"The Valley of Square Trees" in Panama has uniquely square-trunked trees, which are a species of the Malvaceae family called Quararibea asterolepis. They are naturally occurring.

These trees feature straight edges and distinct corners on their lower trunks and tree rings. Scientists from the University of Florida have attempted to grow saplings elsewhere, but the trees only retain this rare, right-angled shape in the specific volcanic soil of El Valle.

The German word Kummerspeck literally means "grief bacon," but it has nothing to do with bacon. It refers to the extra weight someone gains from emotional eating during times of stress, sadness, or heartbreak.

The moon orbits Earth from west to east. However, we see it rise in the east and set in the west because Earth rotates on its axis from west to east much faster than the moon orbits. This rapid planetary spin overrides the moon's slower orbital speed, creating the optical illusion that the moon is traveling backward across our daily sky.

The sandwich is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, an English nobleman from the 1700s. According to popular accounts, he asked for meat to be served between two slices of bread so he could continue working and playing cards without using utensils. Others began ordering "the same as Sandwich," and the name eventually became associated with the dish itself.

In Denmark, an old humorous tradition says that if you are still unmarried on your 25th birthday, your friends may surprise you by covering you in cinnamon. If you remain unmarried at 30, some groups jokingly switch to pepper instead. The custom is believed to have originated from traveling spice merchants, who often remained single because they spent much of their lives on the road.

In 1785, the Diamond Necklace Affair became one of the biggest scandals in French royal history. Although Queen Marie Antoinette had no involvement, she was falsely accused of secretly obtaining an extraordinarily expensive diamond necklace through deception. The scandal destroyed much of her public reputation, fueled anti-monarchy sentiment, and became one of the events that weakened trust in the French monarchy before the French Revolution.

The Millau Viaduct in southern France is the tallest bridge in the world. Opened on 16 December 2004, its highest structural point reaches 343 meters (1,125 feet)β€”taller than the Eiffel Tower. Designed by engineer Michel Virlogeux and architect Norman Foster, the bridge carries traffic over the Tarn Valley while minimizing its impact on the landscape. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of modern bridge engineering.

Mount Kailash, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, is one of the world's most sacred mountains. It is revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon, making it unique among holy sites. Instead of climbing the mountain, pilgrims perform a 52-kilometer (32-mile) circuit around it, believing the journey brings spiritual merit. Out of respect for its religious significance, climbing Mount Kailash is prohibited, and no one has officially reached its summit.

At the end of World War II, Nazi Germany is believed to have hidden vast amounts of gold, artwork, and other valuables as Allied forces advanced. One of the most famous legends is the Nazi Gold Train, said to have disappeared near WaΕ‚brzych, Poland. Despite numerous searches, excavations, and modern surveys, no train has ever been found. The Greenland shark can live for over 400 years, making it one of the oldest-living vertebrates on Earth. Some individuals alive today may have been born in the 1600s. These slow-growing sharks can reach over 5 metres long and are found more than 1,000 metres deep in Arctic and North Atlantic waters. Scientists estimate their age by studying carbon levels in their eye lenses.

Unit 731 was a secret biological and chemical warfare unit of the Imperial Japanese Army. It operated near Harbin in occupied China during World War II. The unit carried out lethal human experiments on prisoners, including deliberate infection with diseases such as plague, cholera, anthrax, and typhoid. It also tested biological weapons and other military weapons on human subjects. Many records were destroyed after Japan's surrender. Some members were prosecuted by the Soviet Union, while others received immunity from prosecution by the United States in exchange for research data. Historians estimate that tens of thousands of people died directly or indirectly because of Unit 731's activities.

Only about 30 locations worldwide feature singing dunes, primarily crescent-shaped barchans, found in deserts like the Gobi, Mojave, and Taklamakan. These dunes produce deep hums or musical notes when sand avalanches slide down their slopes. The sound happens as grains of sand rub together, creating vibrations amplified by the dune’s structure, much like a violin or cello. The sand must be dry, with grains that are uniform in size and spherical, allowing for optimal vibration transfer. Acting like a natural instrument, the dune resonates and amplifies the sound, which can be heard up to 10 km away. This unique phenomenon can last for minutes, depending on the dune. Not all dunes sing, as specific conditionsβ€”like dry sand and the right grain sizeβ€”are required for the sound.

The world’s largest known single flower is Rafflesia arnoldii. It can grow over 1 metre wide and weigh around 10 kilograms. This giant flower is a parasite with no leaves, stems, or roots of its own. It absorbs water and nutrients from a tropical vine called Tetrastigma and attracts flies with its rotting-meat smell because flies pollinate the flower.
