rupee-linked foreign exchange derivative contracts, while keeping rollovers at maturity intact under existing rules.
• Minimum daily Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) maintenance was hiked from 90% to 99% of prescribed obligations, curbing banks' ability to dynamically park surplus liquidity in short-term yield-generating instruments.
Forex Income Surges on Currency Volatility
The regulatory changes follow a bumper quarter for Indian Bank's treasury desk. During the July–September quarter (Q2), the lender saw its foreign exchange income jump by 108.12% year-on-year to Rs 311 crore, compared to Rs 149 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. On a sequential basis, forex income grew 10.60%....

SEBI Panel Backs 30-Minute VWAP Settlement for Derivatives as Market Pushes Back Against Closing Auction Pricing
Category: Markets
In a significant relief to traders and domestic brokerages, a Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) advisory panel has recommended retaining the traditional 30-minute Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) methodology for determining expiry-day settlement prices in stock and index derivatives, stepping back from the full application of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) for contract settlement.
The recommendation follows extensive market feedback, including nearly 20,000 public responses to a consultation paper issued by SEBI on September 12, 2026. Participants overwhelmingly highlighted that calculating derivatives expiry settlements based on the Indicative Equilibrium Price (IEP) generated during the CAS led to sharp price swings, lower liquidity, and severe execution risks in the final hour of trade.
Pushback Against the Closing Auction Framework
The regulator initially rolled out the Closing Auction Session on August 3, 2026, across the futures and options (F&O) universe to improve cash-market closing price discovery and align domestic bourses with global exchanges like the NYSE and LSE. However, the shift triggered unintended disruption on expiry days.
Traders noted that index prices frequently fluctuated by around 1% during the auction window due to concentrated order imbalances and low liquidity, making it exceedingly hazardous for options sellers to write contracts or hold overnight positions into the close. As volumes dropped, market participants urged SEBI to decouple cash-market closing prices from derivatives settlement.
Under the panel's backed framework, the settlement price of index derivatives will continue to track the underlying index value computed using the VWAP of constituent shares between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM during the continuous trading session. Similarly, clearing corporations will determine settlement prices for expiring stock derivatives using the 30-minute VWAP of the underlying equities across exchanges.
Key Framework and Timing Adjustments
While retaining VWAP for derivatives settlement, SEBI has refined the operating parameters for CAS in the equity cash segment, which remains intact for discovering official stock closing prices.
Major Operational Changes:
• Normal continuous trading in equities will run up to 3:30 PM, after which a 10-minute CAS will operate between 3:30 PM and 3:40 PM on all trading days.
• Between 3:30 PM and 3:31 PM, exchanges will run a reference-price calculation window using the 15-minute VWAP of continuous trade, followed by order entry for limit and market orders until 3:36 PM.
• Only limit orders will be permitted between 3:36 PM and random closure between 3:38 PM and 3:40 PM, preventing last-second cancellations....

Axis Bank Q2 Net Profit Jumps 38% to Rs 7,003 Crore as NII Beats Estimates
Category: Markets
Private sector lender Axis Bank announced its financial results for the second quarter (Q2 FY27), posting a standalone net profit of Rs 7,003 crore. The figure represents an increase of nearly 38% compared to the Rs 5,089 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.
While bottom-line growth remained robust, net profit slightly trailed Street expectations, missing the consensus poll estimate of Rs 7,132 crore by roughly 1.8%. However, core operations showed notable resilience, supported by healthier asset quality metrics and lower provisions.
Key Earnings Highlights
Financial Performance:
• Net Profit: Rose 37.6% year-on-year to Rs 7,003.3 crore compared to Rs 5,090 crore in Q2 FY26.
• Net Interest Income (NII): Increased 11.8% year-on-year to Rs 15,372 crore, up from Rs 13,744 crore in the year-ago period. This beat analyst expectations, including the CNBC-TV18 estimate of Rs 14,970 crore and the Bloomberg estimate of Rs 15,259 crore.
• Net Interest Margin (NIM): Reported at 3.36% for the quarter.
• Provisions: Total provisions dropped significantly to Rs 1,694 crore, down from Rs 2,223 crore in the preceding quarter and Rs 3,547 crore in Q2 FY26.
Asset Quality Strengthens
The bank witnessed sequential as well as annual improvements across its bad loan portfolios. Gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) and net non-performing assets (NNPAs) both trended downward during the three months ended September.
Bad Loan Metrics:
• Gross NPA Ratio: Stood at 1.16%, improving from 1.28% in the June quarter and 1.46% reported in the previous year.
• Net NPA Ratio: Eased to 0.35%, compared to 0.39% in the prior quarter.
• Absolute Gross NPAs: Declined to Rs 16,778 crore against Rs 17,124.3 crore sequentially.
• Absolute Net NPAs: Contracted to Rs 5,054 crore from Rs 5,192.6 crore in the first quarter.
Market Context and Sector Impact
Axis Bank's operational performance reflects broader stability in India's commercial banking environment, where disciplined underwriting and lower credit costs have helped cushion margins against competitive deposit repricing.
The higher-than-expected NII is expected to offer support to banking counters on Dalal Street when markets resume trading on Monday, with investors closely watching management commentary regarding loan disbursement trends, deposit growth, and full-year margin guidance....

Tanker Hit off Saudi Coast Spurs Fresh Persian Gulf Supply Worries for Dalal Street
Category: Markets
Global energy markets face fresh geopolitical friction following an attack on a commercial tanker off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia. According to advisories issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel was struck by an unknown projectile approximately 68 nautical miles (about 125 kilometres) northeast of the key industrial and port city of Al Jubail.
The incident occurred at approximately 0900 GMT on Friday. UKMTO confirmed that all crew members were safely evacuated from the vessel with no casualties reported, and no immediate environmental damage was detected. Nonetheless, the targeted strike inside the Persian Gulf represents an escalation in maritime supply risks along one of the world's most critical crude transit corridors.
Direct Implications for India's Crude Import Basket
For Indian market participants, maritime disruption in the Persian Gulf is an immediate trigger for macro volatility. India imports more than 85% of its crude oil requirements, with major suppliers including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the UAE routing shipments through the Persian Gulf and surrounding straits.
Any disruption or perceived military risk in these waters results in tangible cost escalations:
• War-Risk Insurance Premiums: Marine insurers typically adjust hull and machinery war-risk rates immediately following projectile attacks on commercial vessels, raising landing costs for Indian refiners.
• Freight and Tanker Rates: Higher risk perceptions reduce available vessel supply and drive up spot charter rates for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) and Suezmax tankers operating in the region.
• Landed Crude Cost: A sustained geopolitical premium on benchmark Brent directly inflates India's crude import bill, exerting depreciation pressure on the Indian rupee and widening the trade deficit.
Sectoral Impact on Indian Equities
The escalation has distinct ramifications across several segments tracked by domestic investors:
Downstream Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs):
Shares of state-owned refiners—including Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)—typically face margin compression during crude rallies. If international crude prices surge while domestic pump prices remain capped, auto-fuel marketing margins face sharp erosion.
Upstream Producers:
Exploration and production majors such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) generally witness positive sentiment during crude spikes due to higher net realisations on their upstream output, offering a defensive hedge on Dalal Street.
Logistics and Shipping:
Domestic shipping and offshore logistical operators could face route realignments, stringent vessel security mandates, and heightened compliance protocols across Gulf operations....

SEBI Proposes Overhaul of SME IPO Norms by Slashing Application Size to Rs 1 Lakh and Raising Allottees to 500
Category: Markets
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed an extensive overhaul of the regulatory framework governing initial public offerings (IPOs) by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Through a consultation paper issued on October 14, 2026, the capital markets regulator outlined measures aimed at lowering entry barriers for retail investors, expanding the investor base, and aligning segment guidelines closer to the mainboard framework.
The market regulator has invited comments and suggestions from stakeholders on the proposed amendments through November 4, 2026.
Lower Application Ticket Size and Higher Allottee Count
Under the existing framework, the minimum application size for SME IPOs was set at Rs 2 lakh. SEBI has now proposed lowering the minimum application value to Rs 1 lakh. Under the new structure, an application would comprise four lots of at least Rs 25,000 each, with subsequent bids permitted in multiples of the lot size.
Simultaneously, SEBI proposes to raise the minimum number of allottees in an SME public issue from 200 to 500. Retail individual investors will receive at least one minimum lot, subject to availability, while the balance of shares will be allotted on a proportionate basis rather than strictly in minimum-lot multiples. The shift is designed to reduce concentration risks, encourage wider retail and non-institutional distribution, and improve post-listing share price discovery.
One-Share Trading Lots and Scrapping Market Making
To address liquidity concerns in secondary trading on SME platforms, SEBI has proposed abolishing the pre-defined, price-band-dependent lot system. Instead, securities listed on SME exchanges would trade with a lot size of just one share, matching the secondary market trading mechanism of the mainboard.
In addition, SEBI recommended removing the compulsory three-year market-making obligation for SME listings. Currently, merchant bankers or dedicated market makers are required to provide two-way quotes and ensure continuous liquidity for three years post-listing, a requirement that imposes substantial costs on smaller businesses.
Key Proposals in the SEBI Consultation Paper:
• Application Threshold: Minimum application size reduced from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 1 lakh, split into four lots of Rs 25,000 each.
• Minimum Allottees: Increased from 200 to 500 to expand the ownership base.
• Secondary Market Trading: Replacement of bundled lot trading with single-share trading lots.
• Market-Making Relief: Elimination of mandatory three-year market making for issuers.
• Underwriting Standards: Scrapping of 100% compulsory underwriting, introducing a standard 90% minimum subscription requirement....

HDFC Bank Posts Q2 Net Profit of ₹19,510 Crore as Slumping Treasury Income Offsets Credit Growth
Category: Markets
India's largest private-sector lender, HDFC Bank, reported its second-quarter financial results for the quarter ended September 30, posting a standalone net profit of ₹19,510 crore (₹195.10 billion). The bottom-line figure marks a 4.7% increase compared to ₹18,641 crore recorded in the year-earlier period.
However, the earnings narrowly missed market expectations, with analyst consensus compiled by LSEG forecasting a net profit of ₹19,526 crore. The modest profit expansion was largely attributed to a steep contraction in treasury gains, which eclipsed double-digit balance sheet expansion.
Key Earnings Highlights
• Net Profit: Rose 4.7% year-on-year to ₹19,510 crore from ₹18,641 crore.
• Net Interest Income (NII): Expanded 9.7% year-on-year to ₹34,619 crore.
• Other Income: Declined 3.6% year-on-year to ₹13,831 crore.
• Treasury Trading Gains: Slumped to ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore in the same period last year.
• Gross Advances: Expanded 16.3% year-on-year across retail and corporate segments.
• Deposits: Grew 18.8% year-on-year.
• Credit-to-Deposit (C/D) Ratio: Stood at 96.0% at the end of the quarter.
Treasury Drag and Non-Interest Income
The bank's other income line fell 3.6% year-on-year to ₹13,831 crore, primarily dragged down by treasury trading profits that tumbled to ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.
Core non-interest operational streams remained resilient: fees and commissions increased to ₹9,690 crore from ₹8,840 crore, while foreign exchange and derivative revenues softened marginally to ₹1,550 crore from ₹1,590 crore.
Balance Sheet Growth and Asset Quality
HDFC Bank sustained healthy credit growth in line with broader trends across Indian commercial banks. Gross advances grew 16.3% year-on-year, supported by broad-based corporate and retail demand. Total deposits rose by 18.8%, helping the bank maintain its credit-to-deposit ratio at 96.0%.
Asset quality indicators improved over the preceding quarter:
• The gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio improved to 1.11% as of September 30, down from 1.17% at the end of June.
• Provisions for potential bad loans and contingencies rose 2.1% year-on-year to ₹3,574 crore (₹35.74 billion), compared to the previous year.
Leadership Transition
The quarterly performance arrives ahead of a pivotal management change at the Mumbai-based lender. Anup Bagchi, a veteran of the ICICI group, will take charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a three-year tenure effective October 27.
Bagchi becomes HDFC Bank's first external chief executive, stepping into the role amid continued investor focus on the bank's operational profitability, post-merger integration milestones, and credit-to-deposit balancing....

Supertanker Carrying 2 Million Barrels Explodes in Strait of Hormuz After Striking Mine, Heightening Energy Risks for India
Category: Markets
An oil supertanker carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil exploded and caught fire after striking a naval mine while attempting to transit the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy confirmed on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
According to statements released by the IRGC through Iranian state media, the vessel had disabled its positioning and radar systems in an effort to bypass designated checkpoints and navigate an unauthorized route through the waterway. The IRGC reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed under its regulations, warning commercial vessels that unauthorized transit attempts relying on foreign military protection would face severe consequences.
The explosion marks a dangerous escalation in maritime hostilities around the narrow chokepoint between Iran and Oman, an artery that historically accounts for roughly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum and liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows.
Direct Implications for India's Energy Security
For India, the world’s third-largest crude importer, any sustained disruption or physical hazard within the Strait of Hormuz represents an acute economic threat. India imports over 85% of its crude oil requirements, with major West Asian suppliers including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar routing cargoes through the Persian Gulf and Hormuz.
While Indian refiners have increasingly diversified crude sourcing toward Russian and African grades over the past two years, Middle Eastern sour crude remains the foundational baseload feedstock for public and private refining configurations across the country. A blockage or mine threat in the corridor immediately jeopardizes prompt deliveries of crude oil as well as long-term LNG contracts vital for India's city gas distribution networks and fertilizer manufacturing plants.
Pressure Points for Indian Refiners and Dalal Street
The incident injects substantial volatility into global energy benchmarks, with immediate downstream consequences for Indian financial markets:
Key Impacts on Indian Markets:
• Margin Squeeze on Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs): State-owned refiners such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) face rising procurement costs. If retail fuel prices remain capped domestically, elevated landed crude costs will depress gross refining margins (GRMs) and marketing profitability.
• Escalating Freight and Insurance Premiums: Marine insurers have expanded high-risk zone classifications across the Gulf, prompting a steep hike in additional war-risk premiums and tanker charter rates. These surcharges directly increase the landed cost per barrel for Indian buyers....

HDFC Bank Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha Resigns as Lender Seeks RBI Nod for December 31 Exit
Category: Markets
In a major top-management reshuffle at India's largest private sector lender, HDFC Bank announced on Saturday, October 17, 2026, that its Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha has decided to step down from his role. The lender confirmed that Bharucha has requested cessation from the service of the bank with effect from the close of business hours on December 31, 2026.
The bank's Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board of Directors accepted his request during meetings held on October 16 and October 17, respectively. The board has resolved to forward the decision to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for regulatory clearance.
Leadership Transition at the Country's Largest Lender
Bharucha’s planned exit arrives just days before ICICI Group veteran Anup Bagchi takes charge as the bank's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer on October 27, 2026. Bagchi succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose tenure concludes on October 26 after he opted against seeking reappointment earlier this year.
Bharucha, 60, was widely viewed as a leading internal candidate for the MD & CEO position and had been recommended by the bank's board. However, the central bank cleared Bagchi for a three-year term at the helm, prompting a broader top-deck recalibration at the institution.
Three Decades of Institutional Stewardship
Bharucha joined HDFC Bank in October 1995, spending over 31 years shaping the lender's operational footprint. He was elevated to the board of directors as a whole-time director in 2014 and later assumed the role of Deputy Managing Director in April 2023.
Throughout his tenure, he played an instrumental role in steering the bank’s corporate banking, business banking, healthcare finance, rural banking, and core credit operations. In its regulatory disclosure, the board placed on record its deep appreciation for his contributions over three decades, particularly commending his foundational role in building the lender's robust credit architecture, which remains a benchmark for the Indian banking system.
Key Responsibilities Held by Kaizad Bharucha:
• Managing and scaling the wholesale and corporate banking portfolios.
• Structuring credit architecture and risk underwriting frameworks across corporate and retail lending divisions.
• Leading key specialized lending verticals, including business banking, infrastructure finance, and rural banking.
Earnings Performance Amid Board Changes
The leadership announcement coincided with HDFC Bank's second-quarter earnings release for the July–September 2026 quarter. The bank delivered a steady operating performance, reflecting resilience despite executive transitions:
• Standalone net profit rose 4.7% year-on-year to ₹19,510 crore....

Reliance Trims Jio Platforms IPO Size by 14% to 27 Crore Shares as Brownsville Refinery Talks Advance in Jamnagar
Category: Markets
In a pivotal dual development for India's capital markets and the energy sector, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has refined the structure of its mega public listing while making headway on its overseas downstream commitments. The conglomerate has adjusted the issue size of the much-anticipated Jio Platforms initial public offering (IPO) downward by approximately 14%, capping the issue at up to 27 crore (270 million) fresh equity shares.
The revised issue, scheduled to open for subscription between October 21 and October 23, 2026, is structured purely as a fresh issuance of equity, with no offer-for-sale (OFS) component from existing RIL shareholders. Even with the 14% reduction, the estimated 3.2 billion dollar (around ₹26,500 crore) mop-up positions Jio Platforms to become the largest-ever public issue in Indian stock market history, surpassing previous domestic primary market records.
Primary Market Dynamics: Debt Reduction and Shareholder Allocations
The capital raised from the 27 crore newly issued shares will be deployed primarily toward prepaying outstanding debt at subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, as well as meeting general corporate requirements. Market participants view the absence of an OFS as a strong vote of confidence by parent RIL, which retains its equity exposure intact rather than monetising holdings into the market.
To drive broad domestic participation, RIL has instituted structured allocations across retail, eligible group shareholders, and corporate employees. RIL has encouraged its roughly 420,000-strong workforce to participate, even advancing October salaries by approximately 15 days to provide liquidity for staff looking to bid in the offering.
Key Takeaways for Indian Market Participants:
• Listing Schedule: Jio Platforms IPO bidding is scheduled for October 21–23, 2026.
• Offering Structure: Scaled down ~14% to up to 27 crore fresh shares with zero secondary share sales by existing promoters.
• Capital Deployment: Proceeds earmarked for deleveraging Reliance Jio Infocomm’s debt obligations and general corporate purposes.
• Employee and Shareholder Quotas: Specific reservations created alongside the retail bucket, supported by early salary disbursements.
Jamnagar Talks on the $300B Texas Refining Project
Parallel to domestic primary market preparations, global attention is focused on RIL’s Jamnagar refining complex. Top-level bilateral engagements involving US officials and Reliance executives are taking place from October 18 to 22 to deliberate on the planned oil refinery at the Port of Brownsville, Texas....
