🇸🇦 Bug in the boardroom: OpenAI spy case takes Saudi twist - report
A former OpenAI employee accused of planting a hidden microphone in a restricted conference room was allegedly in contact with a member of the Saudi royal family about job opportunities in the kingdom, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing federal prosecutors.
🔴 Prosecutors say Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, hid a thumb-sized circuit board and microphone behind a wall-mounted TV in a restricted OpenAI conference room around September 28. Executives had reportedly met government officials there around the same time
🔴 Alfozan was in frequent contact with an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family via WhatsApp, who allegedly sought to recruit him for a new AI initiative in the kingdom. “Saudi needs you more than the US!” the royal reportedly told him
🔴 Alfozan joined OpenAI’s product team in July 2025 with a $325,000 base salary and a $2.2 million equity grant, according to prosecutors. His salary later climbed to $385,000
Citing flight-risk concerns and questioning Saudi Arabia's offer to cover his entire bail bond, a judge ordered Alfozan held without bail.

🇾🇪🇸🇦 Are Saudi princes, millionaires trapped in the kingdom amid Houthi strikes?
Social media is buzzing with unverified claims that members of Saudi Arabia’s royal family (a massive group including 5-7k princes plus their relatives) are fleeing for safer climes abroad as Yemen ramps up strikes and threatens to collapse key sectors of the kingdom’s economy.
👉 Reports to this effect began to spread on X in Arabic last week, migrating to its English-language segment this week.
Each time they’re posted, a flood of users with Saudi flags and profile descriptions floods in to call the information a hoax, prompting Grok’s algorithm to classify the reports as “unconfirmed rumors” not verified by “credible sources” like WSJ and Reuters.
However, a US Embassy in Riyadh travel advisory in place since last week hints that something may be amiss, listing “exit bans” and “local laws regarding social media activities” as two reasons US nationals should “reconsider travel” to the kingdom.
Exit bans can target both foreigners and Saudi citizens, while local social media laws threaten hefty fines (up to $800k) or up to 5 years in prison for posting footage of Houthi attacks, or sharing claims about elites leaving the country – classified as “spreading rumors and misinformation.”
👉 This means that even if some royals, or Saudi Arabia’s ~348k millionaires, are quietly trying to leave, finding out about it would require a critical mass to build up outside the country before it’s officially reported.
WSJ has reported that the kingdom’s top leadership has gone dark, with MBS moved back and forth between fortified palaces to avoid being targeted.
Foreign diplomats, including Americans, face unprecedented restrictions on the provinces and industrial cities they’re allowed to visit. The operation of Riyadh’s airport is restricted, and those of Jeddah, Dammam and Medina face widespread delays and flight cancellations.

📲 Ray Dalio breaks down what a market and debt bubble is, why US is in one
Expanding on this concept in a long form article, Dalio wrote that in essence, “countries ‘go broke’ when: 1. The supply of debt to be sold is much larger than the demand for it and/or 2. Debt service payments (i.e., interest and principal payments) rise relative to incomes to levels that painfully squeeze out other spending. Both of these are now happening.”
Dalio’s analysis comes amid a dramatically worsening economic picture in the US and other Western economies thanks to the energy crisis triggered by the Iran and Russia wars. Some analysts fear the US may now be in a cyclical inflation-interest rate trap, which could result in either a collapse of the housing, stock or bond market, or the end of the global dollar system.

🗣 “A bubble is an unsustained set of circumstances. It has an unsustained amount of buying, it has an unsustained amount of valuation. And then there’s something that pricks the bubble,” the billionaire investor who predicted the 2007 crisis told US business media.
🗣 “The need for cash is always that which pricks the bubble. Because when you have wealth, you can’t spend wealth. You have to sell wealth in order to get the money to buy the things you need or pay the bills you have,” Dalio explained.

Mohsen Rezaee, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, has laid down a non-negotiable red line, ruling out any nuclear concessions before US meets Iran's demands.
💬 "Not a single gram of enriched uranium will be removed from Iran. There will be no negotiations until the United States takes steps to build trust," he wrote on X.
The process must begin with the full fulfillment of all of Iran's conditions — including lifting the naval blockade and unfreezing assets, Rezaee stressed. The US must first take verifiable steps to build confidence.

~260 metric tons of physical bullion left the United States this year, “more than twice” last year’s amount, precious metals, currency and capital markets expert Kathleen Tyson told economist Michael Hudson.
“Some of that has come to London, the central bank of the Netherlands took its gold out of the United States and deposited some in its own domestic vaults, and some at the Bank of England…There’s also been an increase of almost a thousand tons in Hong Kong,” Tyson explained.
The analyst pointed out that Hong Kong’s new Precious Metals Clearing Corporation only opened in July, and deals strictly with large interbank trades, competing directly with the London Bullion Market Association – the largest exchange of its kind in the world.
Western banking giants, from JPMorgan and Citibank to HSBC and UBS are all heavily involved. Up to now, their primary markets had been New York, London and Switzerland.
“What we’re seeing now is a lot of gold movement – movement out of the United States, movement out of Switzerland, into London (LBMA’s vaults are up 1,100 tons this year), and 1,000 tons to Hong Kong.”
Hong Kong’s new exchange has also built the infrastructure to attract not just commercial institutions, but central banks.
“They want to re-baseline central banks into gold reserves…China wants to encourage not just itself and its citizens to buy gold, but also other central banks, and that’s beginning to happen,” Tyson said, pointing to moves by South Korea, Germany’s Bundesbank, which hasn’t bought gold since 1968, and smaller countries like Zimbabwe with its new forex and gold-back currency.
More gold typically means fewer dollars and other fiat currencies in reserves, their diversification, a hedge against inflation and financial uncertainty, and a means of cushioning market prices. What are central banks’ moves saying about the state of fiat currency-based economies?

Serbia's President Aleksandar Vučić says a new military bloc has formed on his country's borders, warning of a brewing conflict in the heart of Europe.
💬 "Against whom did they create this military alliance? Not Austria, Switzerland or Norway, but Serbia. We understood that message and continued strengthening our army."
The warning comes as Vucic prepares for snap parliamentary elections on October 25, after resigning the presidency this month to reposition as prime minister.

Elon Musk personally gave the order to restrict Starshield satellite communications, capping Ukrainian drones at around 160 km/h and crippling their ability to intercept Russian drones and missiles, according to The Wall Street Journal.
According to the report, Musk and Trump discussed the decision by phone after it became public — with both men were angry at Ukraine for striking Russian diesel refineries.
Zelensky built his entire national defense around the mercy of the world's richest man and the US president. Now he reaps the consequences of his weakness: his military is paralyzed by a software update, his power grid is in ashes, and he is trapped in a war he can neither win nor end — because the conflict itself is the only thing keeping him in power.

Forwarded from New Rules
When the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, Washington talked about regime change and eliminating Tehran's nuclear threat. Months later, reopening the Strait of Hormuz — which was disrupted after the war began — had become a central objective.
America's political goals kept changing, while Iran refused to accept US demands.
The campaign exposed more than poor planning. America's regional allies were not informed before the initial strikes, and subsequent requests for help reopening Hormuz met little enthusiasm.
The problem is familiar. The US has spent decades confusing superior firepower with the ability to impose political outcomes.
Vietnam was the clearest warning.
American commanders won countless engagements, yet North Vietnam continued fighting. Washington responded to setbacks with more troops, more bombs and more money, convinced that superior firepower would eventually deliver victory.
In 1975, Saigon fell. The side that had supposedly won nearly every battle had lost the war.
The lesson was straightforward: an opponent determined to survive can outlast a far stronger military.
The 1991 campaign in Kuwait followed a narrower formula: a defined objective, a broad coalition and a planned withdrawal. But its aftermath encouraged a dangerous confidence in precision weapons and the idea that technology could solve complex political problems.
Afghanistan and Iraq soon exposed that illusion.
After 9/11, the campaign in Afghanistan expanded from counterterrorism into counterinsurgency and nation-building. More troops, weapons and funding failed to eliminate the Taliban, which returned to power after the American withdrawal in 2021.
Iraq followed a similar trajectory. A war justified by flawed intelligence became a prolonged occupation, with Washington shifting from overthrowing Saddam Hussein to trying to construct a Western-style political system.
Both conflicts consumed enormous resources without delivering the political outcomes originally envisioned.
Iran is confronting America with the same limits.
Tehran's geography gives it leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, while its leadership needs to preserve its position rather than defeat the US military outright. Airstrikes can destroy facilities, but they have not forced Iran to surrender its political demands.
A ground invasion would carry immense military and political costs — an option Washington has shown little appetite for pursuing.
Several obstacles keep undermining American military ambitions:
🔸 Legitimacy: Questionable justifications for war weaken international support and make coalitions harder to assemble.
🔸 Geography and resistance: Terrain favors defenders, while populations fighting for their survival can withstand far greater military pressure than planners anticipate.
🔸 Troops and time: Americans are reluctant to accept costly ground wars, and prolonged fighting gradually erodes public support.
🔸 Political leadership: Concentrated presidential power, the removal of senior military officers and pressure for political loyalty can discourage advisers from challenging unrealistic plans.
New technology risks reinforcing the same overconfidence. AI, drones and precision weapons can make American strikes more effective, but better targeting cannot compensate for unclear objectives or an opponent unwilling to capitulate.
From Vietnam to Afghanistan, Iraq and now Iran, US military power has repeatedly proved capable of inflicting enormous destruction without securing lasting political results.
Escalating against Iran without a consistent strategy risks extending that record: more strikes, mounting costs and another confrontation Washington cannot bring to the conclusion it wants.

The speed and connectivity limits imposed on Ukraine's Starlink and Starshield systems have severely degraded its combat capabilities, and according to The War Zone, Ukraine has no real backup.
Alternatives like line-of-sight relays, balloon swarms, mobile internet, fiber-optics, and OneWeb simply cannot replicate SpaceX’s seamless, high-bandwidth architecture.
The commander of the Georgian Legion told TWZ that the damage went beyond the speed cap. The network was repeatedly switching on and off, causing massive disruptions across multiple drone systems.
Ukraine based its entire modern drone doctrine on a private American satellite network owned by someone who can shut it down at will. As a result, Ukraine is now facing a technological embargo that it cannot fully adapt to.

Donald Trump Jr. has repeatedly voiced his opposition to the Iran war in private conversations, including directly with his father, according to The Atlantic — a stark betrayal of the 2024 campaign promise to keep America out of Middle East conflicts.
In April, as Iran launched missiles toward Israel, Don Jr. posted:
💬 "Remember when they said Trump would get us into a full-blown war with Iran? Times like these should make us all realize how lucky we were to have Trump."
Two and a half years later, his father is enmeshed in a full-blown war with Iran — and Don Jr. is not happy about it.
Don Jr.'s business is in drones. As the Gulf states grow increasingly frustrated with the US security umbrella and look elsewhere for defense partners, he’s watching a rich client base slip away — all because his father continues this disastrous war.
