I wrote this tweet from a Chromebook that has Twitter for Android streamed to it from a Pixel 6 Pro running Android 13!

Manually enabled the new "app streaming" feature. There was a bug preventing it from working on Android 14 DP2, so I downgraded one of my Pixels to Android 13 and then got it to work 😁

The grid of icons in the "Recent apps" section is actually a shortcut to open an app drawer! That means you aren't only limited to picking from the 5 most recent apps to launch.

Audio is also streamed from your phone to your Chromebook, meaning you can watch videos (or maybe even play some games?) - surprisingly little latency, too!

You can *technically* launch multiple apps onto the virtual display if you have "force desktop mode" and "enable freeform windows" enabled in developer options, but it's not a good idea, obviously.

You can also launch apps directly onto the virtual display, with an app like Taskbar by Braden Farmer that uses the APIs to do so, or through the 'am' shell command (append --display <DISPLAY_ID>).

And thanks to the VirtualAudioDevice API in Android 13, the app streaming feature can inject audio from a remote source (in this case, the mic on my Chromebook) into an app running on the virtual display! This means your phone doesn't have to be next to you to send voice messages.

Google Play is introducing a new policy for deleting user data.

For apps that enable app account creation, developers will soon need to provide an option to initiate account and data deletion from within the app and online. Users will be able to request account and data deletion without having to reinstall an app.

According to the new policy, when a request to delete an account, you must also delete the data associated with that account. Developers have the option to provide a choice: users can choose to delete only some data (such as activity history, images, or videos) instead of completely deleting the account. Developers who need to retain certain data for legitimate reasons will need to clearly disclose those data retention practices.

The maximum deadline for developers (subject to an additional extension) is May 31, 2024.

Google is working on a Power-off finder feature for Android devices.

According to Kuba Wojciechowski (via 91Mobiles), the feature will be called Pixel power-off finder, at least on Google phones. A new Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) definition called "hardware.google.bluetooth.power_off_finder" appeared in the source code. According to the comments on the code, pre-computed Finder Network keys will be loaded onto the device's Bluetooth chip, which will remain on even when the phone is turned off. Similar functionality has been on the iPhone for some time.

Google has apparently shared the early Android 14 source code with OEMs who participate in the early access program.

However, the feature requires hardware support so that the Bluetooth chip remains active even when the phone is turned off. The Pixel 8 will probably get a this feature, but what will happen with the Pixel 6 and 7 remains questionable.

Google Phone app prepares Tablet layout.

As always, the tablet layout will use a two-panel view using a navigation rail. Here, though, Google is considering an option without tab labels. Notably, the incoming call page no longer relies on swipes up and down, but offers two separate buttons to Answer and Decline.

As you can see, this is still a very early option, as it does not take into account the paddings from the top search bar.

🇬🇧 Android will add an "archive" function that will free up the memory of the device without uninstalling applications Archiving will help free up ~60% of app storage temporarily by removing parts of the app rather than uninstalling it completely. They remain…
Google has announced the Automatic App Archiving feature.

Auto-archive allows you to automatically free up to 60% of the space occupied by rarely used applications, without deleting the applications themselves and the user's personal data from the device.

The icon of such an app will be marked with a down arrow in the cloud. When the user wants to start using the app again, they can simply tap to re-download it and pick up where they left off (as long as the app is still available on Google Play).

Automatic archiving is only available for apps whose developers use the App Bundle for publishing. There will be a switch in the Google Play Store settings to disable the feature.

The development of the feature was first reported a year ago.

The video cards in the YouTube on Android feed get rounded corners.

In the last major UI update to YouTube, the full-width video cards were left untouched. But now that will change, as we can see in the new server experiment.

The video cards are now indented on the sides and have rounded corners, which looks more harmonious with the rest of the YouTube interface and appearance on tablets and PCs.

Thanks for the screenshot, @Fenozipal
