"Bybit’s $1.46B Catastrophe Unleashed: Lazarus Group’s Sinister Plot to Smuggle It to Pyongyang"

Background
North Korea’s Lazarus Group is a global hacking menace, tied to the Reconnaissance General Bureau. Since 2007, they’ve unleashed chaos—Sony Pictures (2014), WannaCry (2017)—and pivoted to crypto since 2017, looting Youbit ($70M), Coincheck ($530M), and more for over $3B. That dwarfs North Korea’s $142M annual exports, fueling nukes and missiles while dodging sanctions.

Incident Overview
On February 21, 2025, Bybit suffered the worst crypto heist ever—$1.46 billion (1.9T KRW) vanished. The loot: 401,346 ETH ($1.12B), 90,376 stETH ($253M), 15,000 cmETH ($44M), 8,000 mETH ($23M). ZachXBT and Arkham Intelligence pinned it on Lazarus Group via on-chain forensics.
It happened during a transfer from Bybit’s ETH multisig cold wallet to a warm wallet. Hackers faked the signing interface, rewrote smart contract logic, and funneled everything to 0x47666Fab8bd0Ac7003bce3f5C3585383F09486E2 under a legit-looking mask. Bybit CEO Ben Zhou insists hot and other cold wallets are safe, but ETH crashed 3% to $2,640, shaking markets. Bybit, with $20B in assets, promises 1:1 backing and a bridge loan for 80% of the loss.

Lazarus Group’s Cash-Out Game Plan
Lazarus Group is already scheming to turn this $1.46B into Pyongyang’s cash pile. Their laundering plan is slick and brutal—here’s the breakdown.

🔴 Slicing the Loot
Within 24 hours, the $1.46B was split across 49+ addresses (e.g., 0xcEA1A76f2d8e0881b9b185F229e49E3928d37A04). Arkham Intelligence saw over $200M in stETH swapped to ETH, cut into 500-1,000 ETH chunks to evade tracking. It’s straight out of their Ronin playbook ($625M, 2022), where they diced funds across 100+ addresses in 48 hours.

🟠 Mixing Madness
Next, it’ll hit DEXs like Uniswap or PancakeSwap, flipping to USDT or Tron. Cross-chain bridges might move it from Ethereum to Tron or Bitcoin. Pre-2022 sanctions, they relied on Tornado Cash—now it’s Sinbad.io or newer mixers. Elliptic nabbed $24.2M from a 2024 hack heading to Sinbad, and Chainalysis says 60%+ of Atomic Wallet’s $100M (2023) hit Tron. They target blockchains that kill traces.

🟡 OTC Cash Grab
The mixed funds will flow to OTC desks in lax spots like Huione Pay in Cambodia or Southeast Asian hubs. Shell companies or random accounts will cash out via wires, drops, or deals with Russian/Chinese dark pool traders. Elliptic traced $35M from Horizon Bridge ($100M, 2022) exiting OTC, with Thailand cash drops. At least $500M could hit OTC here, wiped clean by middlemen.

🟢 Pyongyang Payday
Cashed out, it’s Pyongyang-bound for nukes and regime survival. TRM Labs says Lazarus Group has nabbed $2B+ since 2018, including $1B in 2022—way past North Korea’s $142M exports. A 2023 UN report links this to missile tests ($600M/year) and cyber ops. This $1.46B could bankroll their economy for years.

Why This Feels Familiar
Atomic Wallet ($100M, 2023), Ronin ($625M, 2022), and KuCoin ($280M, 2020) all fit the pattern: key theft via social engineering, multi-layer mixing, OTC exits. Bybit’s hit exposes exchange flaws—without tougher multisig, real-time tracking, and phishing defenses, Lazarus Group keeps winning.

🟠 믹싱 작업
분산된 자금은 Uniswap 또는 PancakeSwap과 같은 DEX에서 USDT나 Tron으로 전환될 가능성이 높습니다. 또한, 크로스체인 브릿지를 통해 Ethereum에서 Tron 또는 Bitcoin으로 이동할 수 있습니다. 과거에는 Tornado Cash를 활용했으나, 2022년 미국 제재 이후 Sinbad.io 같은 새로운 믹서를 사용하고 있습니다. 🟡 OTC 현금화
