Demo first: a 7-day checklist before you go live

A week on a demo account won't prove a robot is profitable. It will show whether your setup works, and that's where most early losses come from.

Day 1. Install and switch on: Algo Trading is green and the robot's icon on the chart is active.
Day 2. Read the logs: no repeating errors on the Experts and Journal tabs.
Day 3. First trades: only on the symbols you chose, one robot per symbol.
Day 4. Count the costs: spread plus commission on a few closed trades.
Day 5. Keep it online: the terminal ran through the night, no sleep, no restarts.

Spread + commission: what one trade really costs

Every trade starts in the red by its cost. It has two parts:
• Spread, the gap between the buy and sell price, paid when you enter.
• Commission, charged per lot on the way in and again on the way out.

Together they make the round-turn cost per lot. On our clients' real trades we measured anything from about $2 per lot at one broker to $14–15 on an account sold as "raw". Same robot, same trades, about seven times the cost.

For a robot that aims for a few pips a trade, that gap decides everything. At 0.01 lot a $15 round turn is $0.15 per trade; over 1,000 trades a month it's $150 before the strategy has made a single pip.

Where to see it in MT5: commission per deal on the History tab, the live spread in Market Watch (right-click → Columns → Spread).

What to do: ask your broker in writing for the commission per lot, per side, and check it against your first trades.

VPS or home PC: keeping a robot online 24/5

A robot trades only while its terminal is open and connected. Three ways to keep it there:

• Your own PC. Works if it never sleeps, doesn't restart for updates and keeps a stable connection.
• A Windows VPS. A rented Windows machine in a data centre, on around the clock. Pick one close to London: many brokers' servers and our AI model are there.
• MQL5's built-in VPS. Not for our robots. It doesn't allow DLLs, and our robots use one to talk to our AI model.

Whichever you choose:
• Windows 10 or 11;
• updates scheduled for the weekend, when markets are closed;
• Algo Trading still green after any restart;
• MetaTrader 5 set to start with Windows.

What to do: run your demo week on the machine you'll trade on. The Journal tab will show every disconnect.

Your first hour with MT5: 8 settings to check

Our Windows app installs MetaTrader 5 and the robot for you. If you set things up yourself, or something looks off, check these:

1. Algo Trading on the toolbar is green.
2. Allow DLL imports is ticked (Tools → Options → Expert Advisors). Our robots need it.
3. The robot's icon in the chart corner shows it's active.
4. Exact symbol name. Some brokers add a suffix, like EURUSD.m or XAUUSD+.
5. Lot step. 0.01 is the minimum on most accounts, and it sets your smallest possible risk.
6. Server time. Trades at night your time may be daytime on the server.
7. Experts and Journal tabs. Read them first whenever something seems wrong.
8. One robot per symbol per account, or they'll close each other's trades.

Drawdown math: why −50% needs +100% to recover

Losses and gains aren't symmetric. After a loss the account is smaller, so it needs a bigger gain to get back:

−10% → +11%
−20% → +25%
−30% → +43%
−50% → +100%
−60% → +150%

That's why risk per trade matters more than win rate. At 1% risk per trade, ten losses in a row cost about 10% of the account. At 5%, the same streak costs about 40%.

What to do: decide the drawdown you can sit through before you start, then size the risk to it. A demo shows how deep a strategy's dips go without paying for the lesson.

One strong day covers a run of weak ones. That's normal for trading. What matters is that the weak days stay small.
