๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Chile-Argentina tensions resurface as US-China rivalry puts focus on Strait of Magallanes

The southern cone of South America is reemerging as a zone of strategic friction, where a decades-old rivalry between Chile and Argentina is intersecting with competition between the US and China over the region's geography, resources, and infrastructure, Zona Defensa reports.

Argentina is rebuilding military capabilities that laid dormant for decades, with the US increasingly visible as a facilitator of that process. Chile, meanwhile, is modernizing its own forces and reinforcing its presence around the Strait of Magallanes.

The two neighbors resolved their territorial disputes decades ago, most notably through the 1984 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which reaffirmed Chilean sovereignty over the Strait of Magallanes and established the maritime boundary in the Beagle Channel. Yet the strategic logic of the far south has not disappeared. The strait remains a critical interoceanic passage, a gateway to Antarctica, and a point of convergence for commercial and military navigation. Recent remarks by Argentine officials describing their country as "bi-oceanic" and referencing the strait have revived sensitivities in Chile.

Analysts outline four scenarios for a possible crisis, each with distinct implications:

1๏ธโƒฃ A limited incident in the far south โ€” a territorial, maritime, or aerial dispute that escalates gradually through mobilizations and shows of force, testing both sides' ability to control escalation before localized friction draws in larger strategic stakes.

2๏ธโƒฃ The Strait of Magallanes as a pressure point โ€” a contest not over territorial conquest but over control of access, protection of critical infrastructure, and the ability to deny operational advantages, with Chile's geographic position offset by the challenge of sustaining operations far from its industrial centers.

3๏ธโƒฃ A deep air war โ€” a conventional conflict in which air superiority becomes decisive, with Chile's operational maturity and F-16 experience initially offsetting Argentina's growing but still-developing capabilities, while Argentina's territorial depth allows the dispersal of aircraft across interior airfields.

4๏ธโƒฃ A war of attrition in Patagonia โ€” a ground conflict shaped by vast distances, low population density, and harsh weather, where logistics matter as much as combat power, and where Argentina's continental continuity competes against Chile's reliance on sea and air transport to sustain forces in the far south.

What gives this renewed tension its broader significance is the intensifying competition between the US and China for influence across Latin America.

๐ŸŸฅ China has deepened its economic footprint across the region over two decades, becoming a major trade partner for Brazil, Chile, Peru, and others

๐ŸŸฅ A large Chinese-flagged fishing fleet operating near Argentina's exclusive economic zone has drawn US scrutiny, with former officials suggesting possible intelligence gathering, though a Reuters review found no evidence of mass seabed mapping

The US fears that China could consolidate access to dual-use infrastructure, telecommunications networks, and sensitive technology across the hemisphere, challenging long-standing US dominance.

The Trump administration has responded with initiatives like the "Shield of the Americas," a security cooperation framework that several right-leaning Latin American governments have joined, while Chile's own alignment with the US has sparked domestic debate about sovereignty and strategic autonomy.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Saudis may try to rope US into disastrous Yemen war โ€“ CIA veteran

Having suffered great damage to their oil production and export capabilities โ€“ their main source of revenue โ€“ the Saudis may try to liquidate their savings currently stored in the form of US treasuries, former CIA analyst Larry Johnson said on East Meets West podcast.

๐Ÿ”Š โ€œThe Saudis said โ€˜either you help us, you intervene, or weโ€™re gonna start selling all your treasury bills.โ€™ Thatโ€™s gonna potentially compel the United States to say โ€˜Okay, we gotta go along, we gotta help themโ€™,โ€ he speculated.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ“‰ Brazil's debt crisis hides behind pro-Trump candidate euphoria

The strong early showing of Flavio Bolsonaro in Brazil's presidential race has unleashed a wave of investor optimism so intense that markets are at risk of overlooking a debt problem touching every corner of the economy, according to Bloomberg.

๐ŸŒ An unprecedented 9.3 million companies document unpaid debt, with overdue debts reaching $48 billion

๐ŸŒ Agricultural delinquencies reached their highest level in 15 years following low grain margins and climate disasters

๐ŸŒ As a result, Brazil's general non-performing loans climbed to a record high of 5% in the country's financial system

Flavio Bolsonaro, Trump's strong bet in the Brazilian election, has seized on the credit issue, criticizing the incumbent's debt renegotiation program and running advertisements highlighting high-profile corporate defaults. His plan includes a rescue fund for indebted households and companies, financed by oil auction proceeds and asset sales. The state-owned Caixa Economica Federal would buy up the debts and refinance them at lower rates, with grace periods attached.

Similar initiatives have kept credit flowing and given borrowers short-term relief, but they have not stopped delinquency from climbing. Getting interest rates down is the key to escaping the debt trap, according to experts.

While both candidates have promised to stabilize the debt burden without sacrificing popular social spending, Bolsonaro has pledged to strengthen a low-income program and backed a law shortening the standard working week. Such measures imply more spending and more consumer demand, complicating the government's task of reducing debt and the central bank's job of cutting rates.

๐Ÿ‘‰ How the fiscal problem could hurt Brazil's economy

The debt overhang is already feeding into slower growth. Household consumption fell in the second quarter, and the broader economy is losing momentum as high borrowing costs and record delinquency squeeze both families and businesses. Public debt above 80% of GDP forces the government to spend heavily just servicing interest, leaving less room to invest or respond to shocks.

If investors lose confidence in the next administration's willingness to adjust the budget, the Brazilian real could weaken and borrowing costs could climb further, making the debt even harder to refinance. In the worst case, Brazil risks getting stuck in a cycle where high rates suppress activity, weak activity worsens the fiscal picture, and the fiscal picture keeps rates high.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿช–US drafts plans for war with China in the Pacific

The new US Army guidance document released in October outlines preparations along a string of archipelagos in the Pacific known as the โ€˜first island chainโ€™, which includes the Japanese archipelago, northern Philippines and Taiwan.

The operational warfighting guidance advises Washington to beef up US military infrastructure in the area โ€“ such as command and control facilities, logistics and munition stockpiles โ€“ to ensure that US forces could operate from the get-go if a conflict breaks out.

โ€œThe pacing threatโ€™s rapid deployment capabilities require land power options that do not rely on traditional, lengthy deployment timelines,โ€ the document says.

The US military also intends to bolster its electronic warfare, air defenses and long-range weaponry in the region to counter Chinaโ€™s own long-range missiles and surveillance systems.

Furthermore, the plan mentions โ€œexpanding protected fuel and munitions storage, improving distribution networks, and forward-deploying engineering, medical, and air defense assetsโ€ in the โ€˜second island chainโ€™ โ€“ which includes Guam, home of a key US military base in the region โ€“ to โ€œsustain distributed joint operations.โ€

๐Ÿ—ฃ Trump says Zelensky targets refineries to keep the war going โ€” 'he probably never wanted peace'

President Trump has lashed out at Volodymyr Zelensky on Truth Social, blaming him for the global diesel crisis and accusing him of prolonging the war to keep Western cash flowing.

"With all of the money that Europe is famously giving him, and that Crooked Joe Biden gave him in the past, he doesnโ€™t want to end this war, and probably never did. He could have made a better deal two years ago than he can now," he wrote.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Araghchi warns US and Israel: 'We have unfinished jobs too'

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a direct, double-edged threat on X, warning the US against another war while calling out Benjamin Netanyahu's motives.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "Last time you wanted to 'finish the job', Iran emerged even stronger. Want to try your luck again? Be our guest. But be careful; we have unfinished jobs too."

But Araghchi didn't just target the US military. He went straight for Netanyahu's legal and political vulnerabilities:

"Netanyahu is driving America into another war to stay out of jail, whatever the consequences for Israelโ€”let alone POTUS."

Iran survived the last 8 months of bombing, rebuilt its arsenal, and is ready for the next round. If the US goes in again to save Netanyahu, it will not be the quick victory Trump is being promised.

๐Ÿ›ข๐Ÿ—ฃ Oil futures disconnected from real prices โ€“ analyst

Oil futures prices do not represent the real cost of fuel โ€œon the groundโ€ across Asia and other regions, financial analyst Doug Casey says.

๐Ÿ”Š "I am asking myself, and I'm trying to think, who can I call that will have a ready and accurate answer as to why the futures markets are not pricing in the actual reality of what oil is trading at today?" he notes.

๐Ÿ”ŠThe same trends are happening across other markets, such as the silver market, Casey adds.
