๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ South Korea-US alliance frays at the edges amid trust issues

Intelligence restrictions, scaled-back military drills and disputes over investments are increasingly straining US-South Korea ties, reports Bloomberg.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Tensions over intel cooperation date back to March, when Seoulโ€™s unification minister publicly identified Kusong as the site of a North Korean uranium-enrichment facility.

The US reportedly viewed the disclosure as a breach of classified US intelligence and subsequently restricted some satellite-derived information on North Koreaโ€™s nuclear facilities.

South Koreaโ€™s President Lee Jae Myung rejected the allegations as โ€œabsurd.โ€
South Korean officials insist that intelligence sharing on missiles, conventional forces and immediate military threats remains intact.

Other key flashpoints:

๐Ÿ”ด South Korean lawmaker Jung Chung-rae was forced to switch his planned US trip this month after his visa remained under review by the State Department and was not issued in time for a parliamentary audit of South Korean missions in the Americas.

๐Ÿ”ด Donald Trump ordered a scaling back of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint exercises in August from 11 days to five, with some live-fire and field training reduced or canceled. Trump cited costs, South Koreaโ€™s refusal to support US efforts against Iran, and claimed the drills sent an โ€œinappropriate and hostileโ€ signal to North Korea.

๐Ÿ”ด Investment disputes: Disagreements persist over a $350 billion investment framework, including projects involving Alaska LNG and nuclear reactors. South Korea has insisted on commercial viability and domestic legal requirements, with some projects remaining under review.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Saudi Arabia scrambles for new trade lifeline to dodge Hormuz and Red Sea risks

Struggling to fend off mounting risks to its maritime trade and energy infrastructure, Saudi Arabia is exploring expanding a new freight corridor, reports The Cradle.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Port of NEOM and logistics partner CEVA Almajdouie have signed an MoU to study a combined sea-and-land freight corridor from Europe via Egypt and Saudi Arabia to Gulf Cooperation Council states and Iraq.

With shipping in the Strait of Hormuz disrupted, and Saudi Arabiaโ€™s Red Sea export terminals and Eastโ€“West Pipeline pumping stations vulnerable to Ansar Allah strikes, the new route would link NEOMโ€™s Red Sea port directly with CEVA Almajdouieโ€™s land transport network.

โ™ฆ๏ธ cargo could be moved inland across Saudi Arabia and neighboring markets

โ™ฆ๏ธ maritime gateways would link up directly to high-capacity inland networks - essential for supply-chain resilience

โ™ฆ๏ธ for Iraq, the corridor would offer an alternative path for European and other imports, reducing dependence on conventional Persian Gulf routes

The project remains at an early exploratory stage, with no details yet released on costs, timelines or expected cargo volumes.

๐Ÿช–Hezbollah sends spy drones into south Lebanon as Israel prepares for a new war

Hezbollah allegedly has been sending intelligence-gathering drones into Israeli-occupied parts of south Lebanon, Hebrew media revealed amid reports the resistance movement is preparing for a new Israeli campaign.

Israel's Air Force fired interceptors at suspicious targets in at least five incidents over the past two weeks. In three cases, the objects were confirmed to be Hezbollah devices but Israel only managed to bring down one. A "suspicious" balloon also entered Israeli airspace days ago, with the IDF unable to determine its origin.

Qatari-funded outlet Al-Modon says Hezbollah is preparing for war, given that any US-Israeli attack on Iran would also include strikes on Lebanon. Sources say FPV drones โ€” which inflicted serious losses on Israeli forces during the war โ€” are being upgraded to carry 4โ€“6 kg of explosives.

This week, the Lebanese army seized a truck carrying explosives for alleged FPV drone construction. "The vehicle belongs to the resistance, and the materials are intended to confront the occupation," said Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah.

๐Ÿช–๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Israeli spyware weaponized online ads to hunt targets worldwide

Israeli-linked spyware operators exploited the digital advertising industry to track and potentially infect devices without users clicking a single link, revealed Canadian watchdog Citizen Lab.

Israeli company Discover-Tech, posing as a legitimate ad business, used targeted advertising as a covert pipeline for mercenary spyware operators like Candiru (now known as Integrity Labs), steering millions of devices toward its servers for tracking and reconnaissance, the report found.

๐Ÿ”ด Discover-Tech operates Controlium, a platform that can identify devices, collect technical fingerprints and trigger infection attempts simply when an ad is displayed - no click required

๐Ÿ”ด over four months, its advertisements appeared on nearly 200,000 unique websites and Android and iOS apps across dozens of countries

๐Ÿ”ด the company served at least 10 million ads daily, per separate report by advertising security firm Confiant

๐Ÿ”ด ads appeared across sensitive networks linked to the Pentagon, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Criminal Court, NATO, UN, European Parliament, European Commission and national governments

๐Ÿ”ด Discover-Tech was listed as an approved vendor by Google and IAB Europe and placed ads through major advertising networks; researchers also linked it to Israeli spyware operators Intelos and Bindecy

Candiru was blacklisted by the US in 2021 over national security concerns, alongside Israeli spyware firm NSO Group (behind the notorious Pegasus software.

๐Ÿš€ Iranโ€™s retaliatory strikes shattered Gulf infrastructure - but Arab states downplayed damage

Despite official claims that damage came only from falling debris, Iranโ€™s missiles and drones repeatedly disabled critical pieces of equipment, according to a Reuters analysis.

Iranโ€™s retaliatory strikes, along with those of Iran-aligned forces, inflicted damage across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Iraq, according to strike footage, satellite imagery, official data, and interviewed sources.

Key results of strikes include:

๐ŸŒ Fujairah port (UAE): Hit at least 19 times, with destroyed oil-routing matrix manifolds and tanks that crippled loadings for weeks

๐ŸŒ Qatarโ€™s Ras Laffan LNG plant: Struck two โ€œcold boxesโ€ that liquefy gas; repairs estimated at 3โ€“5 years

๐ŸŒ Emirates Global Aluminium Al Taweelah smelter: Power plant and a full smelting line hit in one day, shutting all 1,262 cells (full production not expected before 2027)

๐ŸŒ Saudi oil system: Five of nine biggest refineries damaged; East-West Pipeline pumping stations hit

๐ŸŒ other notable targets: airports struck in Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia; multiple power and desalination plants; UAEโ€™s Barakah nuclear power plant, where an electrical substation was hit, forcing one of its four reactors onto emergency diesel generators; various gas complexes, refineries and industrial sites

Gulf governments often downplayed the toll and restricted imagery, yet high-value hits left facilities facing billions in repairs and prolonged outages.

๐Ÿ“ Israelโ€™s ruling parties target Arab polling stations as Palestinian votes could decide who rules next

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahuโ€™s Likud and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrichโ€™s Religious Zionism parties plan to station nearly 2,000 activists as observers at polls in Arab areas in the Oct.27 Knesset elections, according to The Times of Israel.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The deployment is ostensibly needed to flag irregularities in voting and counting - despite Israelโ€™s Central Elections Committee maintaining that electoral fraud, if it occurs, is marginal.

Critics speculate the move is designed to intimidate Palestinians with Israeli citizenship. Likud fears a strong turnout among Palestinians could tip the election against Netanyahu. The party has already failed in its bid to disqualify the two main Palestinian-led lists, Raโ€™am and the Joint List, which polls project may win around 14 seats combined.

Since neither Netanyahuโ€™s coalition nor the main Jewish opposition parties are expected to secure the 61 seats needed for a majority on their own, that makes Arab turnout a potential game-changer.

๐Ÿ”ถ Raโ€™am helped tip the balance toward an anti-Netanyahu government in the 2021โ€“22 coalition

๐Ÿ”ถ Likud placed cameras in Arab communities in 2019 in a move widely seen as an attempt to deter voters

๐Ÿ”ถ Netanyahu rallied his base in 2015 by warning that Arab voters were โ€œheading to the polls in drovesโ€

๐Ÿ”ถ opposition figures, including Naftali Bennett, have since pledged to form a Zionist unity government without relying on Palestinian parties

๐Ÿคฅ๐Ÿ’ฐTrumpโ€™s ballroom bonanza: Secret donors & lucrative government deals

The total of $333M has already been pledged toward Donald Trumpโ€™s planned White House ballroom, with at least $77 million coming from donors seeking anonymity, reported The Washington Post.

An internal spreadsheet includes 67 donations above $10,000 recorded as of late September.

While ordinary political giving follows campaign-finance law, this money flows through a nonprofit to the government - and into a White House account the president controls.

โ™ฆ๏ธ $166.1M came from the tech industry, with Nvidia and Apple each committing $25M

โ™ฆ๏ธ Nvidia reportedly requested its donation - made after it reached a deal with the Trump administration to sell its microchips to China - be kept anonymous

โ™ฆ๏ธ US-Israeli citizen and Trump megadonor Miriam Adelson also pledged $25M

โ™ฆ๏ธ Lockheed Martin, Microsoft and Palantir each gave $10M; Amazon, Comcast, Caterpillar are also among major donors

โ™ฆ๏ธ crypto firms operating amid Trump-relaxed regulation, pledged over $18M

Some donations followed government decisions affecting donorsโ€™ businesses.

๐Ÿ”ด an affiliate of Rocket mortgage lender pledged $10M after the federal approval of housing acquisitions

๐Ÿ”ด Salesforce committed money after securing a hefty army contract

๐Ÿ”ด tech billionaire and EchoStar cofounder Charles Ergen pledged $25M after regulators dropped a probe into his company

๐Ÿ”ด Isabela Herrera pledged $2.5M after her father Julio Herrera Velutini, a Venezuelan-Italian banker indicted for bribery, secured a plea deal

The fundraising has yet to meet Trumpโ€™s $400M target.

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Russiaโ€™s Geran-5 drone closes in on record 800 km/h - nears cruise missile speed

Russiaโ€™s jet-powered Geran-5 attack drones used in recent strikes on Ukraineโ€™s military-linked targets has reached speeds nearing 800 km/h, according to air-monitoring data circulating online.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Previous estimates put the speed maximum at around 600 km/h.

Russia has either upgraded existing models or fielded a new variant still listed under the Geran-5 designation, analysts speculate.

๐Ÿ”ถ speed increase means less time to detect drone threat, pass targeting data, and launch interceptors

๐Ÿ”ถ countering made especially difficult for mobile fire teams & units optimized against slower UAVs

๐Ÿ”ถ at roughly 800 km/h, the drone approaches the performance of some subsonic air-launched cruise missiles like Russiaโ€™s Kh-101

๐Ÿ”ถ it retains lower cost and mass-production potential of an unmanned system

Russia has progressively upgraded the Geran family with improved navigation, electronic warfare resistance and greater performance.

The Geran-5 model:

๐Ÿ”ด uses a turbojet engine, unlike earlier piston-engine models

๐Ÿ”ด can carry a warhead weighing up to 90 kg

๐Ÿ”ด has an estimated operational range of ~1,000 km

๐Ÿ”ด at ~ 6 meters long, it uses cruise missile-style configuration rather than flying-wing design

โœก๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Illegal Israeli settlers torch trees & attack Palestinian olive pickers under army cover - report

Around 80 illegal settlers dressed in black descended on a terraced olive grove near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah in the West Bank, where villagers had gathered for the annual olive harvest, according to Reuters.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Some carried gas canisters, while others used slings to hurl stones at Palestinians, who retreated down the hillside before throwing stones back.

The violence continued after Israeli military jeeps arrived at the scene, with soldiers firing tear gas toward Palestinians, while the sound of live gunfire was heard in the area.

Olive trees were set ablaze, and at least two people, including The Washington Post journalist Heidi Levine, were injured in the violence.

The assault was part of a broader wave of settler violence targeting Palestinians during the olive harvest - a vital source of income and a deeply rooted tradition.

๐Ÿšข Oil tanker violating restrictions catches fire in Sea of Oman โ€” Iran's Navy

Iranian naval surveillance teams patrolling the east of the Strait of Hormuz have detected a burning vessel, according to a statement by the Army Navy's public relations office cited by Mehr.

The tanker reportedly caught fire in a restricted zone in the Sea of Oman after switching off its tracking systems while attempting to transit the area.

โ™ฆ๏ธ vesselโ€™s name, flag and crew status are unknown

โ™ฆ๏ธ cause of the fire has not been determined

โ™ฆ๏ธ no information has been released on responsibility

Iranโ€™s navy stressed that unauthorized movements in prohibited routes create insecurity and pose risks to other shipping.

The incident follows recent fires and sinkings in the same waters, including the container ship GFS Pride.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ“‘ Outcome of US midterms wonโ€™t stop war drive against Iran โ€“ report

Even in the case of a Democratic takeover of Congress in the 2026 midterms, the bipartisan consensus that drives US policy in West Asia - especially the war with Iran - is likely to remain in place, reports The Cradle.

Democrats are likely to win the House and have a realistic shot at the Senate (Cook Political Report, Decision Desk HQ's forecast), potentially elevating Hakeem Jeffries to Speaker.
Yet this shift offers little hope of reversing the war that Jeffries has criticized as โ€œOperation Epic Failure.โ€

Major hurdles in the way:

โ™ฆ๏ธ even if Democrats pass war-powers resolutions to end hostilities not sanctioned by Congress, President Donald Trump can veto them

โ™ฆ๏ธ overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds majority, which Democrats would lack

โ™ฆ๏ธ Trump already demonstrated this shield in his first term, successfully vetoing Yemen war-powers resolutions and arms-sale restrictions to Saudi Arabia/UAE; Republican dissenters were too few to override

โ™ฆ๏ธ bipartisan hawks (Senators Fetterman, Rosen, Coons; several House Democrats) championing confrontation support for Israel remain influential

The gavel may change hands, the publication speculates, but Congressโ€™s hyper-interventionist agenda wonโ€™t.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท Iran prepares to repel new US attacks

Iranian forces were able to repair much of their military gear damaged by previous US attacks and to obtain new equipment, thus bolstering their air defense capability, Iranโ€™s Army spokesman Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia told Iranian media.

Akraminia further declared that Iran currently possesses a level of defensive capability greater than that before the US-Israel aggression started.

His remarks come amid speculation that the US may deploy the โ€˜Mother of All Bombs' ordnance against Iran, with Bloomberg arguing that it underlines Iranian officials belief that the US will resume its currently-paused bombing campaign.

Akraminia also suggested that US warships that moved over 500 km from the Iranian coast will be forced to โ€œretreat further and move away from the regionโ€ once Iran implements its โ€œoperational plansโ€ that are currently underway.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ South Korea mulls aiding US naval effort near Strait of Hormuz โ€“ report

The South Korean government is reportedly considering expanding its ongoing anti-piracy effort to the Gulf of Oman, right next to the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, South Korean newspaper Kyunghyang Shinmun claims.

The so-called Cheonghae Unit was originally deployed off Somaliaโ€™s coast in 2009 and consists of one destroyer and one helicopter, with the unitโ€™s declared goal being to escort ships passing through the Gulf of Aden and conduct anti-piracy operations.

If the new mission is approved, the unit could be bolstered by the addition of a maritime patrol aircraft.

The proposal has already met resistance from South Korean political opposition and civil society, the newspaper notes, as such expansion of the Cheonghae Unitโ€™s mission may be regarded by Iran as South Korea entering the war on the US side.
